In the documentary, Lazenby talks about how getting to the part went to his head and he started acting out. According to the documentary, this made the studio nervous about him and with OHMSS not doing as well as the studio had hoped, they decided to try to get Connery back for the role. Lazenby does tell a really entertaining story about how he got the part of Bond in it. If you like Lazenby, that part alone is probably worth watching the documentary for. I think I've seen parts of Never Say Never Again, but I don't think I've seen the whole thing. From what I've seen, it's okay but nothing really groundbreaking.
i also read the first issue of Kill Chain today. It's a solid start to the series with an interesting ending and plenty of action throughout. I do remember that my enthusiasm for Diggle's last series decreased as it went on, so I hope this one is able to maintain my interest throughout.
-
I ended up watching it, I loved it! The documentary that is, I still haven't watched NSNA. I probably will, one day...
Has anybody seen Never Say Never Again? I can't decide if it is worth watching :P
It has a sightly antiquish early 1980's modest budget feel to it, but I still enjoy watching it. I think it's a better film than the last Roger Moore film that came out about the same time, but it feels a little less polished in some parts. I think It's better than Connery's previous 'last' film Diamonds Are Forever and although Connery's much older I think he still looked fitter; at least in as much as I can recall. However Never Say Never Again is basically a remake of Thunderball so this is the film to compare it to. One is antique 60's the other antique 80's and I don't think that although each has their strengths, that one stands head and shoulders above the other.

Read the final issue of Black Box today. I thought it was a pretty good finale for the series. The action was really good throughout. No Name reminds me of Jason Voorhees without his mask on. Also enjoyed Bonds dilemma throughout the issue in regards to what should be done with the black box once he stops Genji.
-
I'm going home for the weekend, so I MAY get to catch up, but I suspect that the last issue is in my August delivery :(
-
It's a bit of an odd film. Basically, it's created in part by a complicated issue over the authorship of Thunderball-basically, Fleming and another writer originally planned it as a film script featuring Bond. However, Fleming later turned the concept into a novel, and the novel was the first to introduce SPECTRE and Blofeld. (Whereas the films didn't adapt TB until the fourth film, so they were both introduced earlier in Dr.No and From Russia With Love, with SMERSH being the original bad guys in the books). However the co-writer, Kevin McClory-got upset at this, and demanded partial credit for Thunderball, as well as the rights to SPECTRE and Blofeld (Hence them not appearing in the main series for many years, apart from a sort-of cameo in FOR YOUR EYES ONLY which really only used the bald head and cat, both trademarks mainly of the film Blofeld; although the cat does appear in NSNA). Eventually, NSNA was the result of McCory flexing those rights.
It's a bit odd. There's no Bond theme whatsoever, the main titles are played over the action instead of being they're own thing, no gunbarrel, (there's an 007 that sort of tries for the affect though). M, Q and Moneypenny are somewhat even more caricatured, etc. However, it did anticipate some parts of the film series (Such as Bond being put out to pasture, and the gadgets are very similar to GOLDENEYE, black Felix). Connery also seems to be having a lot more fun, and is more fit despite being a dozen years older, than in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. Plus Klaus Maria Schneider as Largo is a lot more scary and crazy than Adolfo Celfi's version. Basinger's kind of iffy but Barbera Carerra is a lot of fun as Fatima Blush, who is basically Fiona Vulpe from Thunderball but turned up to 11.

I tried to watch Never Say Never Again, I didn't manage to finish it, it was just ugh. Ah well!
-
I love what Percy is doing with Green Arrow and Teen Titans. But im a little hesitate to try out his Bond because from what im hearing, it's a continuation of the books. My only knowledge of Bond is from the movies.
-
They are supposed to be in the same continuity yes, but I would pick up Black Box. Personally, I would say that other arcs have been better, but I would still get it. Not a fan of the books?

I've never come across the books. I'm sure they're much more different than the movies.
-
Ronin: It depends what book/movie you are talking about. Some of the movies, such as Casino Royale and From Russia with Love, are fairly accurate to the books while others, like Moonraker, have nothing to do with the books they are "based" on. Regardless, while the recent Bond comics are set in the same continuity as the books, I don't think you would have any trouble reading them. Each mini-series is fairly stand alone. I don't recall major references to the books in Black Box. As long as you have general knowledge about Bond and his universe, you should be good reading it.
Enigma: What didn't you like about Never Say Never? I've only seen bits and pieces of the movie over the years and don't really recall much of it beyond it being Connery's last film. Would you say it's better or worse than the other Bond movie that came out that year, Octopussy?
-
Oh they definitely are, not nearly as fantastical, but just enough haha I would definitely pick at least Casino Royale up and see how you feel :) I think the only thing you need to know, and I use 'need' loosely, is the Felix situation with his limbs, or lack of. Moonraker, I did like the book, but the film is WAY different. Both are equally enjoyable though - the book is more relevant to the time that it was written of course, hence the difference.
It just didn't feel like a Bond film, it felt like they were trying too hard to get crappy jokes in and it all just ended up feeling very cheap. I do wonder about bias though... Also, I actually enjoyed Octopussy and would say that it was better, although I do seem to be minority, most people seem to compare them fairly equally. Then again, I LOVED Diamonds are Forever, so shoot me
-
I,m not a real Bond fan.More a Daniel Craig fan but I bought the first issue of the first run and I,ve really enjoyed it.
Give it a go with the next #1 story arc.Great Fun :)
RALPH.

Yeah, that's a good point about Felix. It also happens significantly earlier in the books than it does in the film. In the book, Fleming originally intended to kill Felix off in Live and Let Die but someone convinced him to just have Felix be severely injured instead of killed.
I'm not surprised it doesn't feel like a Bond film since it was developed by a different company. That said, it's still disappointing to hear. And yeah, I'm one of those that dislikes Octopussy, so I would probably hate Never Say Never Again, though the Moore films were usually very hit or miss for me. While Diamonds are Forever is not one of my favorite Bond films, I still think its fairly enjoyable. I don't think its nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. I do think the movie is significantly better than the book, which I found to be incredibly boring.
-
I haven't read the book yet. So far I've read; Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Moonraker - I think that is it. I intend to read the rest though. How are you all feeling about James Bond: Origins coming out in Autumn? I like that we are getting his Fleming estate approved origin story, but Dynamite really have to get this right...
-
Honestly, this is the first I've heard about it....do we know who is writing it? Like you, I'm hesitant about the idea of exploring that period. I think the books have detailed that time enough that I don't think it's necessary to do a whole series on it and prequel stuff like this usually turns out being pretty bad. That said, I'm willing to give it a chance. For me, it will probably depend on the creative team they hire that determines my excitement for this.
-
No such details yet, that I'm aware of. It is supposed to be in Autumn, so they are cutting it fairly fine for reveals haha
-
Craig has confirmed that he is coming back for one more Bond film. He also addressed the wrist slashing remarks he made will interviewing for Spectre:

I finally read BB #5 and Kill Chain #1 - I'm not really excited by the first issue of KC, but I like the play off between Felix/Bond in BB. I'm really excited about the Casino Royale adaptation too :)
-
Something about the interactions between Felix and Bond rubbed me the wrong way in BB. I feel like they are usually not as aggressive with each other as they were in it, especially with everything they've been through together. I'm a bit on the fence as to whether to pick up the Casino Royale adaptation as I feel comic adaptation are generally a bit weak. I am pretty excited for the Money Penny one shot coming out this week.
-
I'm definitely excited about Moneypenny, but won't get it straight away :( Also, I kinda know what you mean about BB. The way I look at it is that I expect them to be more aggressive, because Bond is trying to get a hold of something that will weaken the US. Although they are friends, they are ultimately working for different governments and that sometimes puts them in situations like this. However, I can also see it as being a bit much... Its difficult, but that is part of why I like it :P
-
That's a good point. I think for me in BB their interactions came off less as old friends placed in a difficult situation due to their duty to their respective countries and more as rivals that happened to work a few previous assignments together.
-
I get that. The power play with the drink was the only bit that I was a bit off by, I think that fits more into the 'rivals who worked together previously' category, rather than 'friends forced against each other now' category.
-
I quite liked the Moneypenny one-shot, I really like this bad ass Moneypenny from the comics. I wasn't too thrilled by the Black Box ending though, it all felt a bit meh. It wasn't bad per se, it just wasn't earth shattering.
-
I remember liking the action in the final issue of Black Box and thinking it was a solid enough finale, but having read it a month ago, I honestly can't remember much of what happened in it. Guess that's a good indication of how memorable it was....I haven't had the chance to read the Moneypenny one-shot yet, though I'm really looking forward to it.

I didn't know they were releasing another one-shot. Looks pretty good, thanks for sharing! Do you know anything else that Moustafa has written? I don't think I've read anything by him before. Also interesting that they are making this a holiday special

Nope.
But he is a great Bond artist!

JAMES BOND: KILL CHAIN #6 (of 6)
Cover A: Greg Smallwood | Writer: Andy Diggle | Art: Luca Casalanguida
SMERSH has activated Operation Hooded Falcon, bringing Europe to its knees and NATO to the brink of collapse. A key ally is about to fall into Russia’s grasp, re-drawing the geopolitical map and setting a new foundation for the coming century. But one man can make a difference. You know his name.

STUNNING cover by Greg Smallwood!
Great time to be a Bond fan!
-
This mainly has to do with the fact I am fan of Mike Grell but I would love for Dynamite to let him do a James Bond mini-series. I still remember the one he did for Eclipse Comics (Permission to Die) back in 1989.
-
Oh crap, that is a beautiful cover... I'm planning to slab another JB issue and that has just shot up my list haha :) Also, Solstice looks good. Although, I felt like Service needed more than a one-shot, whilst Moneypenny was just right, so I'm curious to see which side this one falls on. Also, I won't get it until my December subscription, so no spoilers! :P

Kill Chain #4
http://www.cbr.com/james-bond-kill-chain-4/
-
I really need to get caught up on Kill Chain so I can read this when its released.
-
I missed your comment before Kaled - I'm actually planning to get Permission to Die at some point, is it worthwhile?
-
I thought it was. Grell's story and art are at top form and still holds up years later. It came out just a few years after the Longbow Hunters and shortly after the start of his run on Green Arrow.
-
Ah nice. I read one of the old JB mini series (the name escapes me), and it was awful haha This sounds more hopeful though!
-
I finally got to reading the Moneypenny one-shot. I really enjoyed it. I agree that it was awesome to see Moneypenny in action and enjoyed the contrast Houser did with her and the rest of the agents. I also liked the flashbacks, though I thought placing the scene with her and her friend as kids in school between the flashbacks between her getting the new assignment from M and the flashback with Bond was weird. I assume it was to tie in with Moneypenny realizing there was something off, but it broke a bit of the flow for me.
-
Hmmmmm, I think I see what you mean, although I am going from memory only :P I'm looking forward to 'Solstice', plus the Casino Royale adaptation is due out soon! I actually read Carte Blanche the other week - it was good, but not mind blowing. I really didn't like it initially, but it got better.
-
Yeah, I'm really excited for Solstice. And I think that perfectly sums of Carte Blanche. Its enjoyable but not much more than that. Its one of the first Bond novels I read, so its memorable for me in that regard. I think I had two main problems with it: I feel like the writer felt each chapter needed to end in some sort of cliffhanger, but half the time the cliffhangers amounted to nothing. Second, the Bond in that book felt much more "tame" for like of a better word. The Bond of the books and the recent comics have a certain brutality when necessary that I felt that version of Bond didn't have.
I also read Kill Chain #2 and #3 today. So far I've found this series to be fairly enjoyable, but it doesn't stand out in any major way. I did enjoy the interactions between Felix and Bond much more in issue#2 than their interactions in Black Box. As much as I enjoy Felix, I do find it slightly strange that he is popping up in all of Bonds cases in these recent mini-series. I have been wondering if there might be some benefit to having just a main series instead of a bunch on mini-series that are relatively unconnected to each other. If there was, they could also continue to release the one-shots that would give different writers a chance to tell a brief tale in addition to the main series as well.
-
I think that would be an interesting idea. What I would REALLY like to see, is a long term arc. Something that doesn't have to be squeezed into 6 issues...
