Which first comic for my 8 year old

Should start out by saying he is not a fan of reading. After some thought this seemed like the ideal solution. I'll do some looking around for the marvel/dc digital membership so he has it on tablet (so win win for him I hope). To save a double post dc or marvel comics. I know everyone's opinion will differ slightly or drastically. Would still like thoughts pls and people's thoughts on others suggestions

My question is which would be a great first comic to introduce him and hook him. Moderate language is fine etc is fine.

I would recommend anything by Doug TenNapel. He draws great monsters and sci-fi kid friendly things. Not a lot of reading either. Only a few are adult only (like Black Cherry). He was the creator of Earthworm Jim if you want an idea of what he does. A few of his books I'd recommend for an 8 year old are:

Tommysaurus Rex
Monster Zoo
Cardboard
Earthboy Jacobus

The various Marvel Adventures andSpidey series (a Spider-Man series literally just called "Spidey") are pretty good first choices. Nothing too intense, just fun stories that stand alone really well.

From the DC side, maybe Scooby-Doo Team-Up.

Scooby and the gang meet up with both DC superheroes some issues and other Hanna-Barbera characters in other issues.

Squirrel girl or Moon girl. At least a friend tellsme his son loves Squirrel girl and he is seven years old.

Was thinking of something not to heavy but to introduce him to maybe some of the lore slowly.

Probably shouldn't be a well known hero or team (only so he doesn't know what to expect) but still a strong character/team.

We tried books based on or books that had programs/films based on them and no interest. So I think something that engages him more whether imagination or mind.

I think great art work and something for a slightly older audience

Had you tried the first Harry Potter novel?

I remember (many) years ago when kids of all ages were reading that.

Start him on something DC, because it is lighter than Marvel. Green Lantern Silver Age. Maybe a Trade.

My niece loves Ms Marvel, and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, she is 11. Ms Marvel may be a little advanced for 8, but that would depend on the kid. I would also recommend Squirrel Girl, though I haven't tried this one with my niece yet, but she has expressed interest in it (I only get her 2 subs tho, one for birthday and one for Christmas), and I read it myself and though some things like the programming talk (Squirrel Girl studies programming in college) would kinda fly over his head, it would be fine for an 8 year old overall. Now that I think about it, things are a little short on books starring younger boy characters. there was Nova, but it was cancelled...

From Marvel i would say Squirrel Girl. I have heard its loved by kids. Squirrel Girl has one disadvantage. Its art is somewhat idiosyncratic and not loved by everyone. Though its writing is among the best.

From DC Supersons is brilliant. There are not many kid heroes. 'Supersons' a book starring the sons of Batman and Superman is really fun. Supersons has an advantage that the heroes are boys themselves. Some young boys prefer to read boy heroes. Thus, i think 'Supersons' is the best choice from comics right now. Though 'Squirrel Girl' is really good too.

What worked great for me is I read the Harry Potter books starting when Prisoner of Azkaban had come out and I was either 12 or 13. Given that books were coming out approximately a year at a time around then, I got to read the book at the same age as Harry. As Harry got older and the books got more mature, so did I (of course, the book release schedule slowed down so I didn't quite time it perfectly, but it still worked really well). When/If I have kids, my hope would be to recreate the same experience, but I have a feeling me trying to force the same experience won't create the same result.

To stay on the topic of comics, I have a feeling Ms. Marvel is doing the same thing. It's a fairly light and accessible book. However, as the book goes on and its audience presumably matures, G. Willow Wilson seems more willing to explore darker themes. The DocX arc is a perfect example of that and is definitely analogous to later Harry Potter novels while the early stuff is absolutely all readers regardless of how young they are.

Not DC and not Marvel, but isn't Jeff Smith's Bone series of comic books/graphic novel collections suppose to be kid-friendly?

Also, maybe check the Scholastic website and see if they have graphic novels for his age that might give you ideas?
(I know when I used to be a substitute teacher, the school system where I worked had the Scholastic book club stuff for kids in elementary school.)

DC: Super Sons

and like the post above if they like Pokemon then yes Pokemon Adventures.
