You people are really going out of your way to hate on Duke, that's almost awesome. Almost.
Jason is an incredibly skilled fighter, but if you think that he'll wipe the floor with Duke, your setting yourself for disappointment. Hell, your setting yourself for a "I told you so !" attacking Duke when the short-story will come out. It's obvious that Jason won't destroy Duke, that's basic storytelling process for that kind of story, or if he does, he will comment of Duke is a lot tougher than he thought or something. In any case, you'll find other reasons to be offended.
We got it, you don't like Duke. Well, you know what ? Do what I'll do very soon for Detective Comics : don't buy it. I've gone from "meh" to hatred and disgust when it comes to Tim "Worst thing which happened to Batman ever" Drake. I don't get out of my way to clamour it every second of every day. I don't care about that character, I don't care about his pitiful story, his past in the Batman universe, nothing about him is endearing to me, whatever the era. Add to that the fact that I don't like the basic idea of Rebirth, Oz, and the likes, and I've pleanty of reasons to not buy the arc about Tim.
And that's what I'll do. I won't buy it, I'll remain content to read titles where this character doesn't appear, where I can even pretend that he doesn't exist, and be done with it. Hopefully, his return will satisfy the rabid Duke haters who are, almost always, frustrated Tim Drake fans who feel threatened by every character who could "diminish" their favourite.
I hope Duke's mini will sell, and I'll hope he'll get to appear often in the Batman mythos after it. If he doesn't, well at least I'll have some stories to read about him that I like, even if it means all this potential for something new and great will be left to rot, until another new writer reignite it (hopefully) in years to come.

Jason likely won't wipe the floor with him because it's a training exercise and likely not that serious. If it were serious, then, yes, Jason should absolutely wipe the floor with him. But if we're supposed to think Duke "beats" him, then it's still a joke. Ideally, it should be Jason saying, "Hey, you're pretty good."
People have every right to be leery of how this interaction will go, considering the way Duke's creators/writers have gone about things in the past, with Mr. "Better than Robin," etc. If they decide to make Jason look bad to prop up Duke, then it's only going to make people dislike him even more. That is not how you endear a character to people. But they continue to not learn that. As I wrote in another comment, with each step, it's like they want people to dislike him.
I think Duke interacting more with the Batfam should have been done more than it has, so it could actually be a good thing for him to have a short story with Jason, who he's barely said a word to, but it all depends on how they handle it. People would like Duke a lot more if he had more ties to the other Robins. That's what I think, anyway.
But where has this info even come from? It seems pretty random.
To answer my own question:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/how-dc-is-betting-tomorrows-comic-book-talent-1027890
NEW TALENT SHOWCASE 2017 #1
Written by ERICA HARRELL, DESIRÉE PROCTOR, DAVE ACCAMPO, AARON GILLESPIE, AL LETSON, TONY PATRICK and OWL GOINGBACK
Art by SAM LOTFI, MINKYU JUNG, LYNNE YOSHII, SIYA OUM, MATT MERHOFF, LALIT SHARMA and JAGDISH KUMAR
Cover by JIM LEE and SCOTT WILLIAMS
That latest graduates from the DC Talent Development Workshops show off their skills in stories starring some of DC’s greatest characters. In these tales, Poison Ivy fights an ancient demon, Doctor Fate is confronted by the cost of magic, Red Hood and Duke Thomas face off in a training day simulation and so much more!
I love how most of the comments so far on DC's reveal of Batman and the Signal on Twitter have just been about how Duke looks like Wolverine.

Training doesn't necessary mean fighting.
And imo would really to much if he was allready able on the level of the experienced Batfamily members. If you look back at Tims original run, it took really a long time before he was really written as a top level figther, in his early years he lost against people who are very far from being among the best figthers in the DCU (like Lynx for example).

This new costume isn't even his actual new look.
They did the same to plenty of Batman Inc characters. Knight was killed and Squire became the new Knight, Ravil was killed by Ducard,Musketeer got replaced by Nightrunner, Mr Unknown by his protege after he was horribly murdered by Lorf Death Man's crew. I think DC always saw them as disposable.
Any character is replaceable sure and death is a common enough reason for a character to be replaced still the way this particular transfer was handled was off-putting to me. I thought it was handled particularly badly.

Oh thank goodness. I desperately hope the Bat Sideburns go AWAY.

That's pretty much how I'm expecting it to go with Jason saying that Duke is good but that he still needs work. Duke was plenty impressed with what the others could do during Robins War and I think a one on one bit of training from one of them could be interesting if handled well.

The only reason I'm leery is that there are literally years worth of bad showings with Jason where he ends up as a prop for some other character. I hope that this isn't going to be another case of that but I still have reservations about it anyway. I totally agree on the rest of your statement here.

Why release official art that doesn't even have the finalized design ?

Good. I dont see how readers are suppose to take him seriously as his own character looking like that.

Honestly the silly and melodramatic hatred for Duke Thomas makes me want to support the character even more.
Honestly the silly and melodramatic hatred for Duke Thomas makes me want to support the character even more.
Yeah, the over the top nature of some people's hatred for Duke isn't really making me hate the character either though it's certanly making me annoyed with certain people both here and in real life.
I definitely think that if you look at Duke from a Batman publishing history perspective, you tend to see him in a more familiar understandable light. DC lets some creators run with a new Batfam member/Bat love interest, give the character a chance to be set up (before he/she succeeds or fails with his own book).
Snyder/Cap sold well, DC technically can't argue against Snyder that books with Duke weren't selling. Snyder/Cap's sales likely had little to do with Duke's inclusion, but that's not how publishers necessarily deal with creators ("Scott, we know no one likes Duke despite those sales, which earn you a lot of leash and deference with us, sorry, bye bye Duke").
