Oh, this is rich. The Crew gets shuffled off in almost a Hickman-esque fashion, and we discover that Misty was asked to come "because I heard about you from Luke".
So much for T'Challa's "day ones". :)

Yeah I guess he was unaware of the fact that they worked together when T'Challa was in hells kitchen!

I don't remember Misty Knight in the Hells Kitchen arc.
That was Luke and Falcon (and Storm on issue and Spider-Man another issue).
Misty showed up in Priest's run one arc withall those other street level people.
Unless I am forgetting an issue (which is possible)
I'm not sure what you're taste are, but if you're looking for a minority led indie, I'd say perhaps give Black Monday Murders a try. It's a large cast but the reader identification character is a black detective who's investigating occult murders in the financial district. The writing is by Hickman and it's really dense, but you might find it interesting.
Goldie Vance is fun, but it's more a kid's/family book. Spunky tween solves little mysteries.
If you haven't read it yet, track down David Walker's Shaft comics. It's better than Nighthawk and way better than Cyborg.
"Hickman-esque" is NOT a compliment, my friend. :D
Right now, the only ongoing I'm subscribed to is Atomic Robo. Escapist adventure & fun is more important to me than the race (or indeed species) of the protagonist. :)

Read WoW. I'm going to have to join the minority on this topic. I liked the first story, but not the second.
The second was more of Coates's version of Wakanda shaming. The royal family does nothing for the people and outside of the palace Wakanda is Detroit. I've always invisioned Wakanda as a socialist monarchy with enough advanced tech that it was similar to living on earth during star trek. Minus replicators, but with enough knowledge that average citizens had their basic needs met.
The first while nothing ground breaking was well written and opened up new interesting characters. Would have liked to see Big Mama beating up recruits while holding a baby lol.

The problem I have with this is to me, the quality of the story depends on the quality of the story, not the message it's sending. I know people here don't like a Wakanda succumbing to adversity, but it just comes off as a much better-written story. Its biggest flaw is that it's a slow pace (which isn't necessarily a flaw depending on the details), it's got a lot of different moving story parts so no story gets a lot of attention (in particular, T'Challa), and the action scenes flat out suck.
To me, the pace in this story was way too fast. There was no time for subtlety or an exploration of characters. Everything was a box that needed to be checked so they could move to the next point. So it had to make sure the box was checked in the most obvious way possible. I just disagree with it being well-written. That being said, I do hope with more space, there's room for better writing. I think some of the characters have potential to explore something interesting and it'll be fun to see Shuri as Queen again.

Def agree with the bold. Rather interesting that Roxane Gay has the complete opposite problem that Coates has, pacing wise. Rather than moving too slowly, Gay's story is moving way too quickly. Not enough buildup of the characters or Wakanda. Too many things happening too quickly. I'm very curious on how a brand new reader who's not familiar with the BP mythos would feel about that.

I agree with this. I would've liked to see more about the culture of the Doras. But since these stories seem to be about the Coates book, if you're reading the main book, short stories will work. Will have to wait for more stories, but World of Wakanda may not be the proper title

I felt that the build up to their attraction happened way too quickly. It was basically a love/lust at first sight. And even the execution of this approach felt very rushed.
As is, their relationship in this book feels rather artificial at the moment. Perhaps it was by designed, but if so it wasn't well done, imho.

Yeah, the story had little weight or drama.
Positives though.
The Dora's were not demonized.
No concubine bull crap
Being gay wasn't a big deal. The controversy was more about a trainer falling for a new recruit.
It could have been a story of a heterosexual romance.

My problem with making the MA sympathetic is that it makes it even more unlikely that Coates will ever address the hypocrisy of their actions in the first few issues.
For those of you that remember, apparently the Treehouses™ are well enough known that two rank & file Dora knew about them, but they either didn't TELL their superiors, or their superiors KNEW and turned a blind eye. Neither is really a tenable proposition, unless you accept the premise that Wakandans are systematically misogynistic and (apparently) racist towards those poor, innocent Nigandans. :P

It's still possible (though not likely at this point, imho) that the flaws in the MAs actions will be discussed via their eventual encounter with Shuri in the next few issues.
The book has already addressed the contradictions of several actions--some well done, others could've been done better--throughout the story.
T'Challa's contradictions have been discussed already, due to his actions in previous stories.
Tetu's hypocrisy is very evident at this point, can't claim that you care about Wakanda and its people, yet you are willing to murder innocents (from your own nation, at that) at a grand scale just to achieve your goal. He's putting his own personal ambition over the welfare of his people and his country.
Even Changamire's contradictions were discussed in #4. Sure, he wants democracy, but does he understand the ramifications of doing so, and how it will truly affect Wakanda before and after its implementation? He's a big theory man, but when it comes to putting his theories to practice, it's a whole different matter. Wouldn't surprise me if that was one of the reasons Ramonda left him for T'Chaka. Flawed as he may be, T'Chaka makes things happen and makes things happen very often.
So the pattern is there. Will said pattern continue with the MAs? We'll find out soon.

Did we just become best friends? lol. Agree with all of this, especially the pacing issues of both stories.
IMO, Coates story could have been todl in more traditional arcs so each storyline doesn't seem forever dragged out. Pick either the MA or Tetu/Zenzi to be the "end game" of the story that simmers inthe back ground during the first 8 issues culminating int he last 4. Arc 1 (issues 1-4) could have been focused on the general rebellion, problems in wakanda as a whole and the MA/Chang's storyline, arc 2 (issues 5-8) could have been focused on Shuris journey, while Arc 3 has T'challa and Shuri finally coming to clash with Tetu/Zenzi and their forces.
Of course I am being very vague-ish for a ton of reasons, but it would have made each mini story feel complete before moving on to the next instead of getting 4 pages of Shuri one week and then waiting 3 months before you get some more.
But... pushing mini stories while also developing "the main threat" in the background can be quite challenging writing wise. Even people like Bendis have problems with that (Bendis teases the threat great and then it ends up a dud in the end ie: Dark Beast). So Coates may simply be too new to the process to try something like that. That is Prime Priest level TBH.
Also, teen dramas are one if my guilty pleasures.
While, the MA part of the story line must have been orgasmic then lol
I'm very curious on how a brand new reader who's not familiar with the BP mythos would feel about that.
I gave up on thinking what new readers might think after Coates success lol.
After seeing the writing praised in more than one review... I just... I just don't understand.
The cynic in me thinks either (a) people are afraid to criticizing non-comic writers who are great in their fields (b) people want a lesbian book to work so bad they are overlooking flaws (c) I am an idiot and should just stfu
Does Gay really have to build them up though. I can't imagine that there are many new readers who
She has to make them interesting though. Coates gave the people just a little (bad ass warrior lesbians who feel wronged by the current system) and it excited them. Gay's job is to stoke those flames into something lasting.
Her first issue, IMO, was like a kid who tries to take a small campfire and throws a bunch of damn wood on it and about smothers that **** out because hes in a hurry to have the BIGGEST FIRE EVER
I felt that the build up to their attraction happened way too quickly. It was basically a love/lust at first sight. And even the execution of this approach felt very rushed.

either Shuri si going ot deal with it or the rape treehouses won't be brought back up and they only existed to force sympathy onto the MA.

Re: Shuri...
I wonder if Shuri's comeback shouldn't have been handled in Season 2 when he is touching upon religion anyway.
That would have opened up pages and pages that could have been used to strengthen one of the other 10 storylines or show some more flat terrible action sequences.
You could still show hints of T'challa working ont he solution, but the issue #12 epilogue coudl have ended with the very scene we just saw in the preview with T'challa telling Eden "lets go get her"
Would have been a good hook leading into season 2 while allowing season 1 to breath a little.
But, either way, please please please be the Shuri Liss, Hickman, and Waid developed and not something... else

Honestly, I'm not sure. I think the complaints about T'Challa not being the hero are more or less complaints of tires spinning. Coates is trying to set up everything else - Shuri's spiritual journey, the Midnight Angels, and Tetu to get them to certain points when T'Challa confronts them. But he obviously can't write T'Challa out of the book and he knows he's supposed to have some action. So we're left with extremely unfulfilling action that ends up with T'Challa never really substantively gaining anything. Of the story threads, I think Shuri's has run its course. It's beginning to get repetitive. Now is a good time to show that T'Challa is moving towards the finish line - have him get Shuri back. Tetu finally began to become a full-fledged villain (as opposed to a half-villain), so I think he needs to do more stuff before T'Challa stops him. It's not time to do that. I have no idea what the Midnight Angels story is going to do going forward, but it doesn't feel it's reached its climax yet. That means leaves T'Challa with essentially two options - sit on his hands or rescue Shuri (short of another sideplot, such as him trying to find a cure for Ramonda, but I don't think this story needs to lose what focus it has).

I never really thought of Taku as T'Challa's best friend. I'd have to reread Panther's Rage, but I never actually thought of it as that close of a relationship overall, to be honest. W'Kabi, maybe, but I don't think putting his wife as higher on that list is necessarily a bad thing.
