They clearly still see the faceplate as the most "iconic" part of him though. I don't mind it but I don't see it as the definitive part of his character design.

Well I still hope I was exaggerating about the "old Hal" thing and it was indeed some coloring issue, since otherwise they could be hiding him yet to try to have a "gotcha" moment.
