I think futuristic is fine... but going the Star Trek route can make thinks sort of sterile and bland.
What we got instead I think had character. It was futuristic, but still had a sense of history and culture.

Man there is a lot of hate out there though.
Best Picture? Nope. While the film is really good, I don't think it has reached the calibre of winning best picture but if it does , there will be a certain amount of outrage amongst people of the internet.
Best Cinematography, Best costume, best score/soundtrack? Probably
But then again I won't lose sleep if BP doesn't get any Oscar nominations/awards. The fact that a good Black Panther movie exists is fine with me.

There are other ways of ensuring that Wakanda doesn't look like another generic star trek/Bladerunner in terms of aesthetics.
They could have gone with these type of setting if they wanted to go the extra mile but I'm not complaining.

I don't think it wins Best Picture either. However, if its a weak year I can definitely see it being nominated.
I stand by the fact if it had Infinity War level CGI/ending it would be the favorite to win it though.
I personally thought "atlantis" looked exactly how we DIDN'T want Wakanda to look. Basically, big shiny star trek city.
People gloss over how much care Coogler and his team took in making Wakanda feel "real" with African influence. It would have been very easy to simply go, "shiny futuristic" instead.
And yeah... CGI critics (im not really one of them) ) are likely going to have a field day with the huge battles with people riding various fish species. If 3 rhinos triggered people......
I don't think Atlantis would work looking like a "real" city or place.

Finally found a youtube comment (from the Oscar vid) that makes an interesting point.
I think it does deserve an oscar nomination because it did something never seen in any superhero movie. It had more layers than any superhero movie ever made. It covered subjects like Colonialism, isolationism, globalism, American imperialism, African culture and history, African Americans relationship to Africa and Africa's relationship to African Americans and that is before you mention the costumes, score and soundtrack that was well above the level of a regular superhero movie. It covers all this in a really fun family action film. The Dark Knight might have a tighter plot but nowhere near the complexity and cultural layers of Black Panther. I get it when white people claim the movie is mediocre but I think they say this because their ignorance of African and Black culture means they only understand the movie on it's simplest level and the extra intellectual layers go over their heads.
The fact it also adapts Shakespeare including everything else should make it more Oscar worthy not less. The fact some people say it is only good doesn't meant it shouldn't be considered. There are plenty of bad films like Sideways and the Shape of Water that have won Oscars. Suicide Squad won an Oscar. In terms craft, deep themes and new things Black Panther introduced to blockbuster movies that alone should be enough for a nod.

Black panther had one of the largest budget's for a Solo, Coogler wanted to go for a advanced nation with African culture abd history perfectly weaved in. Wakanda had hover vehicle's, Joe Cole said they Wanted Wakanda to be advanced but not in a star wars way but in a way that in say 25-50 year's, the technology could realistically exist to give it a more earth based feel. Coogler nailed it. The issue they ran into cgi wise were the rhino's and the shot where Tchalla abd Erik are falling into the mine up until they knock each other back with a kinetic punch. Other then that the cgi was good

That entire sequence seemed to struggle from reshoots that needed a lot of CGI to be done last minute.
I wonder if they made the rhinos more armored like in the concept art if it would have come out better.
I think the final fight could have been salvaged/great if it was said the suits were totally damaged/shredded not just when the train is coming. Then somehow they take the fight out to the sunset where we get an awesome BP/Bucky style superpowered fight, but the emotional ending of BP.
Could have really helped avoid the CGI issues and took the fight in a brighter location so things could be clear.

Firstly I think Wolverine gets plenty of backlash against him too. No one is embraced by everyone.
Secondly, the BP movie did over a billion dollars. So I think it's fair to say it was at least embraced by a whole lot of people.

I could agree with that comment. To pretend BP isn't Oscar Worthy is laughable at best.
But it's very clear that people hating on the movie are biased. As if this was a white hero they things they complained happening in BP would be praised in that movie. For instance, I guarantee you this that people are going to make a big deal out of Aquaman having a ritual combat for the throne. They will probably say it was awesome and so original and and yada yada

Jungle Action Vol. 2 #21 - A Cross Burning Darkly Blackening the Night

T'Challa is burning on a cross, but don't worry, the narrative says he's totally not a metaphor for the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. As T'Challa burns, the ropes burn free around his feet and he is able to shatter the cross. He then runs to the water with part of the flaming cross still on his back. Frankly, he looks like he should be a lot worse off than he is. Still, he goes to the hospital to heal.
At the hospital, the Sheriff gives more info on Monica's sister's murder. Angela was dating a man named Leroy Carter who dropped her off at her house before she snuck out again. She then went to the real estate office she worked at. The gun was in the office when Angela apparently killed herself. The bullet struck a clock and stopped it at 2:06.
Next, T'Challa and Trublood attend a Klan rally. Honestly, I last read this issue quite a few years ago and this stuff felt more in the past or, at least, less overt and open. Now a days, I'm not so sure. You don't see the people saying it wearing white robes often, but that feels about it. Anyway, the Klan doesn't take kindly to people asking why they set them on fire, so one pulls out a gun. T'Challa responds by kicking everyone's asses. However, one manages to point a gun at him when his back is turned. Just then, Monica's dad jumps and and throws his cards at the Klasman, which distracts him enough for T'Challa to knock him down too.
There's some good moments in this issue, but it wasn't as powerful as the last one. The big thing I liked was the seeding of the clues with Angela's murder. This isn't really a murder mystery, but that's part of the story and it's good to see some progression even if we have no idea how the clues will fit together.

The Wakanda Forever art is horrific. Yeesh.
Dialogue seems... raw? amateurish? Seems like she overtalks the dialogue. Similar to Roxane to an extent. not nearly as bad but still.
Story seems ok.
I don't like this version of Malice. She acts nothing like Malice other than the obsession with T'challa. SHe does get some sick burns off though. Her twitter clapbacks are her most lethal weapon lol
-
I liked it. A few unnecessary characterizations, but fun.
I liked the weapon too. Nnamdi is good at coming up with those.
Must take place before the end of 2nd arc since relationship is still complicated. Lol

And so glad our girl confirmed Ororo and T'challa are OFFICIALLY TOGETHER and with the Xmen.

Jungle Action Vol. 2 #22 - Death Riders on the Horizon

This is a strange, but ambitious issue. Essentially, T'Challa, Monica, and Kevin Trublood are hanging out with Mr. and Mrs. Lynn on their porch while Mrs. Lynn tells a story. The story is of their ancestor, Caleb, who was freed after the Civil War but still stuck in poverty as a sharecropper. The left side of the page is Mrs. Lynn telling the story as it was. The right side of the page has the story as Monica imagines it with everyone in a much less sad state and T'Challa involved as well.
Essentially, Caleb is threatened by the Klan. He goes to the Freedmen's Bureau, but the Republican politicians who work there only make empty promises. In Monica's vision, T'Challa jumps in and beats them up too and he and Caleb agree to make their stand against the Klan.
In the real story, Caleb and his family hurry home, trying to get their before dark. They never make it. They were confronted by one Klansman in particular, who called himself the Soul Strangler and pretended to be a Confederate soldier who died at the Battle of Shiloh. He shoots Caleb in the shoulder, ties a rope around his neck, and hangs him while his his wife and kids are forced to watch. It's a powerful image - one that McGregor doesn't sugarcoat at all. And it's one that, frankly, Monica's fantasy, where T'Challa saves the day and rescues Caleb, feels hollow.
Still, I feel the story has a message about the role of fantasy. Monica isn't completely escaping from the reality of the world she lives in, but she still finds value in the fake version she imagines where people can be heroic and justice can actually happen. In many ways, it's calling attention to itself that this is a comic and it's possible to have heroism and, just maybe, a happy ending that might not be possible in real life.
-
I actually think tchalla will save her or find a way to cure her.
Yeah, I think the tone of this story is far too light for Malice to be killed. T'Challa will save her. Who knows... maybe he might actually steer her in the right direction too.
