The Black Panther movie is going to be coming out during a Trump Presidency.....
think about that.
The irony is that T'Challa is a smart handsome rich bad-ass. He would actually be the type of man Trump would admire...up until BP said something Trump didn't like. Then it's be, "The Black Panther is a nasty person!"
Deadliest of the Species
Shuri ate the HSH and was put in front of Bast for judgment and whether she was worthy of the powers.
And "Bast as the source of powers" was shown waaaaaaaay back during Peter Gillis 4 issue story.
Plus in Hickman's F4, Bast was going to gladly strip Shuri of her powers if T'challa wanted him. Instead he chose to be King of the Dead and was powered by Bast.
Oh now I remember. I was only thinking of the KOTD scenario. I'm sure it'll be handled that way, or in a similar manner.
I wonder if this election will have any effect on Coogler, Chadwick Boseman, and company going into filming. I also wonder if it's going to effect Coates going forward. With a Trump presidency looming we need positive depictions of a strong Black hero more than ever.
I doubt it. Some management person thinking something like, "black people don't like sci-fi so get rid of the those flying cars" is more of a threat to the film than Trump is.
Even if Coates started satirizing Trump in the comic, it'd still be slow moving with bad fight scenes :p
Honestly i saw it as n matter who win's between Trump and Hilary, its still a lose lose situation as both of them are horrible. But as long as BP is still moving forward and going strong there may be hope still
T'challa wasn't even in the first issue of World of Wakanda.
I don't really care for these Coates characters so I didn't end up picking it up
So WoW #1...
the DM part of the story...
Might be the most basic and worst comic i've read in a long, long time.
The thought bubbles are just... so damn bad. I mean... YEESH. That was amateur-ish.
The Zenzi part...
Not bad. Moved a little quick IMO but the writing was solid. Didn't expect [spoil]Tetu to appear so soon [/spoil]
BTW, the comics go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back to AvX. Did this story really need to be told?
Afua Richardson's art was gorgeous but that 10 pages story really isn't enough to make me get a $4.99 book I don't really care for.

And Gay said that the Dora's don't need T'Challa and can stand on their own...

But this is why you don't try and use some new characters and tell some old ass story thats been long forgotten and placed at the farthest part of fans minds. I mean AvX was shit wall to wall and Gay thought it would be a good idea to bring that back up again?..

My thoughts now.. Such a shame that this is the spin off book we get.. Well i'll check it out later, Hey maybe i'll be right about Zenzi and she can turn out to be a cool character.
Man, there are so many BP spinoff books I would be more interested in than this.
Zuri/Ross comedy book
Shuri
QDJ and the white gorilla cult
etc
Could we see a change in Zenzi, and she becomes a BP love interest? Haven't read it yet, but from previews, it look like they are trying to build sympathy for her. Usually happens when you want to make a villain redeemable.
Wouldn't that make her somewhat redundant?
Princess Zanda already fits that role in the mythos

Maybe I am being overly critical because... well... last night happened. Or maybe because ive been readign a lot of back issues lately for the blog...
But it was BAD writing.

I'll be checking out later to see for myself, but honestly the preview pages didn't look that great. the Dialogue seemed too... Western? Thats the vibe i got. However, i do look forward to reading Zenzi's stuff (in the back of my mind im still secretly rooting for her to be redeemed and become a love interest, even if it wasn't in the traditional way but more so flirtatious interactions atleast)
Maybe what bothers me the most is the fact that Gay and Coates seem cocky and j bet they both share the sentiment that they don't need T'Challa and those characters can thrive without him. Which is idiotic because Batman and Spiderman spin offs had to establish those characters First before they could stand on their own yet here, it's been rushed and agenda based. I fear this will fail. Hopefully the 3rd title will fare better.
Wouldn't that make her somewhat redundant?

True, but we are dealing with people who don't respect the mythos. In their minds, it's probably original.
Wouldn't that make her somewhat redundant?

Zanda has no powers or anything like that, as a love interest she doesn't bring anything exciting to the table.
She is closer to comedy relief than a Catwoman/Dragon Lady type.
Spotted T'Challa within Today's Issue of POWER MAN & IRON FIST #10.
yeah, one of the background heroes
I read World of Wakanda. It was fine. I liked the second story a lot. The first story just seemed very simplistic and in your face. It basically telegraphed everything you were supposed to understand and that was it. If it were an anthology book in the vein of "Choosing Sides," I'd be OK with it because there isn't time for proper development, but they're ongoing characters. Maybe it was the rush to push them all the way through training and to get their assignments in one issue that caused this. My hope is they can take the time to properly develop things going forward.
It did have a throwback with thought bubbles. I tend to understand why they appear dated, but I also love reading old comics so I can't completely fault them. It's good to have a diversity of styles in comic books. If this book can make thought bubbles work, more power to them.

First story was so simplistic it was insulting.
ANd the thought bubbles were like someone who can't write comics trying really really hard and failing spectacularly

My detailed review of WoW #1:
Zenzi's story >>>>> Aneka/Ayo's
Nakia/Okoye >>>>> Aneka/Ayo
And major spoiler:
[spoil]Rectangular thought captions >>>>> cumulus cloud thought captions[/spoil]
Whether she ends up smoochin BP (unlikely) or getting punched in the face by Shuri (likely), Zenzi has the "it" factor to be prime time. She has the look, the powerset, and the background to be compelling if the cards are played right. This 10 pager reinforced that to me.

I reread the Zenzi story and correct me if I am wrong but, Damisa Sarki refers only to T'challa right?
He wasn't even the king when AvX happened....

Yea, that's T'Challa.
He officially wasn't King, but Wakandans still called him king anyway throughout the Mayberry run, the Liss run, and the Hickman run. Even Shuri when talking about T'Challa to other Wakandans would refer to him as "your king", in some occasions.

Agrees completely and. Should've alternated the main and back ups every 2 or 3 issues, so all the characters could get equal focus
On a positive note, the beginning of Zenzi story that weaved from the past and present was good stuff.
It was well executed, a little fast but well done.

Second dont count out Zenzi just yet, she may just land that rose and kiss from T'Challa yet and they may become... T'CHENZI!!
But yes Zenzi's story was miles ahead of the MA story. Seriously the Aneka and Ayo portion was like reading a Teenage girl's cliche love story. I mean come on, when [spoil]Aneka and Ayo met and that whole beautiful comment?[/spoil] That was hella Cheesy lol. Sh**ty/cheesy writing, rushed, lack of any type of build up or substance, Cliche as all hell, and it felt way too western, like this could be taking place in America rather then feeling like we were getting a look into Wakanda and its culture. If this was motivated by Scandal then its off to a rough start for sure.
And its not like i am rooting for the book to fail or anything, but its pretty funny when Gay makes a comment like "They don't need T'Challa, they can stand on their own" and we get....

zenzi's story was better and i wish it got the lions share of the panel time rather then the last 10 pages. But i will say im not thrilled with the retconning of Why Wakanda is so successful. Other then that the story seems like it could be very good. I feel it could be even better if Zenzi actually ended up becoming an ally to T'Challa so that way this off story would make more sense because she is a villain turned hero rather then just a villain for 1 season then whatever happens after that. Thoughts of BP: WoW #1.
Pros:
-Art for Dora story is alright
-Art for Zenzi story is great. As good as Chris Sprouse has been, I'd prefer Afua Richardson to be the second arc artist of the main BP book.
-Zenzi's story was overall pretty good. Pace is kinda fast but Yona Harvey did well on this.
Cons
-The Dora story. Super fast pace, and not in a good way. Almost makes some of Hudlin's earlier stories feel like slowburn style lol. Very little buildup concerning Aneka and Ayo's affection. Happens too quickly, imho.
-The story telling structure for the Dora story also seems kinda off.
-Dora story: too wordy when the dialogue could be trimmed down.
-It's obvious Roxane Gay is very new to comic book writing, and dare I say comics in general. I don't think she wrote fiction before (correct me if I'm wrong), and it shows. Hopefully she improves.
-The Dora story has a lot of....cheesy moments, and not the good kind lol.
-I echo everyone's sentiments about the thought bubbles....bleh.
Def looking forward to the Zenzi story (never thought I'd say that). I wish Yona Harvey was the one writing both stories.
The Dora story is lacking right now.

I thought WOW was an Anthology Book?
I mean these are flashback stories that by definition have to end once they get to the beginning of BP#1.

The Doras look like teenagers, which i thoguht it was already past that in terms of their age. I thoguht this was the Dora milaje training facility not Wakanda high.
Yona should of had full issue for her story for real. It has way more potential the Disney's Wakanda High

I'm not sure it actually retcons anything (although, if it did, it's been retconned before). The only thing I can see is that Nigandans believe Wakanda conquered some of their territory.

lol Coats laughs at your male power fantasy!
Remind me again... Zenzi and the MA are supposed to be the (misguided, perhaps) VILLAINS, right?
In the main book, yes. Obviously, a prequel shows how they got to where they are.

They're saying the Nigandans believe that. It doesn't make it true. I don't know how that takes away from the mythos.
