Too Old For Action Figures?

That's what someone said about my collection. I wonder. What's your thoughts on collecting action figures?

I'm not using their money to buy my action figures so whatever.

I started to get more interested in the statues. At first Bowen was about the only game in town and they were fairly reasonable. I bought a number of the mini busts but then they switched to mostly full figured statues for much higher price. They're not in business any more but there are lots of companies that jumped in over the years. IIRC Sideshow Collectibles started out with action figures but now their statues can cost in the thousands for the premium format. I know one collector here on the boards has the Doom premium format that was about 4 grand.

There are some very well done figures that sort of fall in between a statue and an action figure, the Marvel Gallery figures for example. DC has a good line of stuff too, like the DC Dolls.

I think a tastefully displayed collection shouldn't be anything to have to explain. As someone said, people collect thimbles, Hummel figures, Precious Moments figures etc. If they fill your entire home then that might be a problem.

Boy, I miss that old CBR column that came out every week called Shelf Porn. There were some awesome collections featured.

Who cares lol? Life is far too short to let others decide if our lifestyle is acceptable or not. Unless you are harming someone or even yourself, there is no problem.

Buying toys, which are things that are meant to be played with by children, always kind of seems like a weird thing to get to me. And it isn't like I don't see **** I wouldn't mind having, but it also just seems like a weird waste to me. Whenever I see those Hot Toys toys, I can't help but think: Man, you know who would really enjoy these things, kids.

Then again it's your money, buy what you want. You like buying toys, buy toys.

Lots of people feel the same way about adults buying comics. Comics are for kids is the mindset, despite all the evidence otherwise, for some that will always be the way they see it. It's not about what "they" think, it's about what makes you happy.

Same here. I had some action figures, but jumped into the statues. I now have a pretty good collection, but boy are they expensive. Because of that, I think I only bought two so far this year. I can't afford the full size Bowen figures. They're way too expensive.

Funny thing is I almost put something about this in the last post, this being a comic book forum and all I was sure someone would point this out. Comics are for kids isn't some much a mindset, it's more like what comics were until only somewhat recently. Them not really being for kids anymore has more to do with the death of the comics industry, and the only people they can still get to buy comics being the people that were once buying them as kids.

There are people who buy comics slabbed in plastic never to be opened only to be displayed, so presuming they read them is just an assumption, and not necessarily a good one.

And comics were't "just for kids" until recently. Throughout the 40s and 50s more comics were made intended for older readers than are today. It wasn't until the mindset presuming they were for kids took hold with the Wertham movement that comic content was neutered and the Comics Code Authority formed that comics were made for kids. Prior to that, there were comics for all ages and interests that sold very well to diverse audiences.

Assumptions are always just that, and we know what assumptions do. They generally proceed from sweeping generalizations like who should buy what product and who will do what with what they buy, and form trying to make fine distinctions justifying the things we do from the things others do to make ourselves feel better about what we do.

I used to collect action figures until they got too expensive (and I ran out of room to display them). Now I just buy the occasional Funko Pop to go along with my collections of DC chess pieces, sci-fi model ships and trading cards.

I'm thinking of starting a collection of sci-fi weapons (pistols actually). Star Trek phasers seem to be the easiest to get but I want to see about getting a pulse pistol from Farscape, the handgun from the Black Hole and a Tesla from Warehouse 13. There used to be an airgun of Robocop's auto 9 but it's no longer in production.
