    I'm not sure what really made me think of this, maybe King's Batman story, but going over this one page again made me laugh. It's all kinds of messed up that they have women literally fight over a man, but Superman clearly having fun just kills me:

    Yes. That IS the character. Siegel said a requirement of Superman is that he has a sense of humor . There is A trickster element in Jewish spiritual culture going back to Jacob. The tzaddik( Jewish sage) sometimes has to use tricks to help people realize their full potential. He disguised himself among at the masses and put them through tests to refine their character and ethics. That's part of the point.
