HA HA HA! I honestly didn't, now if by weird you meant simply different then absolutely, If theses young ladies are meant to be bodyguards to one of the baddest guys on the planet from a nation of some of the baddest guys on the planet that would mean they would be in need of a ton of training, in that regard its probably best to go with someone more easily moldable and has the body to withstand the harsh training ahead, for example in the marines/military they star recruiting at 17, young healthy bodies and young minds to be molded to the marine corps standard, whereas older recruits usually present the most problems due to health and an "I'm a grown ass man mentality".
The clothes they wear never really bothered me either they were usually in what looked like upscale spots and likely needed to dress the occasion, if anything I was more concerned with how they plan on fighting in skirts lol!
If the marines decided to use 16 year old teenage girls to guard the president I'd personally find that weird too. Just saying.
Can we at least read the first issue first?
Noope...
Frankly, I already bought all 12 issues. I'm supporting it regardless. But I can't wait what Coates' interpretation will look like. Because it's not just his, it's also Stelfreeze's.
-
I also hope Coates doesn't get too preachy with this run. If there's anything that will kill the series for a lot of newcomers its that.
On the other hand, I want this story to say something.
I went from being excited about this to dreading it
Most of the things I like about the mythos Coates seems to hate
Ross, the Doras, M'baku etc znd the whole going against the monarch thing isn't something I care to read about. Monarchies are cool in fiction.
Every writer has had a different take on Black Panther, so I'm OK with that. My first introduction was Don McGregor and Priest took things he liked from that and abandoned things he didn't care about. Hudlin did the same.
With Priest's take on the Dora Milaje, I found it disturbing and creepy. I appreciated that because it was something that showed Wakanda wasn't a western fantasy. It has a side the west simply wouldn't agree with. Hudlin's take solved that discomfort, but it was more simple. Visually, it was very cool, though. I want the movie to borrow from Hudlin's take. But I'll let Coates do what he wants. As I said before, I may not agree with all his choices, but I feel confident that he'll give everything careful attention before he makes it.
By his own admission, Ta-Nehisi Coates clearly states that when he was approached by Marvel to write for them, Spiderman and the X-Men were the first characters/books that sprang to his mind.
Black Panther didn't even register on his personal scale of preference.
I'm reminded how Priest, just this week, revealed how he got Deathstroke for DC, and how surprised he was to be ASKED to write a character that didn't share his ethnicity.

Also to add to it, Priest didn't have his sites on BP when he was hired by Marvel to write BP either, he was disappointed even. An the reason is because he isn't as known as the other heroes, after Coates, CW, MCU solo's Etc etc, soon we will get writers having BP on their list to write about as well and being stoked to get him

The Dora's were African Robin's and Female, instead of young boys. That's the simple way of looking at it.
-
It's going to be interesting when the Squadron come after Tchalla. He should be last and take them down like he did the Four.
-
people are nitpicking too much about the Doras. Mark Texiera's art was awesome in the first arc.. people are talking like they were in straight up bikini thongs throughout his tenure..

Robin is pretty weird too if you think about it.
But most comic book fans I suppose are more used to the idea because of Robin.
I have no idea why Priest went with the 16 years old, dressing a bit older" paradigm for the Dora Milajes he introduced to the BP mythos, but there's no denying the fact that the concept of female bodyguards fiercely loyal to their King was something that had never been explored previously within the mythos.
As regards the only talking to the king thing, I always saw that as being indicative of no one else being seen as worthy of the Dora's attention or even passing recognition as opposed to anything portraying them as being submissive to T'Chall on some harem type arrangement.
Maberry's Doomwar virtually turned thw Dora Milaje's into cannon fodder during Doomwar so it goes without saying that I'm not particularly fond of the bald headed battle maiden aesthetic Hudlin launched.
Yeah... that is the problem wirh introducing an army of them... they become fodder ie the ninja paradigm lol.
What? When is that going down?
Speculation.
They killed namor, and next "coming soon" teased black bolt. But hes as protected as tchalla now so idk whats gonna happen there.

My issue is the age, if the Dora's in priests run were in Their 20s then it would make sense for how they were dressed (very adult like) but it also just didn't make sense when they were cracking skulls to be doing so in tight dresses and high heels. And no one said the art was bad, just some of the choices for the DM seemed odd
I'm starting to think there will be a lot of changes than we may have expected, not just the monarchy being depowered / gone.
I'll remain cautiously optimist on the Coates on, but that he even contemplated removing perhaps the one thing practically all BP fans like, the DMs is very surprising. It isn't a deal breaker per se, but damn.
I wouldn't have been too concerned by that...what one writer removes, another writer can put back. That's the beauty of fiction.

I always have this vision of when Black Panther eventually gets another wife/queen, the Dora Milaje would transition over to being the queen's personal bodyguards while the Hatut Zeraze would become T'Challa's bodyguards...that way no one could talk about how "creepy" the whole thing is.

Didn't feel "creepy" to me (remember Creepy Black Brotherhood? ah, those were the days!) 'cos those were some stacked ladies for being 16 and ****...but that's prolly Tex tho' (dude can't stop, won't stop drawing them ladies stacked).
Anyhoo, Imma go ahead an' read dat #1 and go from there.
Coates a fan of Hickman's BP? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I do like 75% of the Doras and there "stuff."
The teenage thing? Let it go, and I feel they have for the most part. I can't remember the last time there age as been brought up and they don'n tlook like teenagers.
The wives-in-training hasn't been brought up in ages. For good reason.
The 'beloved' thing needs to go IMO because... weird.
Everything else, I like. There is nothing wrong with the Dora's being bodyguards to the royal family. Nothing at all and its cool AF. And, that is pretty much what they have been for years so.
So in summary..
less of this...

The problem I have with Hudlin's version (and everyone else's version after Priest) of the Dora Milaje is that they are all drawn looking extremely similar...how can you tell them apart? At least with Priest's run, there were only two Doras and you could tell them apart, not only by hairstyle but by name. After Priest, every Dora looked like a clone of all the other Doras.
And all the Doras post-Priest were bald...can we please get a Dora with a bad comb-over or something over here? Or at least one Dora with a shaved head on one side and a full-grown, out-of-control, Misty Knight-type Afro on the other side?

There really only need to be a handful of Dora's that you see and only 3 we know, Qdj, Okoye and Aneka would be enough. Qdj could have a fill head of braded hair like in Priest's run, Okoye could sport a shaved head save a long pony tail and Aneka could go full bald (I liked that lokn in Ewings Ultimates). Okoye and Aneka should sport the tattoos on their faces
WHere is this interview keep hearing about?
It isn't an interview. It's a reply on his blog:
http://lamerciepark.com/wp/?p=467#comment-29661
In particular, this portion:
If I were editing Deathstroke, I’m not sure I would have picked me, which then made me interested in taking a swing because it’s been a very, very long time since a publisher last selected me for a project based on my actual writing as opposed to my being, y’know, a Republican. I would never have pitched for Deathstroke (although I did write Conan for a long time–shameless plug for Dark Horse which has reprinted most of my run). But it occurred to me that somebody, somewhere, at DC actually gave this some thought– gave *me* some consideration past my ethnicity– which earned my respect for DC because I felt like this was an earnest creative decision more so than, “we need a Republican to write this.”
That all depends on what Mr "T'Challa didn't register on my mind" Coates actually does with the BP mythos.
The NYTimes article has more or less revealed Coates to be a writer who wants to leave his mark on the BP mythos by pulling a revisionist Maberry/Hickman like revisionist driveby on said mythos.
He has ZERO respect for what came before and will probably use BP as a stepping stone to go write characters and books he's more attracted to.
To date, post Kirby and Mcgregor, Hudlin remains the only writer who actually wanted to write T'Challa from jump straight no chaser.
It's funny how the writer who actually cares about the BP mythos the most is the one who supposed hotshots like Maberry and Coates barely acknowledge as they go on to give faux praise to Priest's take on the BP mythos just before they water **** down or impose their own revisionist agenda on said mythos.
-
Yeah... that is the problem wirh introducing an army of them... they become fodder ie the ninja paradigm lol.
Exactly. :smh:
-
I feel like we are jumping the gun here. Coates and Stelfreeze have both shown us alot of good things that they want to do for BP. 95% of what Coates has been sayk g has been on point and to switch up over this when he has so far shown to have done alot of research and has thus far seemed to genuinely want to show BP respect infeel it's unfair to jump to conclusions that he is gonna pull a Mayberry or Hickman. It's not really a big deal that he didn't have BP on his list, CJP didn't have T'Challa on his radar yet he provided arguably the best BP run to date. Plus Coates is excited to write Bp and plans to continue to write the series after the first 11 issues. Ontop of that, Bo is about to blow up in the MCU there would be no way Marvel would let Coates to chump T'Challa. That would be extremely counter productive
