The way Richie's Nova helmet changed from Prime to Centurion in #1 looked like the transition was intentional, so I'm not surprised that they'll explain the reason for it later.

It's still Richard, he just has a bunch of Cancerverse essence in him. The point of Amadeus Cho's bio-scans was to make it perfectly clear that this is the Richard Rider.

I'd highly suggest the 2007 run from Abnett & Lanning. Their run on Cosmic Marvel around that time is easily one of my favorite series of comics to date.
