True. Still better than an axe. :)
(And I think I prefer it to the more generic-looking shields and energy blasts we tend to get with movie sorcery these days)

Looks like Dr. Strange is going to make 80 million this weekend.
The "success bar" just got raised for Black Panther. I dont think anything under 70 million will be a good look for it at this point

Hopefully they market the film just as hard as they did Strange. I just wonder how its gonna fare in China since everything they do now is with that country in mind.

I actually felt like the marketing for Dr Strange was a bit underwhelming considering what the actual film turned out to be
Nothing actually hit me as something I had to see in theatres except for the Marvel brand
Thats why Marvel and Cooler need to go all out for the first movie and that the visuals should be top notch and action should be outstanding. Show these fools what BP and Wakanda are made of lol
As for China, well they like robotic things hence why pacific rim and Transformers 4 made a lot of money there apart from the setting being based in China or do so put Robotic panthers in it and the Chinese audience will love it.
-
I think BP will open between 80-90 million.
The only concern/curiosity i have is that starting with GotG2, Disney is going to go into overdrive pumping out a new comic film every 3-4 months, roughly: GotG2, Spidey, Thor, BP, Infinity War, Ant-Man.
We're about a decade into this and there hasn't been a dip in MCU fatigue, so Disney pretty much said "f*** it, balls to the wall!"
In their favor is that the first 4 films listed/slated to appear are of this nature: cosmic, street level, cosmic, street level.. which is good spacing actually. So by the time Hulk/Thor are done, ppl will feel ready to come back down to earth (pun intended).
So if there's no Marvel fatigue a year and half from now, then BP is going to kill it. The first two trailers just need to kick ass as far as the visuals and fight scenes.

NO matter how famcy they get... wakanda is stil on earth lol. It cant match the visuals of magic and dimensions
-
Afrikan James Bond-Wolverine-Batman with tech, stealth, fighter jet, kung fu and best picture nomination level visuals of his sci-fi homeland? Oh and he helped out captain ammurrica that one time?
Shiiiit, shout out to the Russos and Boseman for gift wrapping this for Coogler. Just have that first teaser trailer showcase a peak of Wakanda, some fancy tech here, some fancy kung fu there, and brief looks of Lupita and MBJ. Easy money.
NO matter how famcy they get... wakanda is stil on earth lol. It can match the visuals of magic and dimensions
Easily.
Honestly, there were a lot of really great visual moments in Civil War, but Panther got some of the best in my opinion, as well as some of the best lines. Right now he's extremely well positioned to rock the box office.
Im not that worried about the Panther movie. I think it'll play a lot closer, in terms of tone, to Winter Soldier than it does the standard Marvel formula, which is good, and Boseman has such a presence on-screen he's going to nail the film.
And we haven't even seen his bodyguard in action yet. If the trailer gives us a nice shot of Panther charging into action with a squad of those women behind him? That'll get people excited all on its own. You provide a shot of one of them fighting the Widow or something (which we got teased with in Civil War) you're set to break opening day records.
What concerns me is Captain Marvel. She lends herself well to the standard Marvel movie formula, and I thought that was played out before Ant-Man drove it into the dirt. If they try to play it too safe with Carol it could ruin the whole thing.
-

I don't think they will be able to match Dr. Strange magic and dimensions or maybe they will ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
However, being that Wakanda is the most technological advanced nation in the world, Marvel can use that as an advantage to create good visuals relating to technology i.e properties of Vibranium. In other words, the same way Marvel used Dr. Strange to establish magic that has never been seen before can be used in Black Panther as technology that has never been seen before.

I wasnt saying bp won't sell just that the bar is higher
Antman had the lovable loser thing plus cool powers plus it went almost full blown comedy
Carol has..... umm.... great actress?

I know what you meant, I was just sayin. But really, the bar for T'Challa was always going to be high; he's the first minority to lead a solo film. Expectations are going to be crazy; likely higher than is realistic honestly. I'm not concerned about its quality or potential in the least, but a lot is riding on the film's success and any minor flaw that would be ignored in other films is going to be blown wide open here.
Carol....we'll see. I feel like Black Panther is going to be able to do its own thing and be its own animal and play to T'Challa's strengths as a character and franchise, while Carol....I fear they'll try to put her between "Avengers" and "Guardians" in terms of tone and approach, and if people are getting tired of that formula now, by the time her movie hits it could easily be a death-sentence.

It won't have to out dazzle Dr Strange because it's not trying to be that kind of film. It really just has to look more interesting than the last Mission Impossible movie.
The look and cinematography I'm not worried about, I'm confident in that area. I'm more concerned about the script...

-Narratively, Coogler and the MCU will probably be influenced by a lot of Priest and some Hudlin.
-Visually, Cooger and the MCU will be probably influenced a lot by Stelfreeze.
-Coates talks to Coogler often, as they are friends. However, Coates isn't involved in the making of the film.

The buzz for Panther has to be strong when the movie comes out. I doubt if we can count on the book to help with that so Marvel has to really market the movie.
-
Well, BP's front and center in the main disney cartoon next year and is in all the mobile video games, so tbh nobody is really paying any mind on the comics to promote anything, not anymore than Dr. Strange's comic helped promote the movie. It's more like the other way around if anything.
What was cool was that the popular Future Fight mobile game comes out with new playable characters and MCU costumes as timed releases coinciding with each upcoming MCU event, from Civil War to Luke Cage's netflix to now all the characters like Mordo, Wong and Strange that they made playable last week. They go the extra mile to change the layout and design to promote whatever specific MCU event is about to drop.
Marvel gon promote the hell outta BP's movie through it's usual means and they gon have all the lil kiddies and casuals well aware of the guy through the cartoons and games

Oooooo im getting all tingly about killmonger, mbaku, shuri, a dora, klaw in FF
I WANT A THRICE BLESSED ARMOR UNIFORM!!!!!

The strongest element of Doc Strange were the visuals though underneath was your typical Marvel film. A lot of people have echoed this sentiment. I'm more worried about Black Panther in the wake of Thor:Ragnarok because how do you top Thor, Loki, Hulk, Hela, and Valkyrie in one film? If Takia pulls it off it will be epic.
I think the best thing they can do for Black Panther is to let Ryan Coogler have some freedom and allow him to break the typical Marvel formula. If it follows all of the same beats as past Marvel films people probably won't be too thrilled by it but if it does it's own thing and have it's own flavor it will be a hit.
-
"All marvel movies have been successful with house style"
"Let Coogler break the house style"
In what bizarro world does that make sense?
Stange didnt get 90k on rt and all the money jyst bc its pretty
One of the best things going for bp is Thor 3. Going from multi realms, superhuman gods to a political, WS like movie will make it feel fresh.

Finished "Time Runs Out". Overall good story, but a little confusing(Doom, Molecule Man, Beyonders). Based on this story I could make the argument that BP brings too many problems home(Wakanda), when he could set up the Illuminati stuff of site. If there was justification to remove him from power, this is what I would use. Will read Secret War soon, but is anyone else tired of the world screws Wakanda and Tchalla forgives and keeps working with them? When he talked to Obama at the end I was like "that's my BP", but now he's with the Ultimates working with the international community and I'm saying to myself "why, they defiantly are not there to help you". Makes me miss Hudlin when BP would tell people to kick rocks. lol

China will not show it. They seem to have issues with black folks in lead roles. The majority of Rock's films have done well in China but guess what film he just did-didn't show there? The one with Kevin Hart.
So China has to be left out of the conversation.
Black Panther is a whole different beast for Marvel & Disney.
First film with a POC in lead roles.
So you already know the usual trolls will be out in FULL force with tooth and comb in hand to pick apart this film from who is in it MBJ to treatment of whites, treatment of women, to pace and every other possible flaw every other MARVEL film has had but got ignored.
This has to be the film that says "all your excuse about POC as leads and not making a profit" are OVER. If Creed, Blade, Static Shock, Fast & Furious, XXX, Star Wars TFAW, Luke Cage, even WW & Aquaman didn't drill that into everybody's head-then maybe this will.
Disney has no choice but to go all out. They have endured fan backlash over the comics, threats from DC fans and everything else-yet still stayed the path. Might as well go all the way.

I def agree with the spirit of your post, and maintain that season 1 should've been the world selling out Wakanda to the Cabal in TRO and how Wakandans want to react to it. The world doing what it did was highly significant, as Wakanda's isolationist policy was simultaneously validated and immediately rendered obsolete once Wakanda was destroyed. In theory, T'Challa collaborating with the Ultimates, though effective and well-intentioned, should've resulted in a lot of backlash back home, as Wakandans would never trust outsiders as a collective ever again.
Season 1 should've been the two factions (T'Challa vs the People) fighting for which new foreign policy should be implemented for the long term, with T'Challa favoring a more collaborative approach (reflected by collaborating with the Ultimates), while Tetu and the People favor a much more unilateral--and antagonistic--approach. In between, the Doras are divided on which way to go, Changamire believes the Wakandan people should have a bigger say on what direction Wakanda should go, and Shuri returns from her trip in the Djalia, believing that a long-lasting compromise is needed before Wakanda moves forward.

Marvel allowing people to come in and break format is what has us suffering through whatever the hell Coats is doing.
I'm very glad that they and Ava parted ways for that reason. I don't know what she would have attempted or how good it would have been but I'd rather they played it safe for the first movie and not risk an Ang Lee-esk Hulk disaster

Ha! That would be something to see on panel, lol.
To clarify, neither side are isolationists. The isolationism days, imho, were effectively over when Wakanda was destroyed in part due to the world's decision in TRO.
In my scenario, the opposition would lean more towards unilateralism, drawbacks and all. They'll wants to expand significantly expand Wakanda's sphere of influence at a level never seen before in Wakanda's history and at a level that would definitely make world governments concerned, and even result in major geo-political clashes. Being the most technologically advanced nation in the MU, Wakanda could make that happen, and a significant amount of the Wakandan population would support such a thing too, imho.
In short, T'Challa wants to drop the isolationist policy and hopes to build a more collaborative approach, within reason, to help ensure Wakanda's survival. The opposition wants to drop the isolationist policy and wants to expand Wakanda's geopolitical and military influence at a much larger scale unilaterally (even at the expense of other foreign nations), to help ensure Wakanda's survival.
Both ideologies are destined to come to a head.

For the life of me, I cannot remember the exact issue of that story. BP #17 of the Hudlin run reffered directly to that story too.
But yea, the "take the whole continent" thing is more or less what the opposition would want to do imho, especially after the events of TRO. Wakanda would exert the most amount of power and influence in its entire history. However, said direction, especially unilaterally, would result in a major clash with the outside world.
T'Challa wouldn't want that, especially if Wakanda's survival can be achieved without direct confrontation and in a way that doesn't compromise it's sovereignty. The opposition knows this, thus the conflict.
