I did want to make a "Man, Super Clark is fighting in the park, someone let Namor out in the rain" joke, but y'know, that's a pretty tortured song lyric right there.

I'm not sure exactly on the timing, but it would have made sense if it was pre-merger. They made a big point of talking about how this wasn't "their" Superman, which could be some ham fisted attempts at foreshadowing the merge. Certainly would have been weird if they were saying it after the merge.

This is before the merger. In the original Lois and Clark mini from convergence that brought back post crisis Clark to nu earth in the first place they specifically talk about his powers fluctuating in the new universe

Also those quakes were planet busting stuff,increasing in magnitude slowly. The last one that Supes takes before chucking in the globe thing was supposed to bust the planet till Aquaman or someone interfered (they show the waves spread across the planet... ). Superman was actually fine aside from being able to force his way into the planet busting nucleus

Well there you go then. Like I say, I'm fine largely with merged Supes having the strength of the nu Supes era. It makes as much sense as anything else honestly.
