Yeah dc is still unpredictable when it comes to build for its deluxes. As far as other printed covers I can think of from vertigo there's scalped, sweet tooth, the filth, and PR Jesus as well.
Additionally: Pride of Baghdad, Kind Eternity, Flex Mentallo, Black Orchid, Books of Magic, Death, Endless Nights, Sandman Overture and Daytripper. I think the others were mentioned already.
Brightest Day isn't really a part of Johns' Green Lantern epic apart from the issues of Green Lantern that are collected in whichever omnibus. The Brightest Day omnibus would add little/nothing to a reading of his run. BD was also pretty terrible. It started out decent, then got bad, and by the end it was basically someone slapping you in the face while stealing your wallet.
I actually liked BD. it wasn't GREAT, but it's a good read. I think the problem with BD is that it featured too many b listers and not enough star characters. Storywise, it was really good though and the art is sweet.

WOW, only six HCs and all of them are Batman (4) and Superman (2)
-
What a disappointing line up. Oh well, plenty of Marvel/Image books that month to keep me busy.
-
Twenty-six issues in the 52 trade? Is it just me, or is that a massive trade?
-
Just All Star Section Eight for me.
I'll start grabbing SMT when they get back to where they left off.
Thank god I never got rid of my original 52 tpb's with the commentaries.
-
Wow. Those are some sick chunky trades.

You're being way too kind about the legacy of BD.

I've had an interest in 52 since seeing the omnibus, which shortly dwindled when I saw the price. What's the actual story/concept? I know the big 3 are gone for a year but is it quite unfocussed when it comes to characters? Or does it stick to a particular group?

There are multiple story threads that all run separately and resolve themselves in different points in the book. They cover a variety of different genres and are of varying levels of interest or quality based on how you feel about those characters.
The groups include:
Animal Man, Starfire, Adam Strange-this is clearly Grant Morrison's contribution to the series-and it's awesome.
Lex Luthor, Steel
Booster Gold and Skeets
Renee Montoya and The Question
Black Adam and the Marvel Family, with the JSA thrown in
Will Magnus and a bunch of other mad scientists of the DCU
The Elongated Man, following up on Identity Crisis
These are clearly B-list, C-list, and D-list characters. They are very much separate plot threads with each one having its own story. I for one enjoyed the whole series, although the lack of artistic consistency left a bit to be desired. The use of real-time is fun and the variety of concepts and genres keeps the series from becoming boring and repetitive.
-
52 was an excellent series, and some of the follow-ups were great as well (particularly the Animal Man/cosmic stuff)

Adding to Nateallen30 's post, it's the aftermath of Infinite crisis so I would recommend reading that, even though some folks here would say IC is the best thing that ever happened to DC and the most horrible event ever (which is not true and I can understand if some people don't like it but there are some truly harsh comments about IC which are just unfair. I for one really like it and had fun every time I've read it).
I think for a book that run for 52 weeks with multiple creators and handles multiple plotlines it's quite consistent and focused and a very engaging read.
Reread it a few months ago and had an absolute blast with it.

When it comes to "events done well" I definitely prefer DC.
Regardless, both Infinite Crisis and 52 are amazing stories.
