Firestorm (powerhouse and a team scientist)

Elongated Man (and Sue, team detective / investigator)
Zatanna (powerhouse and magical support)
It's one bigger than I would prefer (even with Sue generally pounding the pavement, liaising with authorities, manning the satellite, etc.), and that's after dropping Hawkman to trim it down, but includes all the basics you'd want (and if the writer is comfortable with a nine-man team, Hawkman could easily be added back, as he's a fun source of conflict with Ollie, over their very different stances on just about everything). They've got science, they've got detectives, they've got heavy hitters, they've got a magician, they've got a few scrappy sorts who are just great at kicking butt and taking names.
Atom (and Firestorm) as the lead scientists, and Elongated Man (and Sue) as the lead detectives, should shake up some expectations. Hawkwoman as the one sourcing any awesome tech, and Green Arrow as the team piggy bank, and Black Canary as the best hand-to-hand fighter (and tactical leader) also nicely spreads things out (instead of having *all five of those roles* more or less covered by Batman).
And they *don't* have a bunch of people who also always have their own solo books (like Superman, Green Lantern or the Flash), and therefore showcase some characters that I'm not as likely to see, otherwise, which I also consider a plus.
My favorite JL team would probably include folk like Vixen or Booster Gold, but I kind of love this 'Satellite-era' group as well, and some of them, like Firestorm and Red Tornado and Zatanna, would really get to shine as the 'powerhouses' on a team that doesn't have a Superman, Green Lantern or Martian Manhunter to show up their cool powers.
