I've been wanting to get into Judge Dredd lately. There are a ton of stories collected from what I've seen. I also have heard that each story is pretty self contained / the stories aren't slaves to continuity. So my question is what are the best Dredd stories or collections in your opinion?
I have the first phone book that they put out (Complete Case Files), I'm not sure if that's a great one to start with. Like you said, it's all short stories, and hundreds of pages of short stories isn't the smoothest read. I haven't gotten any more of those because of that, but there's work by Brian Bolland and Dave Gibbons (I think) in there. Granted, it's early work, so it's not as evolved as their more famous work. I think there might be a greatest hits collection, that might be a better way to go. You can always go completist later.
I have the big slipcase Tank Girl hardcover, but haven't cracked it open yet. With all the cutting back on spending I've done, I will still probably never catch up to the material I have and the material I continue to buy annually.
I've still got a pretty big to-read stack, too. I bought two or three of the more recent Tank Girl mini-series digitally when there was a sale, and I haven't gotten around to reading most of those yet. I was just excited about that Tank Girl series because Jim Mahfood was drawing it.
You can't go wrong with the Hellboy LEs or the BPRD omnibi. They are both fantastic books. You should check out the Fear Agent Library Editions as they are some of the best books being put out right now, both in production quality and content.
I try to stay away from Amazon. The majority of my orders go through instocktrades.com
Thanks for the recommendation. Those Fear Agent LE's look amazing. I recently found instocktrades, which I hope to order from this weekend. Cheapgraphicnovels looks really good as well except for the lack of a free shipping option, but as of now they have Powers Definitive 1 and BPRD Omnibus 2 in stock while IST doesn't so they're a good second option.

What a load of shit, first the general omnibus thread is gone and then my account is deleted as well..what the hell???
Glad you made part 2 Martin!
-
Well... After looking around for a good 30 minutes, finally found out that everything has been reset by CBR (something about bad vibes in forums, wth...) and was lucky enough to stumble on this beloved thread, thanks MartinNL!
Kind of bs that we didn't get any notice on this.
-
K well, getting things back on track here I guess. Let's do this again then!
Recently got all my books lumped together on one shelving unit so here's my little collection of funny book books...

Gonna need to find a bigger shelving unit pretty soon...

The first few case files are kinda goofy, think silver age type storylines, but once you get to vol 3-4 it gets more modern. Otherwise there are a few stand alone trades of major storylines. Better off going case files though imo because even though theyre stand alone stories, there are references here and there to things in the world in general and its nice to know what theyre talking about.

Do yourself a favor and pull the trigger on the Fear agent books :) If you like sci-fi with a lot of pulp influence, don't hesitate.
Also, HB and BPRD are awesome, but I'm not sure the BPRD hardcovers are omnibuses, I've never seen them called that by the publisher. Nevertheless, great stuff.
-
Absolutely Fear Agent is a great, fun action extravaganza of a comic with utterly gobsmacking artwork. The HCs are beautiful books to behold too.
Hellboy is without a doubt the best comic I've ever read. It's got everything I could possibly want in a comic - a monster with a heart of gold for a protaganist, floating nazi brains-in-a-jar, Lovecraftian tentacle creatures, folk tales and mythology, Mignola's incomparable artwork, other artists awesome artwork, and a perfectly-balanced sense of humour. Just awesome stuff...
The BPRD books are slightly oversize hardcovers and they too are really wonderful comics...
-
well, if other people are posting theirs...
this is my most updated, and it let me use my new phone for pics. funding for new shelves has been put on hiatus for a nursery. i can do panaramas now, so let's start with that:
Been looking into series I might get into with FCBD coming up. Haven't heard of Blacksad, but I'll be sure to check it out now. Thanks.
I'm hoping to possibly pick up one or two of the Hellboy Library Editions along with one or two of the BPRD Ominbus'. I'm also interested in getting a few of the Powers Definitive Hardcover volumes. Not sure what else atm. Any advice for a guy new to comics in general? I've done all my purchases from Amazon and I've avoided receiving any damaged books, but I found some sites recently that look much more appealing.
I've got Blacksad on order, I thought it was oversized and supposed to be brilliant so looking forward to it arriving.
Powers is one of my favourite series, the Definitive editions is the best way to collect it ATM. There is a 6th edition coming soon as well. They are glued but still can be read fine.
If you are in the States you should check out IST it's much cheaper and better packaging than amazon.

There is a Brian Bolland oversized HC collecting Dredd stories containing his art, I used to have it and it was pretty good.
Also great collection pics, weeks that is a boatload of comics.

Woah James! Where can i get that oversized Dracula with Beckly Cloonan illusturations?!

I'd kinda like to see the first 13 or so volumes of the Thomas/Buscema et al Chronicles of Conan get that colossal treatment...
-
Thanks Martin for starting the general one up. Like I said in the DC thread, I felt I didn't have cred to start it, but I'm glad one of the regulars did :)

In your opinion what are the pros and cons of having either the color reprints of EC comics that are focused on the various titles, as opposed to the black and white reprints which are focused on the artists? Im curious because I got Came the Dawn and it looks great. I enjoy the essays they include about the artists and the history/behind the scenes stuff. What am I missing with the color reprints?

it's pretty good, i've read dracula in one form or another many times. after the first few chapters, i went on to something new. i've been meaning to get back to it.

it's issues 0-50 of the kurt busiek and cary nord run and a bunch of extras. it's one of my favorite stories in comics, i originally had it in trades and when i saw the size of it, i had to have it. if you have any interest in conan, it's worth it.

I've seen them mentioned as Omnibus' while doing research so it just stuck in my head :3. I might pick up the 1st Fear Agent LE to get me started, but it's definitely on my short term buy list.
@James: That's a beautiful collection. Thanks for posting it.

Well, for me both treatments have their advantages. My first exposure to the EC stuff was through a childhood friend of mine back in the early 80s who was a huge fan. He had some of the originals and a bunch of reprints. I fell in love with the garish coloring and I feel that's ultimately the way the artwork was intended to be presented. Otoh, I think it mostly looks pretty great in B&W too and I also like the background/historical write-ups in the fantagraphic books. In the EC Archives you get the full issues of the comics...the story quality is up and down but you get the letter pages and adverts and so forth and that's always entertaining to me (oh, not to mention you get the covers in the archives as well of course).

Judging by another picture that was posted earlier it looks the exact same height as the Library Editions. So I'm guessing this new line of Stuff from Dark Horse must be their super oversized Omnibus editions. Right? It collects as many issues as an Oversized Omnibus, but it's as tall as a Library Edition. First Colossal Conan, now Big Damn Sin City is coming out and it's got even MORE pages then the Conan book!! Wonder what else Dark Horse is going to release.

It has some fantastic stuff but I ended up selling mine. I didn't read it very often because I never wanted to get the ropes and pulley out so it mostly sat on the shelf. For me, some books are just too big.

Warren Ellis tweeted earlier that Vertigo informed him that Transmetrolpolitan would be released in 5 hardcovers in the "near future". That's all the info he had. Im assuming these will be in the deluxe format Vertigo has been using lately. Can't wait.

i only flipped through it when it first came, but found it cool. more of an art book with some short stories mixed in than anything else.
