BP, written by Geoff Johns, followed through on his threats. Geoff wrote BP the same way Priest did.
I remember Geoff Johns writing T'Challa. Honestly, I really wasn't that impressed. I thought he was more predictable and way less cerebral than Priest's BP. But he was a far cry better than just about all of the writers that followed. I stopped reading regularly after that DoomWar tragedy. The only writer I liked after Priest was Jason Aaron during Secret Invasion.

I'd like to see Waids take on BP.

Well, it was a team setting that Johns wrote BP in. Like you said, Johns' BP in nothing the suffering fellow we see now. I do hope BP's Job-like tragedies brings him to a better horizon.
Jason Aaron is very controversial in regards to BP fans, myself included. He is responsible for two polar opposite portrayals of BP. It seems he is writing the Secret Invasion version of BP currently in the Original Sins series, but that story has not concluded so the jury is still out on him.
Aaron has posted statements indicating his love for the character (despite an infamous depiction), but we have all heard that before. Something about the way Aaron talks about BP makes me speculate that he will be the next writer handling T'Challa.

I would be very open to that.

Point Man... Manhattan Project Creative Team... A clear vote of confidence from the company (Marvel/Disney)... Start with these concepts and give Black Panther an actual chance to succeed not the same standard issue effort!
Musical Chairs Architects... Ridiculous retcon reboots... Ensembles casts... Job outs... These lead to the same outcomes and have proven to not work time and time again!
A huge marketing effort was put into The Guardians of The Galaxy movie and it received a nice box office payday for all the trouble over a talking raccoon that hardly anyone ever heard of!
Black Panther... Significant Other/Love Interest... Rogues Gallery... Wakanda... Period!
This... But put some real backbone in it with a much more clear agenda to succeed minus the Slow Burn and throw some more merchandise in there as well!
Priest and Hudlin did not write Black Panther with Disney money on the table so it was not as if the "Politically Correct" executives were in the boardroom asking who the character in the cat suit was that they missed to make money off of!
I would bet that if the right Disney executive discovered Priest's Black Panther right as he was doing it it would have become then their Guardians of The Galaxy but instead you had certain Fanbratti blocking that and creating friction with no real support for the character!
Whoever plays the "Point Man" for the Black Panther needs to scan the boardroom for that one or two executives and do what Bob Morton did in the 1987 Robocop movie to get him made... Bypass some people that are blocking Black Panther!
In the event that a new "Architect" comes on to write a solo Black Panther comic once again the same problems with arise and usually the writer will fatigue out under the weight and pressure of maintaining the Black Panther as a viable character because deep down they bare not living vicariously through him as they would for Spiderman and Batman!
Hudlin and Priest made the most money and had the longest runs on Black Panther so to ignore those blueprints is throwing money in the fireplace!
Ensembles are a cop out just to keep the character afloat when all true A-list characters start paying their own bills at some point!
AND... It's getting to the point of stupidity that you don'y TRY to seek out a black audience other than the 41,000 remaining fans hemorrhaging away at a Slow Burn pace!
If you actually placed an accountant on Black Panther strictly for the money alone they would insist on another Priest or Hudlin and never look back!
New Architect: "Whooooooopeeee... I just got the writing job for Black Panther my absolute favorite character not named Peter, Bruce, Clark, Logan, Reed or Sailor Moon I swear!"
Flex Hectic: "Let me get a good look at you..."
(Examines demeanor, proper stance and political ideologies are checked)
Flex Hectic: "I say you start off with a huge first issue spike and then by the 15th issue you start to fatigue out and the book gets cancelled by issue 19!"
New Architect: "But I love me some Black Panther I swear I'll make him A-list... I have multiple guest appearances scheduled for him and quite a few on panel feats!"
Flex Hectic: "No make that 12th issue fatigue and cancelled by issue 14... Thanks for coming!"
New Architect: "DUDE... I love me some black people my best friend is black! I read the Autobiography of Malcolm X 10 times! All my exes are black!"
Flex Hectic: "Okay 9 issues then... I think we are done here!"
-
I get where folks like Maj and FLEX are coming from, and their concerns echo my own worries for this series.
I'm enjoying the story Hickman is weaving overall, and I truly believe that the only satisfying ending is one with T'Challa at the top, solving this problem, but I also know that T'Challa's been in this position before, and been left high and dry.
So while I continue to read the book and enjoy it (I, for one, am glad T'Challa did not pull the trigger), I do so with a watchful eye.

If I may ask, since I've been out of the loop, what books have Aaron written that portray Panther differently?
Priest and Hudlin did not write Black Panther with Disney money on the table so it was not as if the "Politically Correct" executives were in the boardroom asking who the character in the cat suit was that they missed to make money off of!

Both Priest and Hudlin had the full backing of Quesada during their runs. And Hudlin, (Mannn!!!) with all of the crossovers and publicity he got for his run, if the stories were better, I think Panther would have sold more over the long run and been more of a staple in the universe. I would have liked to have Priest writing with that many crossovers and marketing. For instance, even though Mayberry didn't follow through with his promise of Panther relevance, the way that Doomwar ended, with a lot of the worlds vibranium being rendered inert (if I remember correctly) that subject could have reverberated through all of the rest of the Marvel books...stories with heroes and villians being affected positively and negatively, even some of both sides coming after Panther some sort of way. (Then again, i havent read in a while so maybe this was addressed on some scale that I'm unaware of.)
My point being that Panther has had backing before but either was written well and not marketed to the fullest, or marketed to the hilt and not written well in a truly lasting way. BP is not even on the cartoon anymore. If Guardians can be pulled out of someone's back pocket and open this well with not much of a current world popularity, so can BP. I don't know if Marvel thinks its a non-white character thing, or a plain ol' popularity issue, but BP can have success if revisited properly. And done so in a good way with out neutering T'Challa.

If there is one cool thing about all this is that the Black Panther is still just one turn of a page away from being that dude worldwide!
At least now there others clamoring for a Black Panther movie and even actors putting it out there that they are available for that duty if the call is made unlike when it was only Wesley Snipes on the case!
There is a unique possibility that by default Black Panther could surpass even Batman if the right formula is applied because thus far it is like all the departments of this intellectual property are no where near being on the same page and this could be the breakout character for years to come just at the moment fans fatigue out on the other numerous sequels of the same ole heroes!
The fact that Black Panther is so blocked means that someone somewhere fears something like this could happen so it's like a subtle sabotage right at the moment of truth!
We don't know what would happen if Mickey Mouse gave this character it's full protective attention from the movies to the video games to the cartoons and to the comics!
If suddenly Black Panther was given the Spiderman treatment with no compromises and went all in on all fronts this could be the winner in the way Nolan's Batman has become!
Now that Hickman a top "Architect" has had his run inside an protective ensemble cocoon and Black Panther has not gotten any closer to A-list this proves that this was not the best route and even if some don't like Hudlin's most lucrative run he still formulated a blueprint that if a "Point Man" borrowed from could take that next step towards A-list because then a much better cartoon can be produced taking it to the next level!
All one has to do is make adjustments and improvements to Hudlin's concepts and make a bigger run at them while maintaining a Priest like persona in the process... This does not mean do exactly what Hudlin did but a legitimate attempt to surpass what he did dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's in the process!
Also... Seriously folks a lack of rogues gallery to drive the meta plot is just ridiculous and someone at some point has to flesh out those black super villains properly and stop running from them as if they don't work!
If a talking raccoon can score big at the box office then so can Princess Zonda, Malice, Killmonger and Achebe gain prominence... Just watch the current African Leaders Summit in Washington D.C. and gain some perspective of African mannerisms and lose last years negro stereotypes and actually work as hard on their villainy as one does Magneto and Doom!
Don't release total B.S. and then act like you put in work when really you didn't... The character needs your attention to detail then give it your all and don't miss a thing!
At this point financially we already know what sells and what works so returning to the same ole musical chair writers to accomplish the same ole things has become insanity!
If your Black Panther power point presentation does not include Hudlin and Priest on a projection chart you have to have your temperature taken before you move forward... And thoroughly drug tested too!
This right here is Dan Snider Washington Redskins stupidity waiting to unfold before the world...
Seeing how Hickman took stuff from Priest doesn't that make your whole argument moot or are you gonna flip flop some more and cherry pick aka hear what you wanna hear?
Hickman said he was looking to Priest's run as an inspiration for the character, that doesn't mean he isn't putting his own spin on the material.
I think the issue that FLEX and others have is that writers post-Hudlin deconstruct T'Challa ala Priest but then either are hindered or deliberately keep from building him back up. When you have a character that is perpetually being broken down, stripped to his core, etc., you end up with a character that always loses.
This is what can make Hickman's run so frustrating, especially in light of what I would call his most famous run: Fantastic Four. In that book Hickman was handed a team that, similar to T'Challa, people like, but no one really knew what to do with. Hickman deconstructed the team, but also built in a foundation (no pun intended) that expanded them into the future, ending in a glorious return and celebration of Marvel's First Family.
I believe we all, as fans of Black Panther and T'Challa, want that kind of rebirth for him.
But we've seen derailment, and so it's hard to trust writers with long-term plans. Especially when we see in other books *cough* East of West *cough* where that writer does seemingly much more in a similar format.
I trust Hickman to pull it off (plus I like slow-burn anyway), but I feel where the others are coming from.
When has Bendis ever been a writer of BP other than AvX?
That was point. BMB hasn't written a whole lot with BP and with AvX, he was one of 4 writers. I guess you could criticize him for the trip and fall in AoU, but it doesn't make sense to blame him for any overall trend in the handling of T'Challa.

JUst read my friend's copy of NA#21. Having not read the character in a while, its good to see T'Challa in the forefront of things.
I see the crying panels everyone is talking about. It does seem a bit much for T'Challa to be slobbering from the mouth and breaking down like that. Even if he is battling with his conscious and the spirits of his father and other family and past BP's. I don't know if it was supposed to be implied that everything my boys have told me he has gone through recently has finally overwhelmed him, (Divorce, losing the throne, Wakanda shunning him because he is working with Namor, whatever else i don't know) but that one panel with the tears and spit...maybe him just falling to his knees and a few tears falling from his eyes with a straight, dejected looking face would have been a better depiction for T'Challa.
-
Smoov-E...
I would erase some things done by Hudlin like the marriage that we now know would have no real in-house support, the Doom ambush that set up a long list of terrible things that happened to T'challa and the cartoon would still move forward but with a better animation software to match the genius level intellect of the main character!
Now as far as what I would keep from other writers the Hickman's King of The Dead title would go to Killmonger because his name is ever so obvious for it and Necropolis seems more like a villains lair than a hero's hangout... Maberry's Shadow Physics is a whole sandbox worth of toys to use as plot rescuing devices to explain T'challa's Mary Sue like abilities... David Liss did have T'challa show an uncanny aptitude to make Radioshack products into high tech gadgets so no reason to lose that MacGyver like trait!
Now as far as Hickman borrowing from Priest that's obvious because every writer borrows something the problem comes when you can't finalize it without jobbing him out in the end even if your build up showed T'challa being that BOSS that Priest did 80% of the time!
I could always "Flip Flop" and "Cherry Pick" the Roy Thomas angle if you like...
Point Man: "STOP THE RANGE ROVER SIR... I think we just ran over T'challa and have been dragging him through the mud for at least the past five miles or so!"
T'challa: "Please stop the truck my boot is caught on the rear fender!"
-
after the battle is an appropriate time. Crying instead of acting = failure. That T'Challa did this in front of other heroes is not characteristic of how he had previously been portrayed
How many times has he been asked to kill billions of children?
-
I really have to check out priests run. I've heard so many good things about it.
I don't have a problem with t'challa crying. He's a character and he has the same right to emote as any of the other characters. I understood his despair and it really made me crave a black panther ongoing
