Black Panther Vol. 1 #6 - A Cup of Youth

Apparently spellcheck hasn't been catching Samurai when I write it with two M's? That's disappointing. Speaking of disappointing... Actually, that was a bit of a cheap shot.
The story starts off with a pretty good caption: "It was the deadliest drink on Earth! And only those with a thirst to live forever were willing to seek out the ancient Samurai... Defy their weapons... And dare to claim - A cup of youth." T'Challa pleads with the Ronin to stop attacking him to no avail. When Mr. Little chimes in to suggest that the Samurai code forbids killing an unarmed opponent, the Ronin takes time to respond to him, which distracts him for T'Challa to cold-cock him and knock him out.
Mr. Little immediately wants to collect the guy's sword and T'Challa is full of criticism for him. Glad to see T'Challa is no longer unquestioningly calling this dude his friend. During their little squabble, the Ronin wakes up and tells T'Challa his customs require T'Challa to kill him. T'Challa says his customs require him to spare him. They decide the compromise is to ask the ruler of this land to make a decision on what to do.
The Ronin opens the gate to his land with a laser beam. He tells T'Challa that they haven't been isolated all these years, but kept up with outside technology. T'Challa is amazed that a land is able to keep its traditions intact in a modern world. I'm not entirely sure whether Kirby is referencing Wakanda here or completely missing the parallel. It's certainly a subtle reference if it is one. This was a big theme of Panther's Rage, which he probably didn't read, but it's also not missing from the original FF stories. Anyway, the solution for the Ronin is for T'Challa to have another fight. Luckily, this fight provides for a distraction so Mr. Little can sneak away to get the waters. Unfortunately, this unsanctioned thievery pleases no one and T'Challa is possibly more pissed off than the Samurai to see this. A chase breaks out and we reach another cliffhanger.
Meanwhile, the story also has a side plot in Wakanda, where a coup is taking place. With T'Challa away, N'Gassi is in charge. The guy's got a cool look that reminds me a lot of the Hudlin/Romita Jr. redesigns of characters with a big white beard that encircles his head. Anyway, N'Gassi wonders who would lead this cult and in walks General Jakarra. He's the half-brother of T'Challa and always in his shadow. I'm sure we'll see more of him next issue.
I joked about this one being disappointing, but I don't think it was. I think it's stronger than it's been in awhile. It helps that we're seeing a bit of Wakanda. I also like T'Challa here. He comes off as more noble and, frankly, an actual character, rather than someone in the background reacting to things who sometimes fights. It's good just seeing him show his skills at diplomacy as well as combat in trying to reach the conclusion. That being said, it feels like Kirby wants to wrap this story up as well because it looks like it'll be resolved next issue.

Honestly I just really like the covers from Kirby's run.
I also liked the sci-fi aspects as well.
Keep it up Mike_Murdock

I really, really wish they'd green light a sequel. I want to see a secret team up that teams up Azzari with the All Winners Squad after the "Death" of Steve Rogers.

just finished the 3rd book of the priest tpb series. overall, i enjoyed priest take on t'challa a lot. the way the panther is so confident and regal is really appealing throughout all the stories. i am guessing that at the end of the book, where you see the throne with the panther's garb on it, is when he stops being panther for a while and another person takes up the mantle for a while? not sure i want to read that just now.
i was a little disappointed that the tpb was missing some comics in the 50's run. i wish they would of just put each and every comic in the tbp so it would have been more of a complete collection. i have decided to go with hudlin's tpb series next, after reading some of the reviews on here.
i also dug through the old comic book collection last night and was pleased to find a very, very good copy of ff#53 /don't know why i didn't get #52?/, and also the complete jungle action issues with t'challa in them, along with the jack kirby black panther number 1, and the issues #13-#15. i am not sure why i didn't buy issues 2-12 /more than likely it was because if kirby's art/, i was not a big kirby art fan when i was younger.
i will be reading all the jungle action today and tomorrow as i await amazon to ship me the hudlin series. i still remember as a kid that the covers to issues #14 and #15 were some of my favorite covers of t'challa as a young boy.
lastly, thank you all for posting here so much. it is really enjoyable to see all you fans so passionate about the greatest king in comics!

Yes, a character named Kasper takes over. I would say give it a try. I liked it.

I don't think it is available on Barnes & Noble until 26th June but it is highly rated on the pre order list:

CA: Civil War would seem a logical co-feature.

If they wanted to inflate the movie box office more, they probably should have waited to release it on Blu Ray. Once you own a copy you're obviously less likely to see it in theaters.
