All of the above is probably why I laugh when some readers state that Hickman's take on T'Challa was inspired by Priest's.
Hickman's portrayal of T'Challa was anything but Priest inspired.
Roy Thomas/Maberry inspired for sure.
On Priest's run? Some have said that?! What the...
Whatever BP that was in Hickman's run, that was NOT Priest's BP. No way.
Concerning your idea, would Shuri be American or Wakandan?
Nonetheless, I think Shuri is fine as is. All that needs to be figured out is how involved into the story she should be. No need for a personality changed, imho.
If it came down to Ross vs QDJ making the cut...I can see Ross over QDJ making the cut due to his governmental association alone. For QDJ to make it, it would have to be a very specific script. Maybe for a sequel, perhaps.
The thing I like about Ross is that he's a BP character who can really be used anywhere in the MU instead of just BP movies. He can show tonight in Agents of SHIELD if they wanted. A government agent if pretty versatile a character in that regard.
Correct, its a big reason why I hope they keep her background more or less as is. The (good-hearted) sibling dynamic, that can appear as a rivalry in some cases, would be very fun to watch.
It adds more flavor to the story, Having her meshed into QDJ just doesn't fit Shuri's personality.

People Praising Hickman's BP and saying he is based off of Priest's version is an Insult to What Priest Built up. Hickman's version is like Mayberry's Panther. Hickman's Panther constantly downplays his skills while praising his enemies an telling them that they are his superior and he only won by luck... That NOT even close to what Priest did, or Hudlin for that matter.

LOL I thought QDJ would shake out a little better since everyone seems to hate Princess Shuri but I guess they both on fandom's **** list.

I'm honestly not sure either is actually popular. Though in the least people know who Shuri is.

I enjoy Hickman's work(FF, Secret Warriors, East of West) but his T'Challa just didn't do everything that I expected.

I'm a QDJ supporter. She just needs to be given a role in the BP hierarchy.

I definitely don't get a Priest vibe from Hickman's BP. David Liss on the other hand actually had that distinction with his run, one that was too short imo. Even Aaron got Priest's take in just 2 issues.

Really I think any version of the character would have ended up a mess in the situation Hickman pit the character in. It was a no - win situation where he basically lost everything.

It's not just the situation he and the Illuminati found themselves in but his characterization and the way he handled it. I understand that some things had to be done to make the story work but I think a lot of characters had to give up a lot on their characterization, not just T'Challa.

I'm a Shuri supporter, but I def don't mind QDJ being in the film or the Coates run. It's just a matter and how QDJ would fit in the plot.
Yeah, if anything that backdrop should allow his cast to remain the same with the occassional drop/add.
Who your ideal supporting cast....

Liss did a good job with what he had, Jason Aaron did a Hybrid Hudlin/Priest like Panther, in terms of Priest like prep and hudlin like Badassery, but less Tech. Did you read original sin?
Aaron nailed that Priest/Hudlin like Panther there as well.

True is was a no win situation, but in NA Every good thing Hickman had T'Challa do was either Preceded by, or followed by, some terrible blunder. He one punch knocked out Black swan and her henchman pretty handily, but prior to that let Wakanda's Future die, He beat Black Dwarf and followed that by saying he only one by sheer luck that they retreated and had they fought longer, he would of llost, he lied and hid what was going on in the illuminate from Wakanda and Shuri (this is a trait T'Challa has NEVER had, he was always honest if someone asked him something directly) Let Wakanda be destroyed because of his blunders, the Cabal Survived because he was being arrogant. Cried and was scolded like a child by his dad when he refused destroy that work that the Justice league was on (T'Challa would NEVER cry, he would of held firm and stoic to his decision) Had no cap on his emotions and screamed at Namor that he would kill him (he has complete control over his emotions even when M'Baku killed his future self, he mourned alone and if someone were to see him, he would put on his poker face again). you can show a no win situation without compromising how a character acts

Two strong Black females. We definitely can't afford to lose any more of those. And both possibly in the same book with Ramonda and the Doras? Last time we had that many Black females in one book was...Black Panther.
