I'm done trusting DC with Cyborg. I waited 7 years and I'm done.
Cyborg can't go 4 months without getting mutilated or ripped to shreds
The funny thing is, Cap was getting treated worse his first two movies than T'Challa. At time of release, The First Avenger was considered among the worst of the movies. No one even cared for Steve Rogers other than that grenade scene. Which T'Challa had a similar scene in his first outing in Civil War and stole the spotlight from both Tony and Cap in Cap's own movie.

I have to disagree here. The late Roger Ebert, who IMO is one of the few reviewers who did know a bit about comics gave the First Avenger a very positive review.
It was a pleasure to realize, once "Captain America: The First Avenger" got under way, that hey, here is a real movie, not a noisy assembly of incomprehensible special effects. Of course it's loaded with CGI. It goes without saying it's preposterous. But it has the texture and takes the care to be a full-blown film. You know, like with a hero we care about and who has some dimension. And with weight to the story. As we plunge ahead into a limitless future of comic-book movies, let this be an inspiration rather than "Thor" or "Green Lantern."
Cap has been treated well in every film he's been in. Trying to discredit this to make T'Challa feel less like a chump and loser won't work. It is what it is. Cap was universally loved since his first movie. Can't say the same for T'Challa.

??? This is BP's first movie and it's a massive hit.

Lol T'Challa wasn't a chum. You just mad they didn't make him a scientist. Cap didn't even outright beat a single villain in his movies either. All the villains either gave up fighting or disappeared, or had to be dealt with by BP himself.
Half of his movie he sits there worried about Bucky lol.
Cap runs away from his problem, T'Challa faced them head on.

I'm talking about the characters. Not the movies.

Maybe chump is the wrong word. How about "T'Challa feels like a cardboard cutout" instead? Even in Cap 1, Steve always had lines that gave you a look at his personality and get behind him. T'Challa is the least compelling character in his own movie. Him not being a scientist isn't the most damning thing about his character but him being a scientist would have added a dimension to it.

Then what is? How do you suggest they handle the character going forward?
I've seen these thoughts echoed across the internet. I dunno what people want(ed) from the character. Ruthlessness? Comedy and Snark? They made Thor into a comedian in Ragnarok and everybody suddenly loves him, maybe they should do the same for T'Challa.

The character's doing just fine. For the films anyway.

I think you're over estimating people's supposed disdain for T'Challa in this movie.

And acting like your opinion is shared by the majority when tangible evidence points to the contrary won't work either. "Universally loved" by what metric, and what metric do you have to prove the opposite is true for T'Challa besides how YOU feel about the character?
So there's no semantics games going on, I don't mean by the majority HERE at CBR I mean overall. The movie has been #1 for five weeks straight and if the majority movie going audience felt like you like you imply that would be impossible. If he's cardboard and his supporting cast/villain carries him that would only go so far and not into 5 weeks and running territory.

"I dislike a thing, therefore EVERYONE dislikes the same thing I dislike!" I haven't seen that since the early 2000s.

Everything about the movie was a success. Each character was handled very well and they all had their moments.
T'Challa is a compelling character in the movie and I enjoyed his portrayal very much.

The most damning thing about his character is that he has none. He was, for all intent and purposes, a plot device. He spends the majority of his screentime listening to compelling lines from his supporting cast and watching them outshine him.
The only dimension T'Challa has to his character is that he wanted to continue were his father left off. There's nothing else there. He was burdened to carry weak ideals (that killmonger, a character with compelling ideals, would later blow away like a house of cards) for the majority of the movie. Even then the lines he was given to say were so mundane that the audience is never given a chance to glimpse at his character beyond upholding his father's legacy. Who would root for this character?
His actions are also one dimensional. He's written to be so passive it feels like every action he takes were the result of things outside of him and he merely reacts to them.
T'Challa isn't a comedian and like all characters that don't rely on comedy, he needed to make proactive actions based on compelling ideals conveyed through great dialogue. Even little things like him enjoying a pizza would have been an improvement. Some levity wouldn't have hurt (like in hudlin run).
Just an all around poorly written character. Reactive protagonists have their purposes as viewer surrogates. (I've never read Don Mcgregor's T'Challa, who MCU T'Challa has been compared to) T'Challa has never been that. I actually think it's against his character.
It's no wonder you've seen these "least interesting" comments floating around the Internet. It's because it's true and it's a damn shame.
