It's a story-thing. Teh easiest way to make people remember a minor character.... heroic sacrifice. People will remember it because of what eh character DID... even if they don't remember any other...

This reductionist way of looking at characters kinda ruins the entire appeal of X-Men. Which admittedly... is very true to how Beau has been doing '97. But that doesn't make it a GOOD thing.

Soemthign about the way this series has been written so far makes me doubt we'll get new characters except as minor cameos. It seems written so only the core cast actually matters :/
