Honestly, the most reassuring thing is Luke Cage. That raised similar concerns to me and I thought it turned out to be unfounded. Also, Hidden Figures isn't making Blockbuster money, but it was a solid success as an Oscar bait film.
I wasn't a fan of Luke Cage to be honest, but some of the criticisms I heard about it was it was too black/hood. "Aw look, they are using the N word at the barbershop and talking sports." I'm Asian and go to barbershops and I'm like "This is pretty accurate whenever I go cut my hair." lol
-
Actually hidden figures is a pretty huge success. It only had a budget of around $25 million and it's already make $90 million. If it gets an Oscar bump it might have chance of hitting $100 million.
We've talked about the myth of Black leads not drawing in audiences before and there's just SO much evidence that debunks it. Kevin Hart is one of the biggest movie stars out there right now, his films are made on fairly low budgets and they always turn a huge profit. Central Intelligence made only a couple millions less than Ghostbusters last year and did so on less than half of the budget and not nearly as much marketing.
Kevin Hart is just on fire though. Damn near everybody loves/knows him. I'm glad he's successful even if his movies are very "eh" at times.
Lol I saw them
The one that stuck out to me

I always think it's funny when people claim not to care about something yet take the time to make a special announcement to let everyone know that they don't care about that thing.

My bad, I was looking at Rotten Tomatoes, which I think used the week's numbers as opposed to total.

While, as a white person, I literally didn't even notice that I hadn't seen a white person until we saw a white person in episode two or three (the restaurant manager at Cottonmouth's club).

Its a similar situation as to where some people said that the didn't care about the upcoming Captain America movies and when those movies were released, all of a sudden the same group of people were all up on Steve Roger's d*** saying how awesome he is
lol gtfo
I think Marvel is too big right now to have people not check them out. They can bring any obscure character at this point with zero popularity and produce a hit, regardless of movie quality. That is interesting to think about what a predominantly black cast could lead to though. Maybe it can be viewed as too "Afro-centric" or something and push others away from it or something.
Oh we'll be lucky if the worst thing anyone says is that it's too afro-centric. I totally expect cries of "reverse racism!" "Identity Politics!" "If they can make Capt America black why not make Black Panther white? SJW!!"
-
In terms of sales, that's great, but he/she probably means in terms of critical reception. The movies are extremely divisive (SS was mostly met with hate). It's definitely possible to be shitty movies quality wise and be financially successful though. Look no further than Fast and Furious or Transformers. I'm not sure what direction DC wants to take with their franchise, but if it is the FF and Transformer route, I'd be very disappointed.
It's basically like Coates run. Financially successful, but a sh*t run

There wasn't a white person for 2-3 episodes? Wow, that is kinda funny. I totally didn't notice. Which I guess is a good thing.

LMAO I would die laughing if people were like "Why is everyone in Wakanda mostly black?"
-
I thought the most offensive comment on the movieweb page was "Bucky will show up in the 3rd act and Black Panther will ask him for help" and "Buckys not in this I won't be watching!"
The rest are typical snide remarks you typically get when discussing Black heroes.
-
I find it hilarious that some people are still talking about Steve Rogers, Bucky, or other Avengers showing up to "help", even though Marvel has officially released the cast list.

People said that about Cage! "How come there's no white people in this?"

It's disheartening and kind of scary how quick people are to assume that Black Panther needs the help of white heroes. Remember how leading up to Civil War people just assumed T'Challa was going to the U.N. and the Avengers for help? Turned out Wakanda was taking the lead on the accords and the Avengers asked T'Challa for help.
People are really invested in the idea of Black people being incapable and needing the help of white people.
We saw the same thing leading up to Luke Cage where people just assumed Jessica Jones and Iron Fist were going to show up to help Luke.

I was actually kinda hoping Matt would show up at the end there to help out. Cage seemed to need a good lawyer. But I guess they'll save that for Defenders.
