We have to bro. That's why the CBB are here.
The notion that Coates is introducing elements to Black Panther lore that are in any way some kind of positive enhancements is quickly countered by the diminishing returns in sales and stature of T'Challa.
Unfortunately, we're the ones who have to suffer through this.
At least until the next writer comes along to undo this mess.
Ta-Nehisi is just being negative just to be negative.
His agenda is to change Wakanda into having the same history as white Americans, and to impose on them the same rape culture as America.
Unbelievable.
With black people like him writing comics, who needs racist white people? He's a more tactful uncle ruckus.
I don't see Coates' portrayal of T'Challa as being one of a "half-hearted, mopey king." It just doesn't read that way to me.
I like that - especially in Season 1 - that he seemed actually caught off-foot by events, something that we rarely see with T'Challa. I don't think that diminished him in any way but instead it showed him in a crisis situation that he couldn't be on top of in a way that he typically would be and I found that intriguing. For a character that is a superior chess player, seldom capable of being surprised, it was interesting and exciting to see him have to work harder for a win.
And Wakanda might've had its share of complexities prior to Coates' run but certainly it wasn't as flawed or divided as Coates has shown it to be. I haven't read Priest's run since it originally came out so I'm sure there's elements I've forgotten but Coates seems to be taking it into new territory.
I think you could make the argument that T'Challa was mopey in the first season... but a dead sister and a failed marriage will do that to you. But I wouldn't see he's mopey now. She's got his sister back and the love of his life back. It's like a country music song played in reverse.
As far as Wakanda and it's flaws... I think the difference between Coates and previous writers is that with Coates we're simply seeing more of Wakanda outside of T'Challas perspective. Usually we see Wakanda through the eyes of it's king. We got a more street level perspective of Wakanda under the Midnight Angels, and that allowed us to see elements and address issues most other writers won't address on a regular basis. It's not unlike how New York is different in an Iron Man story than a Daredevil story. Same place technically, but you're getting the story from a very different character with a very different perspective.
I very much doubt Franklin was the only scientist T'Challa could have gotten to help him.
I think this was merely giving Thunderball a chance. Maybe just maybe he can be redeemed if he's given the opportunity. It's a risky move certainly, but not necessarily a stupid one provided that T'Challa is prepared in the event Franklin doesn't do the right thing (and from the sound of things T'Challa is but we'll see).
I actually like what they are doing with Thunderball. Not entirely sure I want to see him become a good guy, because I like the Wrecking Crew... but I've always thought there was something different about him from the ret of the Crew. And I definitely think there's a story you can tell with him. The fact that he's a brilliant scientist acting as a criminal hired muscle always seemed like such an odd contrast.

Everyone has their own interpretation. However, Coates own words has T'Challa saying that he did not want to be King, a statement that contradicts the previous 50 years of T'Challa's existence.
Coates own words has T'Challa too wrapped up with his failures to notice that his country is falling apart with treehouse rape camps spring up like Holiday Inns. Yet, T'Challa has always be in tune with Wakanda and Wakandan interests to the point that he was intrinsically involved with coming to the US to investigate the murder of a little girl that was tied to a Wakandan charity.
Coates T'Challa conflicts and contradicts everything that makes him the character that his fans enjoy. Again, no BP fan ever said he was perfect or infallible. I would highly encourage you to read Priests entire run to see how truly complex his character can be written.

Ta-Nehisi is trying to write an elseworld's story in which Black Panther isn't Black Panther, because the idea of Black Panther and Wakanda contradicts his views on black males and that an Afro-futuristic society could be anything more than a redux of white america.
Remember, the end goal here is to make Black Panther into someone's Spider-Man. Lmao. His lying ass.

Oh, I'm not saying there aren't smart villains. But this is a scientist who doesn't really use his intelligence and hangs out with a bunch of dumb thugs. You don't look at the Wrecking Crew and think scientist... I frankly only found out he was one after reading the Marvel Handbooks back in the day. It's an aspect of the character which is seldom developed or even mentioned... which is why I think it's kinda nice that we're seeing that here.
I'm not exactly sure I wanna see a face turn here... but I think the mere possibility is sort of interesting. Because this clearly is a man whose life could have and should have went a very different direction.
For all the crap that Coates' run gets, why do you think it is still critically reviewed well?
For the same reason Punisher gets average reviews even though it's a great show. Some don't like it because it doesn't address gun control. Craft a story around Hollywood popular topics and it doesn't matter what it is, it will get good reviews.
Similar to the new Mister Miracle comic. Issues 2-4 are excellent, but #1 was garbage yet it got a 10 because it delt with depression.
Haven't seen Punisher yet, so I can't comment. Bernthal is cool though.
How do explain Marvel flicks like IM3 and Age of Ultron getting rave reviews despite being bad then? I don't think it's as cut and dry as "make a movie about common topics." Baby Driver got crazy good reviews and it was a essentially a common story of a getaway driver trying to leave a life of crime which was done many times. It did have a "musical" gimmick that made it interesting in a sense (some great action and foreshadowing), but strip that away it was a story we've seen many times.

During his Avengers run, Bendis was arguably the most successful writer in the industry both critically and commercially. But posters on the CBR would line up in droves to bash him on the Avenger threads week after week.
I think things like this are just a much needed reminder that the views of people on internet boards aren't necessarily reflective of readership in general. It's why WWE Wrestler John Cena still has a job despite being one of the most polarizing wrestlers in the industry in the last decade. Internet saying he sucks doesn't necessarily reflect ones critical or commercial success.

Yup. World of Wakanda was trash but b/c it was a "ground breaking" LGBT black women-centric mini, it got 4.5/5 and 4.8/5 type reviews.
Basically, the emperor's new clothes syndrome. And then you hear feedback like "i like that Wakanda is no longer this idealized society"
lmao

I was just thinking that after I read the article. lol
I can only speak for myself. I don't like SM for the so called "Parker luck". I like the web swinging walcrawling adventure aspect of it. After reading Superior Spider-Man, I like Otto more than Parker. lol

Money.
Baby driver is a standard story with new wrapping. Without the soundtrack it probably would have been as good.

UGH, punk ass John Cena with his shitty moves. Part of the reason why I stopped watching wrestling lmao.
As to your other points, yeah, it makes sense. I just thought it was more prevalent that Coates' run was hated so to see it critically acclaimed takes me be surpirse. I keep forgetting this place is a small minority. I stopped reading it around...8 issues so I cannot speak to it's quality myself. Nor do I have the love or knowledge of T'challa (only read Priest's and some of Hudlin's run) as many here.

So being cash king at the box office equates to rave reviews? If that's the case, Transformers are masterpieces lol. Unless you are implying that good will is being bought?
