I grew up in the 90's but the 1959 one is simply classic. To me it is THE logo.
Voted for 2000, but 1959 and the original 1940 come close.
"History of the DC Universe" by Wolfman and Perez, when the DCU use to make sense.
Everyone, I assume you all know this but keep in mind the colors on all of these change regularly.
It's no surprise that the 1959 design is my favourite, but I like how most of them have been variations on the 1940 design and have even kept the same lettering style (with the square S). However, something I liked about the 1959 design was the unique letteriing for THE. I've noticed this style for other lettering on DC books and I'm thinking it might be the same letterer who used this font for various purposes.
I decided to revive these original polls to see if/how the results differed from the finals. I'm not sure if I should've done multiple rounds or not. Maybe some polling geeks could jump in and tell me what they think.
At any rate, here I can see that the 1959 version is tied with the eventual winner, 1995. And my personal fave, 2000, coming in next.
I can see why the "The" font was changed for this cover layout, because the DC bullet doesn't allow room for the previous version. However, you can see that they actually kept the original font for the "The" in "The Fastest Man Alive"--and it's in the stronger position above the "F" inside a pale yellow box, where the other "The" is almost lost in the background detail.
I never really thought about this one before, but I think I like the '87 one best, by a lot. Strange, as I don't actually know that I've read more than maybe one or two comics from that period. There's no nostalgia to it at all, I just like the design, I guess.
