Yes, alcoholism being one of them. He also was pushing his Christianity in a seedy way. He did have talent, but he ending up painting just what he thought would sell. As an artist, you can balance what you paint between what you want to and what you can sell. But when it is only about what will appeal to the most people, the art suffers.
