Anyone else kinda pumped for the return of shuriiii
I'm def excited, but the way things have been going in the book...I'm also nervous.
The solicits (and Coates) mentioned that she would be "different." What exactly does "different" mean, outside of a slight difference in appearance and a different outfit? I have no idea, and I'm not sure I'm going to like it either :(
Guess we'll find out soon.
I would argue that this story, albeit extremely slow paced is Re-Construction. He's rebuilding the supporting characters around T'challa. He's redefining Wakandan Geography, and establishing new history and characters. Though I'll admit one complaint that is pretty valid is the fact that T'challa is the least interesting character in the book right now. Ramonda, Tehtu, Zenzi, The Midnight Angels, Changamire , hell even Shuri at this point have been what's making the story super interesting. Don't get me wrong I love every page, and it's an amazing story, but T'challa hasn't done anything really memorable or bad ass just yet.
He has Said and shown he is continuing where Hickman was going (before Sw conclusion) and that was deconstruction, and Changing the mythos to fit his agenda. No matter how damaging. This is not reconstruction. Not like Priest. This is forcing things that never happened to negatively effect T'Challa and Wakanda overall. I don't see this ending with any real Victory for T'Challa, Wakanda. Or black men in general.
I think a lot of the issues some of us have would still be there though. We'd still be saying why is BP such a mope? Why can't he get his house in order?
That's an issue with the plots though. Really this should of been two parts 1-6 dealing with the issues of disorder in Wakanda and the MA. 7-12 dealing with the people and Stane. Rather then 3 acts that have T'Challa not doing anything at all and not pushing the plot. Or the story could of stayed the same with more showing T'Challa actually doing things. I think it's fine to have him struggling. He solves a problem and another arises. However, Coates just had him doing nothing until Issue 5

I am mostly so we don't get those annoying pages anymore.
I finally read WoW. I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
They need to get rid of those thought balloons though.

I agree with that
Here in lies part of the problem with his writing. I really don't think that Coates meant to portray Wakanda as a state that condones misogyny or Wakandan men as uncaring. I think it's an issue he wanted to tackle but also make the women active agents in their own liberation. However, due to the slow pace, his focus on his pet characters, and juggling other plotlines; the reader is left going, "How long as this been going on? Why hasn't T'Challa or somebody done something before this?"
Perhaps so. Unfortunately, it is all on panel. :(

#8 was my favorite issue yet. I think. Read it very quickly because I have to my son's thanksgiving program lol. So I may go bak and nit pick the dialogue to death or something nerd like lol
This issue was 100% shuri stuff btw.
It had absolutely no action whatsoever but T'challa inner monologues were on point.
As for Shuri's new powers... I think basically
[spoil]she is a living encyclopedia of Wakandan history[/spoil]
We also got the origin of sorts (in monologue form) of T'challa soul tracking ability he has now.
All in all... I like it. Feels like more set up (somehowe despite being in issue 8) but good set up.

Their are signs that Coates is building Wakanda back up. When he came in on the book Shuri was dead, Wakanda was in shambles, and The Dora Miljae had broke from T'challa. Now Shuri's getting a new power set , and all around superior way of thinking. She's about to be one of if not Wakanda's biggest asset. The Dora Miljae had tensions with T'challa coming out of secret war, now that tension is being addressed in a BIG WAY and their role is being to the point where they now have a fanbase, and are carrying their own book for the foreseeable future. Furthermore, blame it on a editorial oversight or whatever, but we now know that Doom Invaded, Atlantis Invaded, then The Black Order Invaded. Somethings got to give, it would be downright fairy tale to believe that the people of Wakanda wouldn't be up in arms with the Royal Family after three invasions. So Coates has jumped right into it from day one. This whole story revolves around Wakanda dealing with this issue and possibly changing their government for the better.
If Coates were still Deconstructing, Shuri would be dead , Ramonda would be dead, T'challa would still be moping about how he has to prove himself as king like he was back in issue 2. Wakanda wouldn't be having a revolution, they'd be having an invasion and bodies would be getting picked off left and right like they did under Hickman , Mayberry and Hudlin.

The amount of positive "OH ****!!" moments needed in the remaining issues to make up for the slow pacing and the fuckery we've witness earlier this season is pretty big, imho.
I just don't want to get Dooomwar'd at this point.
Yes, my expectations are that low, lol

Coates had months before the BP solo was announced, and secret wars ended where he would of known the conclusion. and there is deconstruction. Where he picked off of, everything was reset back to NA 1 no incursion. As for BP:WOW, We will see, that wasn't really a strong opening for the Doras and i think they are still too neew to be having their own book. That should of been a book for Shuri, Hell, I would love to see what Shuri was doing AvX, NA etc rather then the Doras because She is more established, and given how Gay portrayed them, it was lust at first sight, followed by a Disney's "Wakanda High" vibe with a Star wars ep 2 level of forced interest between the protagonist that rivals Anakin and Padme's extremely awkward budding relationship.
We already knew that had happened and there were invasions, coates didn't enlighten us to it, and after Both Doom War AND AvX Hickman addressed on panel that Wakanda was stronger then ever on both occasions. And this is Comics, this is fiction. Do you know how many times things will be addressed and over and done? this could of easily been a story about Wakanda showing that they will not falter and why they are the beacon of hope for the entire planet. And this shouldn't be about Wakanda changing its government considering that they have had 10k years of sucuss and one of T'Challa's major perks and draws is that he is a monarch of the most advanced nation on earth and this is very important to the mythos, and No that is not how deconstruction works. This IS a deconstruction story still, because Wakanda has been reduced to a third world country, men are shown as rapist, abusers, traffickers, misogynists, and inept, onto o f pitting black men vs Black women and playing it off as thoguh the women in Wakanda do not have equalrights when that is so far from the truth is astounding that Coates would even try to play it off as fact. I think issue nine works. You can kinda look at it like this..
Book 1, issues 1-4: Tearing apart Wakanda and T'challa
- Rape camps, MA break away, rise of Tetu and Zenz, Stane joining the party, ends with the golden city bombed and Ramonda just about killed
Book 2, issues 4-8: Rise of T'challa
- Begins to be more offensive, attacks various suicide bomber installations, with attacking the MA (failed but he did), gets a bomber to switch sides, attacks Stane and not only force a retreat but gets a "confession" out of him that destroys the Peoples argument. Ends with the rise of full villain Zenzi and Tetu and with the return of Shuri.
Book 3, issues 9-12: Final Confrontation
- this is where we will see the re-united Royal Family confront the People, the MA, and Stane, hopefully resulting in a fully united Wakanda once again and with the defeat of the PEople.

There was an interview where he flat out said that he didn't have the ending to Secret Wars when he wrote Season 1. Marvel editorial messed that all up across the board. Namor shouldn't have been hunted down by SS. The Zebra kids, Pod, and Hyperion shouldn't even be here.

The ending of SW has got to be one of hte most confusing things that i've ever seen
How do you end a huge ass event like that that changes various Marvel universes... and not get on the same page on what exactly happened? They couldn't even pick a damn Gem! Let alone get across exactly what was going on between T'challa's time/reality gem and whatever Reed/Molecule Man did

Isn't issue 8 supposed to be the start of act 3? I forget. First trade was 4 issues so I would assume book 2 would be 4 issues as well and book 3 would be the last 4.
This issue really seem like the end of act 2 though.
You would THINK act III would be violence everywhere... but I have a feeling Shuri is gonna do some lecturing to the MA, Chang is gonna lecture whoever is around, and T'challa gonna be like "god damn, can I just go back to Space already ****"

Just read #8. Real brief review, will go in detail later.
Long story short...this was pretty good. Good portrayals overall, art of was solid, dialogue was solid, and the pacing was good as well.
Might be the best issue of the season so far.

I really liked the reference to Sundiata in this issue. One of my favorite stories.

i read the issue, indeed the best to date, I do wish it had some set up and i ma not fond of the whole Maximus made it look easy. But he tried to explain it by saying they expanded on the theory. I don't like the trope of forcing Wakanda's Mythos down the enslavement of girls and women when that isn't the case at all and Women are equal to the men.
Also annoying of having the men come off as weak and Timid while the women seen to be the only ones getting Sh*t done.
Other then that, it was a set up issue. Im glad it focused on T'Challa and Shuri and had a good interaction with the crew. Next issue needs to be explosive though now that Shuri is back. I want to see some Good action and the DM and all that start to be handled.
Overall a better issue i wih it had some action though as i feel like this is starting to lose readers interests. Coates needs to hype of this last part up (and deliver on the pay off for all this build up) Time will tell but this was probably a 7-7.5/10 maybe a 8.

Just gave the issue a reread. Best issue by Coates so far.
-Once again, the cover by Stelfreeze and Laura Martin is awesome.
-The art was on point, props to Chris Sprouse.
-The dialogue and pacing were well done. Good portrayals overall for every character. Props to Coates on that.
-T'Challa's monologue was very good.
-The final Djalia was good as well. The best one, imho.
-Happy to see Shuri return to the living. Curious on how her new powers will work.
Overall, good, solid issue. I'm actually looking forward to #9. Hopefully that this trend continues, this season ends strong, and that we don't get Doomwar'd lol.

I actually don't have too much of a problem of Men being superior to woman waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day. Even in Wakanda. That is unfortuantely just how things were back in the day (and still is in lots of the world now).
I just expect, based on what we have been told in previous runs, for Wakanda to become "enlightened" much earlier than the rest of the world.

Doom War has forever scarred me.
This feels like a Doom War ending
I hope T'challa has Tetu dead to rights, beaten down at his mercy. And he starts the monologue where he admits some of his thinking is correct and you think he is going to let Tetu live...
next page... "but you bombed my mom" all Magneto in first class style
Double page throat slit FTW (ok ok ok... double page force push if we are being honest lol)

I see what your saying, Though the problem is that Caotes was still acting as thoguh in present day Wakanda, That Men were Superior to Women and that they were not equals and Women were still there to be given to other men. Thats my gripe

Well, that was a big improvement from the last issue.
Hopefully good things to come in the next few issues
-
I really enjoyed the issue and Shuri's new look is great.
I was lucky enough to get the last Ribic cover. I'm tempted to double dip and get the Stelfreeze cover too.
For the first time in this series I'm looking forward to the next issue.
-
Just read the issue and I enjoyed it. As others have mentioned, the art and the dialogue/monologues were great. I like the concept of the Djalia and "Mother" and I would like to see both again. I enjoyed the stories of Wakanda's past. It was interesting learning about past Wakandans who were not the BP. I look forward to learning more about Shuri and her abilities.
I also like T'Challa working with Eden. I think they make for a cool duo.

But it was probably the best Shuri: Guest-starring Black Panther issue yet!

According to Coates, Shuri's powerset will resemble something similar to that of a Bard class of D&D, with a bit of a Griot tradition.
Bard class: Versatile, capable of combat and of magic (Divine magic in earlier editions, arcane magic in later editions). Bards use their artistic talents to induce magical effects.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bard_(Dungeons_%26_Dragons)
Griot: West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet and/or musician. The griot is a repository of oral tradition and is often seen as a societal leader due to his traditional position as an advisor to royal personages.

Agreeing with you 100% on this.
Coates stays just as clueless as an inept and uncaring Marvel Editorial have allowed him to be.
