I see a lot of "synergy" between films/tv shows and comics now a days though? I think you're right that movies don't make people wanna read the adapted source.
All the movies ultimately do, as far as the comics are concerned, is getting projects launched. Everything after that varies.

I don't think there's a direct coorelation between movies and comics, in that I don't think comic sales spike immediately from movie goers rushing to the lcb to read up on the character after seeing the movie.
But I do think there's more of a slow play at work there. The Super Friends cartoon literally made DC's big 7 into household names. My mother has never picked up a comic book in her life, and she knows who Aquaman is. Things like movies and TV shows can have a trickle effect on toys and comics. It's building an awareness into pop culture that in the long run ideally will translate into a profitable franchise.

Marvel must have some data that points out that movies affect trades to some extent.
They clearly synergize projects around movies that produce multiple trades of the title characters.
BP being announced in CW caused the priest collections to be made. "Who is the BLack Panther" and Hudlin Civil War arc started showing up in Bookamillion.
But... there is no way for "fans" to monitor this stuff. It isn't gong to show up in diamond charts. But marvel consistently does the same thing. Its not a coincidense Gamora,Rocket and co are getting solos again a few months before the movie comes out. or Defenders happening soon before Netflix.

The trades def do benefit. I can see a lot of folks who saw Civil War theaters going to Amazon, comixology, etc in order to get a trade (or trades) of a certain story arc, or even an entire run. Hence Marvel collecting the Priest run or pushing "Who is the Black Panther" for example. The general audience is probably much more receptive to trades than monthlies.
When it comes to the monthlies, however, the movie effect may not be as strong as we may think. Of all the characters that showed up in the MCU in the past two years, only Iron-Man and Black Panther had very high numbers. Everyone else either had respectable numbers (Steve Rodgers, Doctor Strange, GOTG), somewhat low numbers (Sam Wilson), or numbers that entered "cancellation" territory (Ant-Man, Vision, Black Widow).
Projects will get launched because of the movies, hence Gamora, Rocket, Hawkeye, and so on. Possibly with the intention of those books to eventually become trades and continue selling. But as far as sales on a month-to-month basis, it honestly doesn't guarantee anything.
-
Trades do better because they're typically self contained story arcs, monthlies are probably a tougher sell for new fans coming in the middle of an arc and being confused. I expect the rest of Priest run to be collected along with some reprint of classic avengers stories featuring Klaw

I wonder if its slightly different for Panther because it is literally the first push he ever got lol.
First time merch was available by the truck load (in comparision to before).
Everyone knows who cap, im, hulk, spidey, ect are. Suddenly putting them everywhere isn't really any different than before.
More similar to GoG than say Cap in that instance. GoG was a dead franchise that the movies essentially saved.

It could be. But, from my understanding, Ant-Man and Black Widow didn't get a push until very recently too. Both appeared in multiple MCU films with one having his own solo (Ant-Man) and the other being well-featured in several MCU franchises by a very famous actress (Black Widow), yet neither of them managed to sell anything close to Iron-Man or BP's numbers on a monthly basis. Both of their numbers ended up in the very low 20ks or below.
Honestly, BP selling as high as he did still doesn't make sense to me to this day. I expected him to do at most Cap's numbers and most likely Daredevil number. Never saw the 250K sales coming and definitely did not expect the numbers to stay as high as they did for as long as they did, due to the many issues the start of this run has.

I imagine that was just the culmination of a perfect storm of things, which would be very very difficult to replicate a second time and likely impossible to sustain. The buzz from Coates plus the buzz from Coogler plus the post Civil War buzz probably all snowballed together at just the right time to create something greater than the sum of it's part.
I'm honestly skeptical if they could replicate anything close to that even when the actual BP movie comes out (though I'm hopeful marvel proves me wrong).

I mean this in the nicest way but...
Scott and Widow ain't unique like Panther.
Being black alone was a boon for once. He is... different.

Those of us who visit LCS regularly forget how much of a pain in the butt going to an LCS is if its not in your way.
Assuming you have one near you or even know where the nearest one to you is.
A movie isn't going to get Joe Average into a comic shop.
Sometimes I think that it would be cool if places like Gamestop sold comics, because people already go there(and there are peeps who go
there that will never set foot into a LCS).
But the Gamestops are going to go the way of Blockbuster if the Gaming Industry has any say about it.

+ 5 years of being in an Avengers book, which is likley the most important thing for monthly issues.

Yeah, used video games are frankly the only reason Gamestop still exists at the moment.
As far as entertainment goes (video games, comics, print media in general) the option of downloading something to your computer is pretty much making the physical medium extinct. Comics will stubbornly hang around for a long long time, but it's always going to be dying a slow slow death.

It isn't a coincidence that marvel removed digital codes
or pimps out Marvel Unlimited all over the place
or DC is now offering digital codes with there 3.99 books... or you can get just digital for 2.99!!
the niche is going to get nichier lol. I think there will ALWAYS be a market for print (barnes and BAM are still poppin where I live) but yeah... the squeezer is getting tighter and tighter.
