It's too late.
Coates and his BP mythos misrepresenting self needs to go somewhere else with his fail'challa.
I could care less who T'Challa's talking to in this solitary scan.
Very curious on who he's talking to...
Probably the new chieftain of the Jabari. Apparently M'Baku had TWO brothers.
Hudlin is my personal favorite BP writer and I'll go to my grave defending that opinion.
For as much as I respect and enjoy Priest's work, there were certain decisions he made that smacked of pandering to a white audience, which I absolutely detested when I started reading his black panther run when I was 14. I absolutely HATED Everett Ross narrating Black Panther's adventures and I detested the unnecessary and bizarre inclusion of Hunter.
Hudlin in comparison, wrote something I honestly NEVER thought I'd read in a mainstream comic, a black hero who was allowed to BE a black hero, from his own perspective and voice. A character who was free to be awesome, who actually OVERCAME adversity through understanding that he was indeed better than almost everyone, and when he wasn't better, he was more resilient. A character who wooed a woman, one of the most powerful mutants in the world; a BLACK woman, by treating her with love and respect. A character who didn't allow a slight to go unpunished. A character who embraced being King and utilized his position to instill pride in his nation. Hudlin wrote a T'Challa who was able to enjoy himself and those around him, while at the same time retaining his regality.
Same here...
Coates recently did a Q&A on twitter where he may have dropped some gems... The Shona, Maroon and Hatian influence, muslim wakandans, and Come through on Taku is all I am saying.
Nothing he said was wrong. Spider-Man and Wolverine should also be qualified with "for a lot of people", because everyone doesn't like them like that or in that way.
Plus NOTHING he's doing will do what he is talking about.
I don't know off to a good start with another book.Spider-Man and Wolverine may have kicked ass but they also lost alot too. I think hindsight is key we are talking about a monthly comic here vs completed arcs back in the 70s and 80s before we had the internet and stuff it may have been really easy to pick and choose and get stuff instantaneous.
As far as the current run there has always been challenges for BP, I think this is the first run where you see the challenges of the actual country and the people in it. BP ain't everywhere crimes and atrocities have happened under his watch, but I like the way he's portrayed as a king who is having to deal with all these issues at once but he ain't breaking.
As far as the DM. I'm glad he didn't kill Ayo in issue 4 it would have been cliche. But one of the things about Hudlin's run that I wasn't found of and by extension Maberry's run the DM didn't have any personality barely any names. Hudlin's run was cool for T'Challa as far raising his profile in the MU but like I said the world around got boring.

The bolded I don't like Hunter's origin. As a character he's cool but I think he might need an update. The whole white boy being raised by an African king trope his just frought with stereotypes. Looks like if Coates has it his way, he'll be writing BP for a while.
Coates held an impromptu Q&A about his BP book on his twitter. Copied and pasted the notable questions (with Coates' answers) below. More question on his twitter feed.
Q: how many issues do you want to do?
A: 60.
Q: Is the BP hulkbuster armor going to show up in your run?
A: Been talking to @gregpak and @Wil_Moss about that. Lotta Cho fans in Wakanda.
Q: will T'Challa and the Hatut Zeraze's ideological differences resurface at some point?
A: Not quite. T'Challa doesn't have much to lean on. Lotta people are dead. Not much time to air differences.
Q: Have you read Chris Priest's run? Is that an influence?
A: Of Course!
Q: what can we expect of black panther #5?
A: A plan.
Q: regret anything?
A: I mean, I regret I wasn't as good in Issue #1 as I was by the time I got to #12. But, oh well. No way outta that.
Q: In your head, how many seasons (or the comic equivalent of seasons) were you writing this for?
A: Five. 60 issues.
Q: do you feel its more important for T'Challa to show more progress as a warrior or as a king
A: IDK. I think of the divide as being between "hero" and "king"--two ideas I think are in conflict. I don't chose tho.
Q: other than establish contact between these two characters (Tetu and Changamire), what's the purpose of this interaction?
A: Can't say without spoiling. But not a great scene. Too many words in the bubble. Dialogue thick as brambles.
Q: Last Deadpool, Black Panther gets beyond pissed at him for attempting to spoil Game of Thrones, he really that big a fan?
A: Of course. They telling his story.
Q: Will Taku return to Black Panther's inner circle?
A: Think he kinda has to.
Q: will there be any additional threats to the kingdom?
A: F*ck yeah.
Q: what do you say to the readers that say there isn't enough action happening?
A: I don't know what to say. I can only write the book I want to read. I hope people like it. I'm sorry if they don't.
Q: What has been the best or most interesting part of writing the Black Panther comics so far?
A: Learning the importance of structure. So key in comics.
Q: was there any push back about the direction you wanted to take black panther
A: None.
Q: what was the inspiration for the new Dora milaje armor?
A: We just wanted something that made them look like the soldiers they are. @Stelfreeze came through as he always does.
Q: of all of the characters in the last arch, who has the best intentions, in your opinion?
A: They all have the best intentions. "Maybe that was the problem..."
Q: how do you plot the logistics of a fight scene? like do you plot from the end backwards or let it flow organically?
A: Weakest part of my game. Been watching a lot of action films and reading a lot of @brubaker and taking notes.
Q: is the BP Book 1 listed for release on 9/13 the entire first story arc?
A: Yeah but "arc" is confusing. Think of it as Act I in a three act play.
Q: single favorite panel from the run so far?
A: The Ramonda panel in Issue #4 when T'Challa picks her up. Effed me up the first time I saw it.
Q: would you consider the conflict between monarchy & democracy to be a central theme to the run?
A: One of the big ones.
Q: have you considered doing more superhero books after Panther?
A: Not since I started. I think about T'Challa way more than is healthy.
Q: Any thoughts on the Nighthawk book?
A: Adore it.
Q: what helped you identify the eventual new identity of Wakanda at the end of your run?
A: Thinking a lot about the country, itself. Not just its problems, but its established traditions and institutions.
Q: is Bast still relevant?
A: Always.
Q: “when are we going to get some action? it's just a bunch of talking so far...
A: “It is what it is. Nothing wrong with dropping it. Lotta great action books out there. Everything ain't for everyone.”
Q: Was there a struggle with authenticity in creating this new Wakanda? How are you avoiding pathologizing?
A: Pathology comes when you sub in magic for history to explain broad problems.
Q: so does how will BP push back against democratization without becoming Doctor Doom?
A: I mean, that's issues 5-12, right?
Q: Do you love writing the character?
A: Enormously. Was sad when I got to issue #12.
Q: what's your turn around time between final draft & production? Also, has Stelfreeze's art ever inspired you to do a rewrite?
A: Finished Issue #12 just when Issue #1 came out. Wanted to leave room for corrects.
Q:at your Q&A live stream you mentioned senagal influences? Any other cultures? You mentioned Wakanda as a UN of real tribes?
A: Hausa. Maroons of Jamaica. Some Haiti. Some Shona.
Season 2 on the way and WoW around the corner.... Things just getting started, has he really failed now in four issues vs any other point in his history???
Coates entire involvement with the BP mythos was a fail right from the get go.
Priest, Hudlin and Liss's respective runs were solid in portraying a T'Challa central to his own mythos, battling with trials and tribulations.
Coates brings nothing new to the table other than rape, rebellion and an utterly useless king.

Kirby Run: It's full of crazy ideas and bad dialogue and I love it. It's nuts and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Gillis Run: I'll be honest I didn't read it.
Panther's Rage: I mostly liked it. Despite his faults, I think Don McGregor is underrated as a comic book writer.
Priest Run: Dude, re-invented BP for a new generation. He deserves all the praise he gets for this.
Hudlin Run: When it was coming out, I was kinda "meh" on it. Looking back I respect his run more. He gave the people want they wanted mostly cuz he wanted the same things. And he did it while building on what Priest laid down.
Liss: He was given a terrible premise yet still turned out some entertaining comics.

Priest's Run: Introduction to the mythos but I agree it's a bit difficult to get through the first time around.
Hudlin's: Tbh I'm more mixed on this one but I do agree T'Challa's awesome here. Not sure how I feel about the way Luke is written here.
Liss: Like others have said, he took a bad premise and made it work.
My biggest takeaway from the Q&A is that Coates didn't know what he was doing early on, but his editors allowed substandard scripts to get published anyway.
Seriously, what's wrong with giving a neophyte a trial one-shot or mini before throwing them into the deep end with an ongoing?
(Of course, now they are doing it again with BP:WoW. :smh: )

I see what you're saying but I think they at least avoid the stereotype of having him be the best of the Wakandans as T'Challa is easily his superior.
A closer reading suggests you might be correct. In any case, Ramonda had the ability to free her, but not the desire. So she's more to blame than T'Challa, who apparently didn't even know about the case.
I don't honestly think either T'Challa or Ramonda deserve blame. I understand reasonable minds may differ, but I think Ramonda's decision was the correct one.

I'm just a bit confused by this, so maybe someone can clarify if they know more. Why was he sad when he got to issue 12 if his run is continuing for another 4 "seasons"? Taking a break? I like that the scripts were already done before the first issue came out, but if that means waiting like a year between "seasons," my interest is likely to wane.

Coates already started working on season 2. On the recent Q&A livestream he said that season two will start next April, I believe. There won't be much of a gap between seasons.
As for him being sad when he got to issue 12...perhaps a reflection of a potential emotional attachment he had for the character when he completely season one of T'Challa's journey? I can't say for sure, can only speculate until he clarifies it someday.

The thing about it is I don't believe the editors felt the scripts were substandard. Axel had nothing but praise for them.
I suppose it's possible he didn't like then and is just propping them up, but either way I'm certain he's happy with the books commercial and critical sucess so far.

Oh man you gotta read Gillis run. Seriously it's highly underrated... it's the correct way to show a hero who is down (TPG depowered him) yet he is still kick ass. Oddly enough looking at Gillis Bp you can probably see an Area that Priest could of used besides what Lee and Kirby presented. As you see T'Challa singlehandedly take out a superhuman terrorist group, using superior h2h and his mind, like Priest's Panther. Essentially he is a priest lite Bp. Also he takes on his god and outsmarts him... you gotta read it. It's great and disgustingly underrated
Hunter is fine just the way he is.
Eh I kinda disagree. I don't like his origin story that much either to be honest. O mean it's fine and Priest did a wonderful job getting you to understand why he is the way he is (his connection with Ramonda and both feeling like outsiders which drew the. Closerwas), spot on. But it does feel like a stereo type. A white male taken in, and learns the ways to become king (if T'Challa was never born) and change the viewpoint of his subjects to not judge on appearance or w/e. I mean to u know how many times that's been spun? Props to Priest for putting this twist in but really that's the origin story for Tarzan, and a bunch of other movies that put a white male into a culture or location you would likely never find them.
Cool. For a split second, I was thinking he spoiled T'Challa's death or something.
Bp isn't Gonna for anytime soon (hopefully never) I took it as maybe he was sad because originally this was supposed to be a 12 issue story then he would be done. because he had that script finished pretty quickly before issue 1 dropped

Hunter's origin would still be problamatic probably why Hudlin didn't touch him. Hunter never really desired to be king just to honor his father T'Chaka , he's pro nationalistic Wakanda despite being an outsider so he's looked down upon by other hardline Wakandans.
T'Challa, is not being written like a moron and Wakanda isn't being written like a an undeveloped country. Like I said earlier BP can't be everywhere there should be other services addressing the needs of the rural community but they are pre occupied at the moment.
So I guess BP calls in the new "crew" to help handle whatever involvement Stane has elsewhere.

Much like Victor Freeman, you and I are never going to agree on how Coates has handled T'Challa and Wakanda thus far.
I'm not the only poster on this or other similarly themed forums, that has a problem with what Coates has done to Wakanda as regards rape camps and manufactured gender drama for the sake of it.
Right from the very first issue of Coates BP, T'Challa has been written as an ignoramus bereft of his tactical awareness and characteristic coolness in the face of fire.
He rushes into battle with ZERO prep and just comes across as a neophyte punching way above his weight and to make matters even worse, the man who was usually 10 steps ahead friends and enemies alike, is nowhere to be found in Coates book whilst the Midnight Angels are kicking all amounts of deviant and depraved ass.
Shuri had to stay in limbo for Coates to facilitate his false narrative of misogyny in Wakanda but hey at the end of the day, he's making crazy amounts of money for Marvel so he'll be on the book for the forseeable future.
