+ 5 years of being in an Avengers book, which is likley the most important thing for monthly issues.
Very true, I don't think you can at all discount Hickman placing a good amount of spotlight on the character for a good length of time. And that was a company wide event, so T'Challa effectively commanded the biggest spotlight marvel could muster leading up to all of this.
Marvel definately maneuvered all the pieces in place very very well. Part of me wishes the BP movie was a little closer to all of this. But I actually like it being the last movie just prior to Infinity War. That will likely make it a more important movie.
I imagine that was just the culmination of a perfect storm of things, which would be very very difficult to replicate a second time and likely impossible to sustain. The buzz from Coates plus the buzz from Coogler plus the post Civil War buzz probably all snowballed together at just the right time to create something greater than the sum of it's part.
I'm honestly skeptical if they could replicate anything close to that even when the actual BP movie comes out (though I'm hopeful marvel proves me wrong).
I don't think that will be ever replicated again, or at least for a loooooong time. What we witnessed in 2016 did not make sense at all.
A lot of us expected the book to do better than previous runs, but a 250K start a month before Civil War came out? Staying in the 70-80K range for four straight issues, despite all the problems this run had? Outselling Iron-Man and Cap? Competing with Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and even Spidey at one point?
No one saw this coming. Coates for sure didn't. Hell, I doubt Marvel itself saw it coming either. This was flat out bizarre.
Those of us who visit LCS regularly forget how much of a pain in the butt going to an LCS is if its not in your way.
Assuming you have one near you or even know where the nearest one to you is.
A movie isn't going to get Joe Average into a comic shop.
Sometimes I think that it would be cool if places like Gamestop sold comics, because people already go there(and there are peeps who go
there that will never set foot into a LCS).
But the Gamestops are going to go the way of Blockbuster if the Gaming Industry has any say about it.
I never liked the idea of not really "owning" my games when I buy them. Thankfully, GOG is around. Steam on the other hand, feels like I'm renting it.
My LCS also sells games, old systems, merchandise, board games, etc, along with comics. Thank goodness they are still around lol.
I mean this in the nicest way but...
Scott and Widow ain't unique like Panther.
Being black alone was a boon for once. He is... different.
Easy for us to say, we're BP fans .
I'm not too surprised that BP outsold Scott and Widow, but by THAT much?
Scott had a well-received solo film and a well-received Civil War appearance. Widow had great appearances in Iron-Man 2, Avenger films, Winter Soldier and Civil War. And she has ScarJo.
Yet none of them got anywhere close to BP's numbers. Nowhere close to it.

I completely agree. If I wasn't a big BP fan, I wouldn't bother going to my LCS. I would just order the issues and/or trades online.
My two favorite comic book characters are BP characters as well, so when T'Challa and/or Shuri are featured in a cover, for example, I have an extra incentive to go to an LCS than the average viewer of Civil War and other MCU films.
If it wasn't for that, going to an LCS wouldn't even cross my mind.

Well, t'challa could potentially hit an under served section of nerds... minority nerds
Scott aint gonna do that.
Widow is a weird case in that she appears in all these movies, eeryone seemingly loves her... yet no solo movie, merch pales in comparison to the other avengers, and Marvel really sucks at marketing towards girls/woman. PRobably because of Ike once again if the rumors are true about IM3 and such.
But no, I was hoping for Daredevil numbers best case scenario lol. So to have that many issues well above that, in wolverine/spidey range... was awesome. Too bad it doens't look like tha tis going to hold. I really hope we didn't miss our window to become comic A list.
Hopefully, when Marvel eventually re-aligns, T'challa can be on that A list avengers book with Cap, Thor, Stark
Cap, Thor, Stark, Carol, T'challa, Widow, ect
or at least on that B tier New Avengers
T'challa, Carol, Strange, Rhodey, Vision, ect

Have a big name writer and artist come out a year and a half from now for a relaunched #1 issue BP book as we're approaching the 2018 BP film and you'll get another 200k+ sales and Deadpool level monthly sales run for the first few issues.
It's obvious people have the interest in the character, you just can't fukk it up with mundane storytelling again. Would also help if he played a big part in not just Steve's upcoming event, but also the next big event after that.
It could be. But, from my understanding, Ant-Man and Black Widow didn't get a push until very recently too. Both appeared in multiple MCU films with one having his own solo (Ant-Man) and the other being well-featured in several MCU franchises by a very famous actress (Black Widow), yet neither of them managed to sell anything close to Iron-Man or BP's numbers on a monthly basis. Both of their numbers ended up in the very low 20ks or below.
Honestly, BP selling as high as he did still doesn't make sense to me to this day. I expected him to do at most Cap's numbers and most likely Daredevil number. Never saw the 250K sales coming and definitely did not expect the numbers to stay as high as they did for as long as they did, due to the many issues the start of this run has.
Likely if the story progressed faster and had more action in in and less cliffhangers then next issue more build up and it actually followed through on keeping the story moving, it's likely that it would of stayed in the 70-80k range even to Issue 10. But flowery talk and nore build up without cashing in halted that momentum (as well as the constant trashing of the title character and him doubting himself) to the point that it likely will stay in the 40k range now, unless Coates was to really hype up the next issues and Sprouse or Stelfreeze teased some great action scenes

I mean really now... put BP on a relevant Avengers team (not even A-list, as New Avengers wasn't necessarily A-list outside of Iron Man... but they were very important). Plus let him have his shine on in a couple big events (like Hickman let him have in Infinity tie-in but more so SWII heavily). Then you essentially hit the refresh button again in peoples minds.
Plus the usual due diligence in guest appearances and hyping up a relaunched book with an enticing creative team. It's not some unfathomable phenomenon that's hard to understand. BP has averaged 40k sales for the first year in past runs, and that was without the level of exposure and support he had this time around. It's not like this is the Prowler.

Ehhhhhh, I dunno about that. Call me a skeptic on this one.
By all accounts, the sales should've dropped by #3 due to everything we've discussed before. Instead they dropped at #8, when the book finally started to get better writing and pacing.
This whole run has been widely unpredictable, especially when sales are concerned. The more I try to understand it, the bigger the headache I get lol.

Comic book fans gave it a chance (i guess people are finally done with the "twitter followers" narrative and we can all be logical now). And bless the hearts of those comic book fans for trying. But like sheep, they'll come back if the right marketing and steps are made as last time.
I'm more concerned with the follow through. If the same formula is duplicated and that 2018 movie hype is used as the final conduit to catch peoples attention once more... are the powers that be going to stifle the momentum again? Bog it down with all this other hastily rushed redshirt plots? Or are they going to tell a story to elevate and solidify the main character?

Or better yet he starred in a big event that didn't put him in the Tony or Carol side (CW I & II) for fans and had some good showings. Like a cosmic threat appears and like he said in Hickmans run, that Wakanda would drag the rest of the world to the Stars, he follows through on that

They dropped due to underwhelming appearance of the crew followed by more build up with no action and alot of monologue. One of the biggest complaints from casuals have been Tchalla doesn't do anything, and that the book is boring and slow due to no action and too much build up without payouts. So when your getting to the "Climax" of a long story arc and it's still trudging along, people start losing interest. Honestly, this should of been a 10 issue log story rather then 12, that would of cleared up two whole issues to move the story further and not drag like it it did
