He also wrote the "not him" scene. And He wrote the annulment issue of AvX, if I'm not mistaken. Hard pass. I'm not interested in a BP anything from him.
please say this again and louder. just in case the people in back didn't hear u
Wow Coates really wants to write X-men doesn't he. I had to wikipedia the guy who just popped up

I say let him go to the X-Office. The sooner he leaves BP the better. One good issue doesn’t make up for all the crap he’s pulled over the years.

Don't you think that was more of writing at the behest of the company for an event as opposed to a solo or mini-series where he would have more freedom? I'd still give him a chance to do something like that.
Good issue. I have no major complaints. Moved quickly, good action, no shade. I'd buy it if I thought this would continue.
Minor complaints. Exposition at the beginning messed up the tone of the later pages. Ending was anti climatic. Mostly because I have no idea who that character is. lol.
His appearance does however reinforce the Originators being an allegory for Columbus colonization.
Quick google search=what seems to be a minor, but powerful Xmen villain
I will confirm that knowing who that character is makes a huge difference. He's an extremely threatening magical being. I don't want to say more without spoiler code.
[spoil]
The Adversary is associated with Forge and his Chayenne beliefs. He's sort of a Dormammu type character of someone who is extremely powerful but thankfully mostly removed from our world. He also casts illusions and disguises himself as others so he could be right among you and you'd never know. His most famous story is Fall of the Mutants. In the Uncanny X-Men part of that story, the X-Men fight the Adversary and end up "dying" in Dallas. Forge is able to use magic to defeat him.
If you like the best of the 80s, I'd definitely recommend checking out Uncanny X-Men 188 and then 220-227. It ends up being a very powerful story.[/spoil]
Now does Coates like X-characters? I think it's clear he's a big Claremont fan (the use of the Strucker twins is another one). But he also added Stane who isn't one at all. He's drawn from quite a bit of the Marvel universe.
Other thoughts. I thought Ulysses Klaw was creepy and terrifying. He's technically a very unique character, so it's disappointing when he's used in mundane ways. It was also good to see Kasper Cole. Finally, I really enjoyed those Wakandan arm cross thingies from the movie. There's definitely a move towards reconciliation between the former Doras and the Black Panther in order to make Wakanda whole. Zenzi was mostly described in passing, but what she did was scary. It looks like Tetu and Zenzi might continue to be threats for the foreseeable future, which I think is good. Regardless of what people think of Coates, I think it's clear that the Black Panther needs a larger rogues gallery and I hope they continue to be used even after he's done his run.
I wonder if after this arc, we can get some focus on Panther villains?
Because Klaw's been done to death, and Stane and the Struckers belong to other characters. The new guy? Also not a Panther villain, yeesh.

I hope they've been paying attention. Sitting in the back of class is no excuse for turning your work in late. Lol

I'm of the mindset that editorial mandate has no bearing on execution. He could have accomplished the same ends while paying respect to their union and them as individuals. That didn't happen and we got out of character bs by the boatload. And I truly hope you aren't attempting to pass off T'Challa begging Storm not to sleep with Wolverine as an editorial mandate?

oh yes. I love it. I was nervous for the X-men until I saw Wolverine.
[B] Read BP 171. By far the best Issue of coates Ever. It felt like Rise in terms of utilizing T'Challas abilities. We had H2h, acrobatics, Daggers, force push, claws, spear and his prep being used well. The action was good. This was a solid issue that I would say is a 8.5/10. Also lol at Okoye coming back, and the Dora's using the Wakandan salute in the books. Everyone ls in harmony. Now all we need is storm and Eden to be replaced by Nakia and W'kabi and we good. If Only he could keep Issues like this up we might have a half decent run
Ultimately this makes me SMH because it shows Coates can write a decent Tchalla, hell this Issue, a really good one, Like this was the T'Challa we know... But he willingly chooses NOT to do this every time. And for Cap? He ain't pulling any of this isht he is doing with T'Challa. It would be nice of the movie kick started a change since it clearly effected this Issue, and we are stuck with him for Another season. But it's a pipe dream most likely

I feel your pain man. And I still don’t trust Coates, hell he’s probably gonna be back to writing the same old T’Chumpa the Bland Panther in season 3.

Yeah, this was definitely the best Klaw showing in years. He wasn't super uber and didn't end up doing a whole lot (defeating the Midnight Angels isn't something to brag about too hard), but he came off credible. He stayed conscious for more than 2 panels and actually required some planning and effort to beat. It's a good starting point.
As far as the secret big bad at the end... it was a nice surprise. Wouldn't mind at all if he became a BP rogue since the X-Men frankly don't need him. And honestly I never got a very good sense of exactly how powerful he was, so I'm actually kinda interested in seeing exactly what he can do.
Overall this was my favorite issue of Coates run so far (which is cool since I said that about the last issue). So the book is definitely on an uptrend.

I know the new editor in chief redesigned Coates Captain America script, so its entirely possible for them to give them notes. They engineered the breakup and put her back with Logan. So im sure they were looking extra close at the script. lol

We're getting a good mix, which I think is nice.
Tetu and Zenzi are new BP villains. Klaw is a classic. And Stane and the new guy are borrowed characters who work pretty well as BP rogues if they stick around.
I think the problem with using classic BP villains is a lot of them are frankly underpowered. Apart from Klaw, most either don't even have powers or are relatively low tier bricks. Not that there aren't a lot of classic BP rogues I'd like to see return, but I think a lot of the newer additions keep the threat level of the book higher. Especially now that BP has such a large supporting cast of metahumans.
