Considering the herb is poisonous to anyone outside of the royal family (and Spider-Man) really that whole trial is essentially rigged. You could almost look at it as a clever way of eliminating potential challengers to the throne. Even if you win, you lose... just ask Killmonger.
A Mortal Kombat style fighting tournament plays out well in comics (and video game), but as a means of establishing government you can sort of argue it adds to that notion that Wakanda sort of books backward as far as their political structure goes. Granted it's the tradition of a warrior culture but still... you're establishing government with a fighting tournament.
Not knocking the tournament mind you... as I said it's just a comic book so it's all fun. I'm just playing devil's advocate as far as the notion of the advanced nation on the planet having somewhat of a backwards looking government.
It is backwards butnthatsbthe irony of it all. The nation with a older style leadership is the most advanced and prosperous nation on the planet and it is a monarch rule. And maybe Priest's version is the best as in King and BP are two separate things. But either way there needs to be something for Shuri, and I still think that having the next leader prove themselves is better. Especially because BP is the military leader and you want someone capable in command

Hey Majestik, I know we're doing the whole "I ignore you, you ignore me, we studiously say nothing to each other while in the same thread" deal, but I'm working on a codex for Shuri for my notes on Wakanda and I've hit an impasse on formulating her character and I figured I'd hit you up as the no.1 Shuri fan in-thread to see if you'd mind taking a look at it. It's around 1,150 words, so not that long a read. You up for that?

Btw, while I'm talking about all sorts of random shit that people don't really care about, I spent some time today thinking about how to organize a theoretical BP office and what titles could or couldn't be created (including mini-series only titles) over time. Put together a small list, figured I'd put it here for perusal:
To be meta about this, he's a super hero in a super hero comic.
King is just the cool job this particular super hero is given. It's a big part of who the character is .... but he's still first and foremost a super hero. Running Wakanda has always been secondary to telling a story of him punching out bad guys in a cat suit.
Does this description you've given apply to the likes of Black Bolt (when he was king of the Inhumans) and the late lamented Namor too?
Were they also superheroes ruling their respective kingdoms as an afterthought whilst punching out bad guys as well?
Do people really want to read about a democracy? Don't we have enough of all these broken systems destroying lives everyday in the so called 'free world'? I like reading about a king who has his country and peoples interest as a priority even if he doesn't always do the right thing.
A monarchy only seems backwards because it's in our worlds history and that time has moved on. There's no reason why it can't work and be exciting to read in a fictional world. Isn't part of the greatness of Priest's early run that T'Challa stands in the face of corrupt officials who deem themselves above him because of their political systems and prejudices? I don't want the same again but you remove all that potential by giving us the same damn thing that the rest of the world, real and fictional, have.
I don't know if that is what's going to happen in the new book but that's how I feel about that concept if it ever happens.
Solid post that I agree with 100%.

Shuri being the Queen and TChalla being the protector has been the case scenario for awhile. We use this definition of King and Queen as its supposed to mean Husband and Wife, but that should have no bearing on what the Wakandan definition of the term should mean.

Splitting the role of Black Panther and allowing Shuri to stay at home and run things while T'Challa is off playing superhero is certainly a nice solution as far as having things make more sense while at the time giving Shuri something to do. I wouldn't mind it if Coates went that route.

Both of them "co-ruling" would be fine by me. And it would allow T'Challa and/or Shuri to go out of Wakanda if needed. Especially since it appears fans want T'Challa to either be more super hero'ish or be more involved in other books / events.

Considering the fact we have multiple versions of certain characters like Captain America running around in the same ANAD MU, there's ZERo reson why Queen Shuri should be fridged or relegated to a lesser role because some feel threatened by her character being ruler of Wakanda while her brother cavorts with his western friends who usually leave him hanging out to dry when the chips are down.

This would be the most logical approach to take as regards fans of both characters.
Unfortunately, logic is rarely engaged in matters like this where the stewards of the BP mythos (post avX) have been concerned.

Shuri being queen of Wakanda while T'Challa being the chieftain of the BP tribencan work, have them both have co power and in times of emergency either one can assume the role of the other if need be. Essentially you can have it so both are of equal power, but they can both hold both titles if need be, but only temporary. They are both on equal terms. Shuri rules and protects the people and T'Challa protects them from foreign and domestic threat.

I'll say this: relegating her to strictly babysitter status won't help her character or the BP mythos at all. That would be a waste.

You'll get no arguments against this idea from me Brotha Ezyo1000.
Unfortunately, based on of what I've read of Coates plans for the BP mythos post Hickman, it seems obvious that he's fixated on having T'Challa as the sole ruler of Wakanda.

Ive mentioned it beforr but,
Sparta, an isolationist ish culture of warriors who had an FU attitude a lot had two kings...
Just bc leonidas went off to battle didnt mean there wasnt someone back jome to rule
It makes since for warriors where the king is also a general

The thing is, for the most part anyone that's not a super hero will be operating in a relegated role because essentially these are super hero stories. That's not to say she can't be used, but spotlight is usually reserved for the actual super heroes. Everyone else is essentially supporting cast.
I think the only way for Shuri's status to actually grow is for her to frankly get in a super hero book (ideally her own but the more likely bet is on a team book like A Force or Avengers or whatever). If Shuri's status as a character is going to go beyond where it is now, she frankly needs to start spending more time punching out bad guys like her brother. Sitting on a thrown at home won't get her anything she doesn't already have at this point.
