it would seem you are not in the minority.
i get what you are saying. the people of wakanda are supposed to be exceptional so I can get that criticism. though I get your criticisms I liked the approach he took with his storytelling. it seemed to have elements of realism the while idea of "no one man." i didn't think ororo was lecturing him though, at least when you take into account what happened in issue 17. it was quite the opposite actually. i also don't want ororo leading another school of mutants as those type of stories seem kimitikh for the character.
storm needs to need to be fighting cosmic threats so I would rather her not be involved with any more headmistress duties. I'm hoping when the wakanda space exploration stories are explored she can get a bit of involvement with that.
as I mentioned previously I understand your criticisms here. i didn't read it as if wakanda itself had a rape culture, it seemed more like a fringe portion of wakandans who felt it was acceptable and the total family was too far removed to be aware of it. that said I can still understsnd your points. me personally I think Coates felt with all that happened prior to him becoming the writer his approach made the most sense to show this road to redemption.
I hear ya. For BP fans, it just felt like Hickman already gave us the road to redemption. I mean, T'Challa "killed Namor" then made his peace with Namor, saved the universe, and restored Wakanda to glory, Sign, sealed and delivered with a ribbon and bow on top. None of us wanted additional fabricated redemption (Shuri not being brought back b/c of nonsensical deux ex machina that rectons her planned suicide into T'Challa "abandoning" her in battle) or added arbitrary redemption (Doras disbanding because of negligence to rapes by Wakandan males).
I mean, issue #1 gives us the strong impression that Aneka was well aware that a high ranking official was young girls in his basement, and that she finally had stand up to him b/c none of his male peers cared to. What's ironic is that Aneka killing dude is something T'Challa himself would've done pre-Coates lol. But that act leading to the rebellion of the Doras, compounded by that rape camp tree house and then the stories Shuri was told in dreamland that dealt with Wakandan women dealing with more rape... that felt like a lot of coincidences.
And as black male readers who champion the elevation of black female characters, it felt like a slap in the face that this was the "best" way of elevating female characters in a mytho that already took pride in women being in the highest positions. And then slick comments by the Doras like "Shuri was the good/better ruler", or that speech by the old guy at the end of season 1 to unite/rally Wakanda against Zenzi's control (while taking shots at T'Challa).. er.. in fiction isn't it the main character of the redemption arc who should be saying the speech to rally his country against the bad guys, to come full circle with the.. redemption? Idk.
At some point it gave BP fans a 'sneaking' suspicion that it wasn't about a redemption arc. It was more so about pushing his pet characters and themes (LGBT Doras, old guy, Erza, western government, etc) into the limelight. And when all those attempts failed, it just seemed like wasted attempts that could have gone to a Shuri spin-off or taking the titular character to a different path than the same ol redemption arc about the same topics that have already been addressed for the past 7 years. It just got a bit annoying after a while.
You just described the Bland Panther.
Coates has no experience writing any kind of techno-philosophical, futuristic tales of Afro-progressive achievement. His writing is very uninspiring and does nothing to move T'Challa forward.

That's the greater tragedy. What great things are there to pull from season 1 for the MCU? It'd be idiotic to put rape in there, or paint T'Challa on the wrong side of addressing such things... especially not in our current climate. But all this was the driving force of the Doras rebellion. What else, another "take over the throne" main plot line but with Tetu playing the role of Killmonger? Nah.
Now, given how good an aesthetic job Stelfreeze did on Tetu and Zenzi, I actually could see them popping up as repurposed villains. Zenzi's powerset would be less stupid and more clear cut mystical. And maybe even give her the type of depth and character arc that we thought she was going to get.
But point is, there's no great achievements or feats or forward moving takeaways for BP. In fact, he felt like he took 3 steps back in season 1. I can't comment in season 2, other than some of the stuff yall have shared with me and what i could peace together.
That's why I am looking for to 2018 that is the true year of Bp. A couple minis an annual by the legends of Bp, plus the movie plus the tv show... Forget Coates, try as he may, he can't stop the rise of Bp
The Priest story in the Annual might make me a lil teary eyed. I grew up on that ish 17'ish years ago.
Might be the one time i tolerate "Ross" being the narrative voice. No promises though.
The movie and tv show are the big things. If those comics are good, then that's just some nice whip cream on the cakes. But the cake itself (movie) and accompanying cupcake (cartoon) are looking coma-inducing and diabetic-triggering  :D
At this point given how the stuff before Coates are getting complete collected trades and we’re getting prose novels there is enough reading material out that speaking for myself I don’t need to read Coates stuff especially if Stelfreeze is gone
Just popped in to to see the chatter about upcoming BP comics and appearances.
Things seem pretty cool.

Even something in his wheel House (BP Crew) he managed to fail at to as he just couldn't help himself but to crap on T'Challa. Issue one. Misty busts up americops, plenty of action, is saved by storm. Issue two storm and Misty plenty of action, more americops. Issue four Cage destroys a helicopter after getting blown up essentially, cool moment. Issue 5 Eden does some nightcrawler work on americops, plenty of action. But when it was T'Challas turn to have his moment? Gets scolded by an old lady, fawns over Storm like a puppy and asks if she likes his new Luke Charles look, has some introspective talk with himself about holding the power to change reality and fix his marriage but didn't because he was afraid, and gets caught singing what was probably some stupid crap r&b song then pretends he wasn't... That was Tchallas great Issue? Everyone else has action and does something Cool EXCEPT Tchalla. I mean how much clearer can't Coates get to show people he doesn't like Tchalla and his Mythos?
Just read the new issue and even though I have continually shitted on Coates and will likely do so in the future...
This wasn’t a bad issue at ALL. It’s almost like it was written by a completely different author.
T’Challa is given MAJOR respect in this issue. No shade is thrown his way whatsoever.
Shuri gives a completely in-character and badass speech to Thunderball
The history of Wakanda and the Originators is told in a cool and interesting manner
This is the very FIRST issue I’ve read of Coates run that actually was a pure “page turner” since issue 1. The ending was badass as well.
I am 100% convinced Marvel Editorial told Coates to chill with his bullshit castration of the character. This issue was a complete 180.
Interesting. Seems like Editorial is tightening the leash on Coates as the movie comes closer to release.

Yep.
Have you read the issue? I was ASTONISHED at how much respect T’Challa was getting.

Honestly I doubt editorial works that way. See Dr. Strange when his movie came out.

I want to say it was inevitable that the powers that be would step in and course correct. But they should've done that from jump instead of wasting season 1 with all that hot garbage. Better late than never but never fucking happening is better.
Although it's kinda weird hearing someone comment that no shade was thrown T'Challa's way in T'Challa's own book. It shows how low expectations had sunk when the titular character being treated with respect becomes a pleasant surprise. Maybe one day, it'll become the norm again.
Any idea what the soundtrack of Black Panther is gonna be like? Hearing Vince Staples in the trailer made me go, "oh, whaaat!?"
He's saved me a lot of money. That is a positive I suppose.
I can probably buy even more tickets to the BP movie than I otherwise would've been able to.
Or maybe more BP movie merch to wear to the movie. So positives all around.
You know how to spend your hard-earned money wisely.
