http://graphicpolicy.com/2010/07/08/10-questions-with-jonathan-maberry/
JM: The story was always about international politics and the ethics of war, so Marvel knew where I was going from the jump, and as I said, they were completely supportive. My editor, Axel Alonso, has been a valuable advisor, making very intelligent suggestions for where to dial up the action or plug in a recap. But they let me tell the story I wanted to tell.
They also did not interfere with my characterization. I told them up front that I was going to deconstruct the motives and methods of Doctor Doom and T’Challa. I do not belief in pure untainted good anymore than I believe in absolute evil. Doom has sometimes been portrayed as ‘Evil’, with not dimension to it; and too often T’Challa has been the spotless hero. I wanted to build the story around their flaws, explore their worldview, and watch as they re-assemble themselves into new shapes.
There we go! That's the interview. Let's re-read the bold.
Doom has SOMETIMES been portrayed as one-note evil. So Mayberry aimed to fix that those few occurrences. Which he didn't do, as Doom was the exact same calculating person that he's generally been. He wasn't some brainless marauder. So that was a complete BS and weak excuse to write Doom as prominent as he did.
As for BP, he said that he has TOO OFTEN been a spotless hero. Which is complete and utter crap to anyone with an ounce of integrity, or to anyone who has read more than Hudlin's pre-coma run. So JM aimed to fix BP's "spotless record", by almost breaking the character, and then re-assembling him in a non-existent manner.
His level of dishonesty (on top of not showing Storm as being completely bad-arse throughout the run as he heavily implied) is why I question anyone who thinks that Doomwar was good.

Imagine going to see Expendables and then there is no action, fighting, gun slinging explosion scenes--imagine them standing around in a bunker. That's Doomwar. Imagine buying a martial arts flick, where the master was killed and the student trained his *** off to get revenge, only to do nothing to stand around for the rest of the film and then get slapped down. That's Doomwar. It was a event that had potential, but personal bias got in the way.
Any one who says that T'challa is spotless, flawless or perfect doesn't have a real grasp of Black Panther.

But mess with Black Panther, and s**t will hit the fan.

For some, a writer is only as good as his last story. I hope Aaron continues on this path with BP.
Azari is alternate future only, so it should not be that big a deal. BP may never sire kid's in our lifetime.

Nice Cover.
I was telling peeps that there were only 2 ways Doomwar could have possibly ended WHEN IT CAME OUT.
Heads will want to bring up Doctor Voodoo series as a counter point but nobody bought that thing.
When your designated villain has a (far) bigger fanbase than the hero of the piece these issues will occur.
My only surprise was that I honestly expected Wakanda to get blown the hell up or thrown into a pocket dimension and it didn't happen.

Honestly, no one cares about Doomwar. If we didn't mention it here--it would not be brought up. I mean, Liss, Hickman and others have totally overwritten the story. Marvel knows it wasn't a good tale either way. It screwed Panther imho, big time and killed any excitement that was built up during that period.

Storm doesn't have to be the mother. It was never confirmed in the movie either and dude doesn't have the blue eyes. Even though we all assume it's our Storm, who knows T'challa might get with a Alt. Storm.

For all we know Azari and Kymera are from two different timelines.
Or they could be brother and sister.
Or one of them could be a Terminator like robot sent from the future to murder Tony Stark.
OK, maybe I'm reaching a bit there.
GP: What was the genesis of DoomWar? Where did the idea come from?

Jonathan Maberry: I originally plotted it out as the second arc on my Black Panther run, following Power (issues #7-12). But two things happened. First, the story grew in the telling and pretty soon we realized that this was not a Black Panther story. It was a Doctor Doom story in which the Black Panther and a number of other Marvel characters would play crucial roles.
So in a nutshell, Maberry basically outed himself as regards the fact that it was always his intention to write a Doom-centric story which for all intents and purposes, really should have played out within the pages of the Black Panther book.
He basically turned T'Challa, Storm, Shuri and Wakanda into side characters in a book dedicated to Dr Doom.
I remember saying this back in the day only to be mocked and accused of being too harsh in my denigration of Maberry's Doomwar only to now find out that I was right about the duplicity of the events origins. :smh:

Jonathan Maberry: And, the sales of Black Panther were declining. That’s a hard book to keep flying, and it’s died under a lot of good writers. There are some challenges with it in terms of marketing: the character is street-level, meaning he doesn’t have much in the way of super powers. He’s not African-American (which plays moderately well with the predominantly white comic audience), T’Challa is African. It’s hard to keep any book running with a character who isn’t American. Ask Captain Britain and Alpha Flight. Wolverine is an exception because he’s been largely based in the USA. Also, the Panther is black. There has always been resistance to black leading characters. Not on the part of the comic companies…hell, Marvel would LOVE to have every race represented with a unique book. But the readers don’t buy it in numbers that keep the product viable.

I find Maberry's assertions about "BP books dying under a lot of good writers" laughable in the extreme especially when takes into consideration the fact that pre-Maberry, the only BP run that got cancelled was Christopher J. Priest's which ran for 62 full issues.
Hudlin's run was never cancelled which means that Maberry himself was at the helm when his BP run got cancelled.
So in essence pre-Maberry, the Black Panther monthly ongoing (written by a great writer) was only cancelled once.

Jonathan Maberry: So, with the Panther book slipping toward being shelved and a concept that was outgrowing its source, Marvel decided to break DoomWar out and make it a standalone project.
The story at the core of DoomWar is taken from the headlines of every newspaper in the world. These are key issues, common issues. And I was so thankful that Marvel allowed me a tremendous amount of freedom of action in writing that book.

At this point if it wasn't crystal clear before, it' pretty damn obvious that Maberry clearly had ZERO grasp of the Black Panther character and mythos and this is clearly illustrated by his mischaracterization of T'Challa as being "street level" in his own words.
He should never have been allowed anywhere near T'Challa and the BP mythos.

Alright. So Azari is not from 616. It has not been confirmed that Kymera is BP's daughter however it's most likely BP's.
They should bring us Sky Panther and Sh’ri.
If they could give us more, T'wari, Unnamed Twins (Sisters), T’chaka (Older Brother), Unnamed Male Sibling (Younger Brother), also

So now we have proof to verify what we already knew from that hot, smoldering pile of mutated High Evolutionary style horse feces of a story.

Wait. So the Kirby run's ending doesn't count as a cancellation?
It wasn't exactly Kirby's choice to leave. Pretty much every book he wrote for Marvel in the 70's got cancelled 2001:Space Odyssey, The Eternals and Devil Dinosaur.
If Captain America hasn't been a venerable title he'd of gotten that cancelled too.
Fandom wasn't ready for the insanity that was post-Stan Lee Kirby.
All those books are crazy as hell.

Two writers (pre-Maberry) does not exactly make a veritable deluge of good writers under whom a title is alleged to have died.
And does anything you've typed here take away from the veracity of Maberry's own testimony?
Thanks for providing the exhibit B link Brotha FLEX.
So now we have proof to verify what we already knew from that hot, smoldering pile of mutated High Evolutionary style horse feces of a story.
The proof was on the pages of the very books as they came out.
Some people just chose to delude themselves or live in blind hope that Maberry would deliver on his many promises to give T'Challa and Ororo their big moment.
We can now see that all of those promises were as empty as the threats of vengeance T'Challa mouths at his enemies just after they've killed thousands of Wakandan citizens.
Maberry played a lot of BP fans for fools.

Azzari and Kymera are two of the coolest alternate reality characters in the MU. Just because bad writing seperated T'challa and Storm doesn't mean the kids can't pop up. Azzari had the best traits or both T'challa and Storm and I hope next avengers get their own ongoing and marvel stops trying to pitch us that young avengers crap. How cool would it be to have Kymera living with Storm at the Jean Grey School and Azzari living with T'challa in Wakanda!
-
We can look forward to Azzari and Kymera being written well on one side while the other uses them as TROLL bait... You do the math on which sides will do this!
Azzari: "Hey!"
Kymera: "Hey!"
Azzari: "So uhm..."
Kymera: "Wait, before you go any further you need to know that we are related!"
Azzari: "You're my sister?"
Kymera: "Yes, and one of us will probably get TROLLED heavily real soon so be on the look out!"
T'challa: "I see you two have met!"
Ororo: "This is awkward!"
Azzari: "Are we all on speaking terms?"
Kymera: "Yeah, I mean something doesn't feel right about all of this!"
T'challa: "That depends on if the writer that is writing us favors Wakanda or the X-house!"
Ororo: "Oh don't start that again... Let it go!"
T'challa: "Stick around long enough and the true colors will show just saying... So if you want to be written well you may want to stand on this side of the tracks!"
Kymera: "Can I have a puppy?"
Azzari: "Yeah, can we?"
Shuri: "I mean really!!!"
Point Man: "STOP THE RANGE ROVER SIR... I think I see the African version of Bonanza over there!"
-
Flex, I agree about Kymera, but Azzari isn't troll bait. He's a future Avenger. God forbid T'challa have the same sort of things other characters have. Otherwise, he could be kidless and killed off in the future like Age of Apocalypse--where his head was on a pike and he had no heirs or like Marvel 2099, where the Panther line died out.
So to some fans who are aware of Panther lore like this, characters like Azzari are fine. I like Azzari, and I also like T'chaka from exiles. Again, Azzari mother was never officially mentioned only hinted. Nothing was trolling there. That's a excuse for writers doing silly and childish things. I like the Hudlin-Kids as well.
Hickman and Spencer may have responded to some request of fans who asked early on when he took over the Avengers, would we see them. He said maybe, and it looks like he actually did it.
Just to put this into perspective. Azzari was shown killing Immortus and also stomping Buck Cap (who is a bad ass). How is that trolling Flex?
-
On solo comic. I think it's still best to let Hickman organically finish his tale and spin the Panther title out of that. Right now Marvel is flooding the market. They have done some things that are controversial. My fear is that a title like the Panther's--no matter how good could possibly get buried by movie characters.
The thing that would be better (right now) is having T'challa show up and be more prominent as a guest star. Build him up for new fans, via books like the new Cap (with Sam). Have him show up in Thor's new book (hell, he can relate) and also work with Tony. If Marvel does this right, they can build back up--the lost momentum from Doomwar era.
IMO, Original Sin has been fine (still not over), So if Aaron doesn't slip back to AVX style--it's a good showing for T'challa in a Marvel event. Then it's Hickman final stretch and possibly showing up elsewhere. We should all ask Reminder if T'challa is going to show up at all.

Agreed with all of this.
T'challa REALLY needs to show up in Cap. Even to just meet with depowered old Cap or to meet with Falcon.
Although, with all the timeline stuff, I am not sure if Cap/T'challa are on good terms right now or not. Kinda hard keeping it all straight right now.

You are missing the point Seraphan... TROLLING is as easy as featuring a character like Azzari in an X-men book alongside Kymera for a family reunion of sorts!
As long as the character is out there and readily available he is always one Marvel summit meeting away from being included in extensive chump sessions no matter what he does elsewhere!
Marvel Summit Meeting...
X-writer: "I have a great idea... Let's bring the Black Panther back over here with his son Azzari and have them fight Ororo and her daughter Kymera!"
Kool-aid Sipping Editor: "You mean like a battle of the sexes... SWEEEEEEET let's do it!"
2 issues later...
Azzari: "Why is my own sister hitting me? Shouldn't we be teaming up to fight bad guys together as a family?"
Kymera: "I aint done with you punk get over here... X-men ride or die beyotch!"
T'challa: "This is just plain sad right here... We could be moving meta plots somewhere else right about now!"
Ororo: "Come here you piece of trash husband... I hate you!"
Zssssssst... Crackle... Biff... Bang... Slap...
-
Original sin #6 has Fury giving some props to T'Challa. Fury is starting to explain why he chose the people he did for the investigation into Uatu's murder and addresses the assemble group giving various reasons for their presence, but you are left to guess who his statements refer to. Then there is a panel where he is addressing T'Challa and Fury says, while looking T'Challa in the face, "some of you are without a doubt...the smartest, most capable people on the face of the earth." Separate panel looking directly at him.
I know most people are probably correct in assuming Bucky is the one who is going to replace Fury as intergalactic assassin/silent protector of the earth what with his new solo coming out. But wouldn't it be great if marvel was throwing a curve and it turned out to be T'Challa? Not T'Challa's usual mo and I know it won't happen but it does tickle my imagination.

I'm not missing the point. The point is that a writer can troll no matter what, if they really wanted to troll. They can write whatever. All they need is a pen and paper or the artist a pencil and his inks. That's it.
Azzari has been shown thus far to be nothing but a bad ass. His was born out of love for what Hudlin did and was featured in a freaking animated movie. I don't think you throw away a character like that. I'm pretty much keep Storm away from Panther, but Azzari is a exception.
Again, he straigt up merked Immortus and stomped out Bucky Cap. I'm trying to ascertain the trolling in that. For all we know, the Next Avengers are getting a book or something (the new Young Avengers?). He has potential and has no real ties to the X-office.

Regression and nostalgia
-
Seraphan: "...he has no real ties to the X-office."
AHEM... His mother is confirmed to be Storm!
Smoov-E...
Nostalgia???
Do you even know what that word means because you are oozing with it all day every time you post about characters older than 1966!
If Storm and the X-men want their kids back they will come and get them by force...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsJu4-McmF0
Azzari can accomplish whatever he wants and Wolverine will still be his step daddy by default!
Hickman is gone in 2015 and despite his ignoring most things outside of his books they still came and pulled T'challa into Original Sin because he like Azzari is owned by Marvel to do as they so please... This means that a year from now it is open season on all things Wakandan!
Brevoort says that they are not yet done with Black Panther and Storm and after all these years I believe him... NEXT!!! ;)
