avery brooks from ds9? lol
i know the comic characters are not real people, but as an artist i would try to model my character's facial features based on the heroes original appearance /ff 52-53/. i may give him different hair cuts, more modern clothes, or a modern rendition, but it would still be of the original. peter parker may not look like the ditko drawn peter, but by his 50th or so appearance, his look has continued to look mostly the same. t'challa look very much like t'challa in the old ff and later in the avengers for many years and in jungle action. now it seems like any artist can make him look like who ever they want him to look like. it may be trivial, but it bothers my old eyes looking at a character i don't recognize lol.
last thing; i also watched avengers movie yesterday, and i agree it was not as good as bp was. i was a little pissed that t'challa got wiped out with many others and the only avengers still around are basically the ones from the 1st movie. hopefully we see more of him in the 2nd movie.
i just received the 3 t'challa christopher p. books that were recommended to me on this thread and i wish to say thank you again. i have read the first two arcs and just finished enemy of the state. the stories are enjoyable, although a little confusing at first with the story being told by the young agent guy /does that continue through all the whole run?/
i tried to look back a couple of pages to thank the exact person that recommended the books to me but i could not find the post, there sure are a slew of posts on this thread. i am surprised t'challa does not have his own special thread area like spiderman and the xmen books. he certainly garners enough traffic to have his own special link.
my only complaint, about the run is the artists rendition of t'challa. i wish his facial features were more consistent between the artists over the years. several artist have drawn peter parker over the years and he normally looks the same, with t'challa, he has looked different in the few recent books i have read. do artists have trouble remembering what he looked like, or are most of these artist white and have trouble distinguishing facial features of black heroes?
one quick question, was the character who was t'challa's step mom around in stories previously before this run, or was she and others new characters created by christopher p.?
Hi Mantis Dad, I'm glad you've taken an interest in the BP Mythos and I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey moving forward.
I'd like to recommend the BP run written by Reginald Hudlin.
The first volume was called "Who Is The Black Panther."
It was originally designed as an out of continuity 6 issue mini series but was so well received by readers that Marvel decided to turn into an ongoing, in continuity monthly book that went onto being a solidly succesful run long before Coates came on the scene.
David Liss is also another BP scribe he delivered a solidly entertaining and well thought out run which I have no doubt you'll enjoy immensely. :)
I look at it this way. The Black Panther movie is, at its heart, a James Bond film. And nobody believes Bond is less competent because Q makes his gadgets.
(I also try to treat the movies as their own thing. Trying to make them line up with the comics just causes headaches. :) )
I don’t think anybody views Bond as a tech genius though. And T’Challa is supposed to be that. One of the eight smartest in the Marvel Universe.
It reminded me of Lucious Fox supplying Batman his gear in the Nolan Batman films. It made enough sense, so I didn't mind.
I actually like it when a supporting cast actually is functional, rather than just being a bunch of Jimmy Olesons or whatever.
It actually also bothered me quite a bit that in the Nolan movies, he was so reliant on Lucius and they sidelined Bruce’s intelligence.

1. Ross narrates throughout. Priest has even described it as a "Ross book" at some point. He uses Ross for a few reasons, one of them so that their is a aura of mystery around T'challa. Some people like the decision, some people can't get past it.
2. BP doesn't really have the spin offs that the Xmen and Spider-Man have. Those franchises routinely have 5+ ongoings at the same time. BP only really has one, with some failed minis here and there. Traditionally, it was never really guaranteed he would have a solo at all.
3. PRiest didn't get the best artists because T'challa wasn't a A or B tier level hero back then.

Regarding T'Challa's features:
Priest was the first to give him the "bald w/ goatee look", but for the first year of the title, he had a bunch of new artists. Once Sal Velluto took over duties with issue #13, things were much more consistent.
After Priest's run ended, however, he was soon back to the "generic black hero haircut", which is much more difficult to make distinctive.
I don’t think anybody views Bond as a tech genius though. And T’Challa is supposed to be that. One of the eight smartest in the Marvel Universe.
No, he's "supposed to be" one of the eight smartest in the Marvel COMICS. As I said in the very post you replied to, the movies are their own thing. If you want them to be perfect adaptations of whichever run you like the best, you WILL be disappointed, no matter how good the movies actually are. And that's not only unfair to the movie-makers, but unpleasant for you.

Yeah, from Panther's Quest (the Marvel Comics Presents story I reviewed back in January and February). However, I believe Priest is the first one to make her his step-mom not his actual mom.

Around the same time, Jack Kirby had returned to Marvel with a contract to do four books a month. In the first issue, Kirby promised a new Black Panther, adding "I can only say that you’re due to see the Panther the way he was originally meant to be."
Weird he would say that. This didn't feel like F4 T'challa to me. Too reactionary, surprised by too much.

Black Panther Vol. 1 #1 - King Solomon's Frog

The opening is fairly dramatic. It starts in the middle of the story with nothing but a little tease telling us of the importance of King Solomon's Frog. T'Challa is already on the hunt to find the artifact with a companion by the unfortunate name of "Mr. Little." Suddenly, they are attacked my a swordsman. Luckily, the swordsman is a fish out of water and literally a man out of time and is more afraid of T'Challa than T'Challa is afraid of him. He runs off and the pair leave with the frog.
In the air, Mr. Little and T'Challa are pursued by other collectors. Eventually, they are confronted by Princess Zanda, who kills Mr. Little. T'Challa fights free and, in the confusion, the Frog starts to glow and a weird alien creature with "Hatch 22" appears on his head.
I noticed the Black Panther is still very serious. He talks, but his statements are very matter of fact - usually describing the action that's occurring. However, he does talk a lot and seems to be quite loud in doing it. Mr. Little is not a very likeable character, imo. Princess Zanda says that he would have betrayed and killed T'Challa as well. Either way, he comes off as a heartless dick. He does, however, have most of the agency in the story while T'Challa moves around reacting to everything in a confused manner.
Still, there are some fun moments. There's a nice Indiana Jones-esque sense of adventure that can be fun - particularly with the idea of myths coming from the previous reality of the story (the idea that the Genie was an ancient creature and ended up massacring people, but the story was censored is a fun one). I'll also say that the alien-looking dude at the end looks really, really cool. Next issue might be fun just to see more of him.
I agree about Mr. Little. He was so unlikable that it made me wonder why Azzari would ever be around him. And was this the first mention of Azzari?
Also I found the decision to use Little's tech instead of T'challas/Wakandas odd, sense kirby focused on Wakanda's tech so mcuh in the F4 story.
T'challa had some nice action and movements. Art was pretty.
Feel like it needed an issue #0 because this story is so weird compared to everything that came before it (F4 and McGregor stuff)
-
Ah. That would be your opinion. Not fact.
Haven't seen solo... but I personally think IW, DP2 and BP are all pretty awesome films.
Regardless of which outperforms which, I'm just glad we're getting a lot of really cool comic films. The bar has really been raised since the MCU started.
Weird he would say that. This didn't feel like F4 T'challa to me. Too reactionary, surprised by too much.
Honestly, I think it's because he just wanted to tell this sci-fi/fantasy story while Marvel wanted him to use the Black Panther (probably because they were firing McGregor and needed someone to keep the character in print). With the exception of mentioning Azzari (I suspect for the first time), I don't think there's any interest in any Black Panther world building here. It's all about the Collectors and the mythical items they track down.

If you're still taking suggestions, Jason Aarons had a short BP run that was a tie in to the Secret Invasion event. It was called See Wakanda and Die.
Though Priests had my favorite BP run as a whole, I think Aarons See Wakanda and Die is probably my single favorite BP story.

I should mention, based on comments you made, that there are actually FOUR Priest volumes, but the 4th volume is primarily about a different person as Panther.
And I second the SWaD recommendation. A very nice self-contained story.
was that really a thing?
Yes.
We got folks who are very SALTY about how well BP did.
So it's not a shock when you hear stuff like that.
I wouldn't be shocked if folks bought tickets and didn't go just to try to get that movie (among others) higher than Panther.
If Deadpool did better here than Panther-I can see that happening. A film like Solo-where you saw more ads for Gambino and a lot of folks still TICKED about Finn-who seems to be the only guy whose footage keeps getting cut & he's being left out of the comics unlike the other two. No I expect backlash.

[B] T'Challa is a genius though, he created his own microweave m it's just that Shuri is head of the Wakanda design group. Obviously he doesn't have the time to hang out in a lab all day and tinker. Black Panther Vol. 1 #2 - The Six-Million Year Man

I was hoping to discover that this title predates the Six Million Dollar Man, but, sadly, it does not. The story opens with a note that comic book fans are tame compared to the insatiable collectors - and we haven't even hit the 1990s yet! This is a very Jack Kirby opening with single splash followed by double splash. The two-page splash is partiuclarly dynamic with everyone thrown around in confusion while the creature just stands there like a statue. The creature has telepathic powers and "magnetic" powers, so T'Challa saves the day by blanking his mind of thoughts, getting close, and sucker punching the thing. Princess Zanda wants to kill it, but T'Challa concludes they need to find the other frog to return it to the future. T'Challa quickly realizes that Mr. Little is not dead after all and suggests that everyone has to team up.
We're treated to an impressive amount of Kirby Crackle and a vision of the future of mankind. Then the creature seems to waken again, so Mr. Little shoots him with a chemical that knocks him out for 24 hours. Then they all go on a rocket ship and their journey is to be continued.
Jack Kirby is not known for enjoying to revisit his past work and this is no exception. The story is fantastical and imaginative. What it is not is a Black Panther story. Although T'Challa is allowed a moment to save the day, Mr. Little seems to be the hero of the story. It also feels a bit thin and rushed and might be better to keep reading the next issue. Still, if the audience of the time had to wait a month (or two), I can wait another day.

This was a rough read for me. Like i'd read a page and go do something else and come back.
It isn't a BP story at all. It is Kirby drawing with Panther thrown in just because.
I guess the mind clearing thing is kinda a feat?
My biggest problem is that neither Little or Zanda are likeable and i don't know why T'challa is hanging otu with them other than a sentence about Azzuri. And he is "friends" with Little? Eh...

Don McGregor, essentially. Although Priest referenced it with "Happy Pants Panther" during his run. I don't believe Hudlin ever did.
(Theoretically, Coates' "soul stalking" ability might also be related. he's never said.)
