As a teacher, I've used past Schoolhouse Rock episodes in my instruction. It's not so much the content anymore, but the critique and the questions. I've shown my kids "The Great American Melting Pot" numerous times:
We look at the themes and ask ourselves are they true. Is America a melting pot? Are all welcome? Can everyone just "fit right in?" I'm surprised with how my students respond. Some feel it is while others starkly disagree.
Bringing it all back, that's why Saturday morning was so important. It wasn't just entertainment, toy commercials, and sugary cereals. Instead, they were themes, big themes, that still affect us today.
