Black Panther Vol. 1 #15 - Revenge of the Black Panther!

First off, this issue has an incredibly generic title. We pick up with T'Challa and Cap fighting more sound creatures. Specifically an elephant with claw hands since, if you're making a creature made of sound, you might as well make a few upgrades. They're not having much luck. Cap thinks his shield is useless against the creature. T'Challa disagrees. He thinks the shield is barely having an effect, which is way better than anything else. Specifically, there is a metal in the shield that possesses the same properties as Vibranium (cue nerd moment). He picks Cap's shield up on a rebound and throws it, destroying the creature.
Meanwhile, Beast and Vision are having trouble getting Klaw on a ship to Wakanda. It seems the dock workers are a little uncomfortable smuggling a human out of the country without any documentation. Suddenly, they are attacked by more sound creatures. Luckily, Vision kicks ass while Beast quips. Unfortunately, they aren't quick enough to stop the Thunderbolts from reviving Klaw. They specifically state that Klaw had been losing strength over the years and was now restored to his original strength (with a footnote citing his FF issues). It seems like they're saying "yeah, he wasn't all that impressive recently, but remember when he was?" I kind of wonder if they would be willing to make Klaw a sound creature in Black Panther 2 and bring Andy Serkis back for mo cap. I bet they could make him really cool. I always pictured his voice having a sort of reverb effect mixed with his accent.
Luckily, a pair of Wakandans arrive with vibranium gloves. A cool fight scene follows. Eventually, T'Challa wins and Klaw's fate is a mystery. The issue ends with Monica Lynne and Kevin Trublood arriving at the consulate. The person who opens the door has been expecting them, but T'Challa knows nothing of their visit. Then we see Windeagle land as well ready to kill the Black Panther. To be continued in Marvel Premiere.
This was a solid issue. I skipped over a description of the action because it's tedious to explain it, but it was probably the highlight of the story. In particular, the final fight with Klaw gets very intense when it goes under water. My only real complaint there is Ed Hannigan overwrote the art with way too many thought balloons. Sometimes, the art and the action can just speak for itself. I guess the book wasn't selling well, since it ends here, but they already know the story is continuing, which is a bit weird. That being said, there's a transition here, moving from Black Panther fighting Klaw to returning to and finishing McGregor's Ku Klux Klan story. I do want to transition there and see how it'll finish, even if I remembered not liking where it goes.
I actually really like this short story.
Nothing deep or special but it stands on its own, nice use of Klaw, cool fight, actually shows Klaw as a threat (beating up vision).
Solid, nice work. best story of vol 1 by far.
Not sure if I will read the ending of KKK with you since I haen't read the original story in so long I probably wont' understand it. I remember mcgregors KKK to be one fo hte worst stories of all time however.
If you are looking for other old stories to read, in addition to vol 2 (the most underrated story of all time) and IM annual and Cable:
- tales of suspense/cap 100
- numerous DD guest apperances like DD 52
- defenders 84 (kiber island incident)
- avengers 126
- avengers 62 (mbaku origin)
but doesn't that stop when T'Challa became king. If he has any children they would be princes or princesses. Shuri's got to have another title now I think. Her sibling is king now and she is on the secondary line of succession unless she challenges for the crown or T'Challa dies and has no heirs.
If they made her a princess again, she would remain one even when Tchalla has children. I would make her Lord of something. Maybe the lands the Mound sit in or something.

Shuri is chief Mage of Wakanda now.
According to Coates anyway.

Heh. Coates is giving her feats though.
More than the king.

I thought Wakanda didn't do magic. Shows what I know I guess.
Man, fuck that. Zuvwari or however the hell you spell his name is clearly the Chief Mage in Wakanda.

Magic has always been around. Resurrection altar is clearly magic ish for instance.
T'challa has just basically rejected it to focus on tech only. It was a key point during Doom War actually

Whoa i thought that Shadow Physics was tech and magic combined.
Zawari is the dark magic that T'Challa rarely turns to unless the situation is desperate. Shuri is that shiny new magic. and she's pulling isht out of thin air.
She's not even using chants or spells just straight doing.
Coates has her in a corner though. Unless he continues to do these mystical stories, there's not much use for her, especially if Zawari is viewed as the Wakandan Sorcerer Supreme.
Kinda leaves her in the cold.
Whoa i thought that Shadow Physics was tech and magic combined.
It is.
But writers don't reference Shadow Physics anymore. Would have been great to use for the first arc.

The origins can be found in Hudlin's 2nd relaunch of BP where Shuri becomes Black Panther. It begins to appear at the end of the run and picks up in Doom War. This is where it gets the most use.
There were some interesting concepts that never were built upon enough to make it viable.
