I'm confused. Many posts here suggest the title is doing horribly and is in a slow descent to death. Others suggest it is one of Marvel's most successfully selling titles topping the chart for graphic novels.
Both can't br true. What's truth here? Is the title doing well or not?
The title isn't doing too well via floppies, but doing well elsewhere (digital, trades, etc). With the movie on the horizon, it won't be cancelled.
Marvel still uses the old system of pre-orders from LCS to determine if comics will continue. Currently BP is at mid 20,000s shipped to comic shops. If it drops below 20 it is in the cancellation zone. Regardless of how trades do unless Marvel changes its practices.
If that was the case, Moon Girl would've been cancelled months ago. She's did well via Scholastic, thus she continued. Breevort said that they take into account other mediums outside of LCS pre-orders.
BP Crew was cancelled because it did horribly both digitally and with floppies. Same with BP Wow, Mosaic, Nighthawk, etc.
Luke Cage will very likely suffer the same faith because its doing horribly in both mediums.

They want BP material to be out there. Just like they haven't pulled the trigger on Captain Marvel, even though her sales say they should.

I didn't mean to imply it would. I was just stating its in the zone of consideration.

The synopsis for one of the upcoming BP prose books
Black Panther: The Young Prince
Black Panther. Ruler of Wakanda. Avenger.
This is his destiny. But right now, he's simply T'Challa-the young prince.
Life is comfortable for twelve-year-old T'Challa in his home of Wakanda, an isolated, technologically advanced African nation. When he's not learning how to rule a kingdom from his father-the reigning Black Panther-or testing out the latest tech, he's off breaking rules with his best friend,M'Baku. But as conflict brews near Wakanda, T'Challa's father makes a startling announcement: he's sending T'Challa and M'Baku to school in America.
This is no prestigious private academy-they've been enrolled at South Side Middle School in the heart of Chicago. Despite being given a high-tech suit and a Vibranium ring to use only in case of an emergency, T'Challa realizes he might not be as equipped to handle life in America as he thought. Especially when it comes to navigating new friendships while hiding his true identity as the prince of a powerful nation, and avoiding Gemini Jones, a menacing classmate who is rumored to be involved in dark magic.
When strange things begin happening around school, T'Challa sets out to uncover the source. But what he discovers in the process is far more sinister than he could ever have imagined. In order to protect his friends and stop an ancient evil, T'Challa must take on the mantle of a hero, setting him on the path to becoming the Black Panther.
It's def is, no question. From there, its a matter of how well its doing elsewhere. If it's not making up via other mediums, said book gets the can.
Yeah it's on Amazon
Found it.

Cool. For a second I thought this was the synopsis for the BP Novel that is retelling Hudlins first arc. I was thinking they made some major changes. lol
Isn't that funny? Was there a time frame given to how long Tchalla was back in charge? No one man came on quickly after 6-7 real years of Shuri being in charge.
Of course there wasn't a time frame given or even well articulated reason for Wakanda to have fallen into such socio-political ruin post SW II.
Coates couldn't be bothered to do anything other than introduce rape camps and rampant misogyny into the BP mythos.

Like others have said it varies.
Some books get boosts via trades and other deal like a Moon Girl.
Squirrel Girl was New York Times best seller. She will FOREVER have a solo. Because that NYT seller title makes her an AUTOMATIC purchase for libraries. She has over 50 trades at my library. BP is just now catching up to her.
Some are made to get material out there like Captain (Becky can't sell books) Marvel.
And you will see MORE of it as more shows and movies are made.
And will eventually see book stop being floppies. Since we got so much cry babying going on over books.
Here is my truth.
The non Lcs sales show that Coates name carries more weight where people buy his non fiction.
It's a different fan base at your Barnes and Noble. More casual fans, who are in a more sales friendly environment.
The segment of fandom who enjoy non floppy reading enjoy his long form storytelling.
That's what the numbers tell me.
It also show what happens when folks get ACCESS beyond that comic book store.
The trade market is getting bigger (and may be/probably is bigger than the LCS market already) but the big 2 are so used to servicing the brick and mortar comics customers that they tend to not act on the trade sales data.
It's PASS big. Especially when you toss in used book stores. Where new books are there days after coming out because someone bought it and read it in one day and sold it used.
Again with this? You know the No one man Bullshit is.. Bullshit right? BP WoW confirmed that. They go on that No one man crap when they are the ones that started the crap because the chieftain was raping and banishing people, when they DM found out, instead of going through the proper channels and reporting it to the higher ups and the Royal Family, They decided (all on their own) that they were able to handle all of Wakanda's issues by themselves and didn't bother to report it, and they botched it spectacularly and then Aneka had the nerve to act high and mighty when she was imprisoned then fast forward to S1 of Bp, they are acting like the Government is the problem, ignoring they started it, and They are apart of that same government they are so criticizing. You like to use RL example, say a police lieutenant had someone come up to them and tell them about a huge drug trafficking ring, and a governor was behind it, no one spoke up until now because people who opposed him started disappearing, being shipped out of the country etc etc. This Lieutenant then tells his captain and everyone in the precinct, then the Captain decides Not to alert the FBI (despite it being on a federal level) and decide to handle it themselves, they also hear more of these issues happening through out the state, which are also out of their jurisdiction. They then start going out and making these busts, all in secret, while the original lieutenant goes to the governors house, alone, at night, without a warrant, enters his house and confronts him, tells him to surrender, he refuses, then he shoots him.. He cannot Blame the system when he bypassed all the channels, and decided to play vigilante.
The same thing applies to Aneka and the rest of the DM, they should of been punished for breaking the law, and ignoring proper channels. No excuses
I don't disagree that the MA didn't go through proper channels in handling the situation, or that they don't legally deserve punishment for the crimes they commited.
That said, they helped people who otherwise weren't being helped. They weren't the cause of the problem, but in some cases they ended up being the sollution. Stuff that needed to get done got done.
Was No One Man bullsit? In a lot of ways I would say it was, just as most political propoganda tends to be. But it helped give a voice to the voiceless and brought about change that even T'CHalla would argue was needed. So all's well that ends well.

If used books work like gamestop then Marvel might not like going by trade numbers. Once the initial purchase is made that book can get resold multiple times at a cheaper value without Marvel seeing a dime. Amazon has great deals on used trades with LCS and Marvel missing out on making a sale.
But Im not sure if that is how the used market works.

So what I'm getting from this (correct me if I'm wrong) is that Coate's Panther is a commercial success because of its non floppy sales? So why is everyone painting such a bleak picture when it comes to the state of BP???

Because there are people who want him off the book and poor sales increase the chances of that.
I'd also point out that the Direct Market is still the main comic book market. They're finding ways to made a middling book successful in other markets, but the market for floppies is what lets them underwrite everything else.
