Could be a present day spaceship passes through an anomaly that takes the ship back through time and too far away to attempt to get home. Would account for having names that are legendary.
Stargate Universe has an episode similar to that.
I don't think that quite works. The back page specifically asks why an empire spanning five galaxies that recently fought the Shi'ar is unknown. Combined with those historical figures being present day figures makes me think this is the future.
Also, if there's time travel, it could explain how he can be in the Avengers - if T'Challa leaves and comes back at the same point in time.

I mean the original colonist travel back 2000 years. So Tchalla, M'baku, and Nakia are names they already know and become legendary as they tell stories to future generations. The recent war with the Shi'ar, could be how Tchalla finds out as they talk with Captain Marvel. Originally Aaron said this takes place in the present.

Coogler isn't doing Black Panther 2 without the chance to get his boy front and center yet again.
Thankfully Ryan Coogler opinion is the only one that matters and he's great friends with MBJ. If he wants him back he will be back. Most people loves him more then T'challa anyway.
Its hillarious when ppl think the writer/actor/director are bigger than the movie.
Marvel pays Coogler not the other way around.
Black Panther 2...and one....were gonna happen with or without "insert director/actor/writer"

It would be a bomb too. You can't insert anyone and get a great film with heart.

I enjoyed BP #1 more way more than I thought I would.
When was the last time BP had an artist this good on the book?

Though the BP book has had several good artists that I've liked, I'm honestly not sure it's gotten a legit A lister since JRJ at the start of Hudlins run.
But that's one of the perks of being elevated into an A list franchise. You start attracting some of the top artists on the book. And he compliments the story perfectly

Apparently, the story with Michael B. Jordan coming back and Childish Gambino having is false.

that's too bad. I bet that Gambino could reinvent Achebe is a satisfying way (speculation).

Agreed. I liked his death and felt it had a ton of emotion. Bringing him back to life would undermine that for me. The Ancestral Plane is good for him.
Also, I liked the today's issue. The art was nice and the story-line is interesting. I also look forward to seeing Emperor N'Jadaka as well.

Just my personal opinion I wouldn't mind it. But if he stays dead then that is okay too. Marvel needs it's good Villains to bit die lol

Deodato drew some of hickman and then original sin. Rocafort on ultimates.
But for a solo... yeah. Although Palo on SWaD is one of my fav styles. And i moved the style of Kingpin of Wakanda

I loved loved loved issue 1. beautiful art, action packed, and a king wanting to go home to his queen; his queen being the only thing he remembers that reminds him of home. who could ask for anything more?
So I just read Black Panther #1 Spoiler Free Thoughts:
Great issue! Good Balance of dialogue, and action! Very interested in where this story is going and what it could potentially set up for BP stories moving forward! My guess is Coates may not do a Season 4, so I hope who ever takes over after him is respectful of the world building and sense of continuity Coates has brought back to BP.
agreed thoroughly enjoyed this issue.
What do you guys think if T'Challa & co were to remain cosmic and fully leave Earth behind?
Is that an absolute "No" or would you be down with it?
no I dont mind him going to space from time to time but his home is wakanda.
Absolution no. Firstly I don't think it would make sense for them to abandon Wakanda. And secondly because making him a cosmic character essentially removes him from the main action and puts him in a niche setting.
Let csmc characters be cosmic characters. T'Challa should stay on earth. He can go into space from time to time. Avengers do that too.
agreed.
I don't see a point of re-introducing M'baku. 616 version is alive, can easiily become like the MCU if they want (just need a redemption story). No reason to make it convoluted.
Nakia I can see. But then... it would just put Coates at odds with himself since he loves Storm. There is no reason to bring back a different Nakia unless you are going the MCU Queen Nakia route.
I'm hoping that tchalla doesn't fall in love with this nakia. that is my only concern thus far.
-
Definitely looking forward to seeing T’challa’s interactions with Nakia. Especially since this version isn’t the psycho stalker.

If you're extending it beyond the BP solo book, then he had some nice artists during Hickmans New Avengers.

Bro McGregor shared my post!

Don McGregor has a twitter?!?!?!!?

As for this issue the art was great. And Coates can actually write a protagonist who kicks but.
I'm not sure Coates ever liked the original concept of Black Panther or Wakanda, from what I've read of his articles and his prior comics that seems to be the case. I feel like he grew up reading X-men and he'd probably be more comfortable writing X-men, Spidey or even Captain America (to the chagrin of some fans).
In a vacuum this was a very solid issue, but holy cow way to flip the concept of Wakanda on its head.
Edit-
He really isn't a fan of championing monarchies, empires, kingdoms or nobility. I understand that especially when you're applying real world rationale and analogies to it, but his narratives don't jive with the prior canon to me. This feels more like the story he wanted to write. An underdog story, because everyone loves an underdog story.

Okay I read the Issue.. better then I was expecting to be honest but it's still pretty generic in the sense that, you could tell me the entire cast with a different franchise and nothing would Change. It would cool seeing T'Challa kick ass and have that silent but deadly attitude.
Not so fond of the slave trade of course. And it's a disappointment that we got this whole shtick and more Wakandans are bad. But the art is gorgeous. The action is on point and I like the looks of Nakia and M'Baku. Especially M'Baku. And the armor the maroons Wear would look cool as the hatute zeraze new look.
I'll give it a Solid 6.5/10
Had this not been throwing Wakanda under the bus Again, I would rank it higher. As Said previously, of this was an image comic, I would like it Alot more. And would rank it at a 7.5-8/10, but being it's using Wakandas name.. nah

I know it can't happen but I would love it if there was another book based on Wakanda fully in space. I mainly read cosmic books anyway this would just make me even more happy.
Now i wonder how i would have felt about Coates if this was the first arc after of SW.

Coogler clearly had a lot of freedom with this movie. He literally handpicked the main cast. Letitia was the only one who had to audition fot her role.
-
I know this is a joke, but i'll bite. Brian Stelfreeze.
Stelfreeze makes pretty art, but it's also fairly stiff. I don't think Coates was good at writing action (until the recent silent issue, I still would have argued that), but I don't think Stelfreeze helped.

It honestly reminded me a lot of the Kasper Cole issues of Black Panther - something completely different and you had to ask yourself what made a Black Panther comic.

Really only name dropping Vibranium.
BoG basically said it... this is just a generic slave revolt type comic with BP mytho names thrown in without context. Like dropping in the middle of the John Carter movie.
The end page with the editor talking seemingly confirms that that is 616T'challa at least.

It reminds me a little of BP man without fear. The character is in a different status quo, and stripped away of a lot of his supporting cast and trademark elememts. I know back in the day people capped on the premise, but it ended up being my personal fave BP run since Priest.
I think on moderation this sort of thing can be fun. But we'll see how it works out.
-
I thought this issue wasn't too bad, why didn't they just make this issue one in the first place?
Secret Wars ended with T'challa sending three adventurers out into space.
Due to time compression they could have ended up inadvertently starting this galactic empire and then we just pick up with T'challa for some reason in space. That would have been so much better than two years of BS.

Somewhat the same. But at least Hell's Kitchen is known, he knew his own name, his own history, ect. This is like a really extreme version of that.

Yupppppppppppp
Hell, you can even have T'challa "wake up" from the reality gem manipulation by going, "where am I?"
You would get a double mystery... where is T'challa and then T'challa's internal mystery of "did I fix Wakanda?"
Also would have allowed Coates to have a year working on his comic writing ability without having to worry too much about continuity and such

Netflix shows always look cheap and low budget, I would not want to see their Wakanda.

Based on how ABC handled Inhumans I would not want them to do a Wakanda show; it would also look cheap on ABC.

Coates said he didn't even know the ending of Secret Wars when he first wrote his script, so I don't think he necessarily would have thought to go this direction right out of the gate. It's possible had he known Hickmans ending he might have gone in this direction earlier.
THat aside, I think there was some logistical house cleaning he probably wanted to do first before doing a story which completely seperates T'Challa from his established status quo. Probably wanted to bring Shuri back (again he did't know Hickmans ending when he started writing the first season), probably wanted to re-build his supporting cast. And obviously he wanted to reunite T'Challa with Storm, who seemingly is playing a role in this story even though she's not physically present. She's his emotional anchor, or however you want to look at it.
Either way, I think the timing is descent as far as acting as a new jumping on point for people who may want to check it out after seeing the BP movie or Infinity War. No pre-existing knowledge is really necessary for this story, since it's starting off as sort of a blank slate. It's confusing, but it's confusing by design because it's a mystery.

Which he ignored the continuity anyways and just changed or added stuff without reason other than to make his first season appear "dramatic" if he started out with this as the first story, at the very least the threat is established and Tchalla wouldn't of had to been nerfed to high hell to make it seem there where stakes

E3 is coming soon. June 11th and Square Enix's Avengers game is gonna be there. There's a good chance Black panther will be in the game. What's some things you'd like to see done with him? Like how he plays, the design of the suit or abilities?
