Interview with Alonso Axel in 2016:
CBR: This also appears to be the biggest push yet in a deliberate attempt to establish Black Panther as one of the top players in Marvel — is that fair to say?
Alonso: Without a doubt. Our goals were not modest. Coming out the other side of “Secret Wars,” we wanted to launch a big “Black Panther” series that would reposition T’Challa as one of the key players in the Marvel Universe, and Ta-Nehisi and Brian are going to do just that. Between “Black Panther,” “Civil War II” — in which he plays a big role — and “Captain America: Civil War” — in which he also plays a big role — all eyes will be on the Panther, the first, and best, Black superhero.
MU, not so much.

Yeah, maybe he confused Coates with Ewing. lol(But I don't think that worked the way they wanted either. Lol

Post from 2016. Holt gets it.
Several people have drawn the parallel to Finn, and to be honest, I don't see it. Marvel isn't trying to launch a spin-off franchise around Finn. Finn got his ass whooped and nobody cared because the trilogy is ultimately Rey's story, not his. If people came away not wanting to see anything else about Finn, that's not a major loss because Disney was never banking on him as a lead.
Black Panther? A good showing here is paramount. If his first ever exposure to a mainstream audience is him getting clowned and made to look incompetent, then that drastically reduces the chance that people want to watch his movie. Marvel knows this. Disney knows this. They aren't in the business of losing themselves money by putting out a film starring a character nobody likes anymore.
Well, back in 2016 they were also trying to make Iron Man their new flagship character, and we all saw how that went :p.

Don't get me started on that! As a huge Iron Man and BP fan, I've going through comics hell for two years!
I imagine if Marvel wants to turn the Big 3 into the Big 4, he's gonna start showing up in a lot of places that Steve, Tony, and Thor are going to be.
He brings in $, so I wouldn't be surprised. Also he is so multifaceted (mysticism/tech/tactician/master combatant etc) he works in almost any corner of the MCU
Posts from 2016 about BP movie merchandise. Foreshadowing by Vic Vega and MoS:
I'll repeat again that the movie is more important than the comic, as much as I hope the book does well. Getting a movie means that there is merch available in stores and a book to go along with the movie and the merch.
Without the movie, it might as well be the David Liss run for all the impact that it would have no matter who they put on it.

Yep.
Coates writing BP solo without a movie is just another comic book.
Movie = BP stuff EVERYWHERE.
3 year old wanted a hat at some random outlet store that had the old school marvel profiles... BLack panther was on there.
At the Disney store, they had BLack Panther in there "figurine" box (along with falcon!) promoting CW. Also on a coffee cup promoting CW and as soon as the movie drops, there will be toys galore.
comic book run could 100% bomb and Black Panther is still gonna blow, thanks to the movie.

The complaints back in the day were always "Why is there no BP merch?" "Aquaman has merch and nobody even likes Aquaman(jk)!"
Aquaman was in some syndicated cartoon back in the 70's (and Justice League Unlimited) and he has a near constant stream of merch because of it.
All this BP merch we are getting now is JUST FOR CIVIL WAR.
Imagine what happens when the Black Panther movie actually drops...
Absolutely he does. He's similar to Batman in that you can use him in everything from street level stories to cosmic ones, and everything in between. Theoretically there's no type of story where he doesn't work in, because he's very scalable both up and down. You don't necessarily want to pit Daredevil against THanos or Thor against Kingpin, but BP works in either. That's one of the beauties of the character. He's incredible versatile.
Post from 2016, T'Challa's love interest. Ezy Brezy makes the right call!
Ah that makes sense. What if they went a different route all together and made Nakia his love interest, aged her about 5-7 years and tied that out?

Speaking of that, I was recently looking back at the posts from 1-2 years back. It's a very good thing the movie announcement came out when it did. We were all pretty close to going at each other.
The Coates run will most definitely spark new debates. But as along as the movie portrayals are on point, we'll be fine.
More pressure on the movies I guess lol.

Whether or not I agree with anyone here on who, what, where, or why if who the Black Panther is, can we all agree the kids who get to play with BP toys and dress up in a costume and pop the popcorn to watch T'Challa on DVD are the real winners. They are the future of BP in whatever medium. And some of their fantasies of who, ehat, where, when, and why of who BP is will be shared with the world and debated on forums of a different nature. Ain't it great?
