Episode 2 is War of the Sontarans, and as speculated it's set during the Crimean War.

Funny thing is for all the Sontaran appearances we've never actually seen much of their conflict with the Rutans. Many of their episodes are just the Sontarans trying to do something on the side to give them an edge in said war, but we never really see the conflict.

Also has a "Historical celebrity": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Seacole. Funny thing is she was just in a BF audio just early last year.

We've seen them interact in every other medium apart from TV. I think the thing that prevents them doing so is the concern over the Rutan design. They are just jellyfish after all. You'd need to do something along the lines of Zygon Invasion/Inversion due to their shape changing ability.

Yeah their MO, apart from the eternal war thing, is kind of too similar to the Zygons.

Maybe you could have the Stranger pop up like the Curator?

I was actually thinking they could have his Maxil character pop up. Well, pop up again: apparently he had a cameo in an audio of Galifrey already, but that was a while ago.

I doubt it. There was the contentious rights thing between BBV and the BBC. When Bragg's did those, he fully intended it to be a veiled attempt at Doctor Who. The BBC got whiff and threatened legal action. Hence why they had to change the backstory of The Stranger to begin with.

He did in the Gallifrey series. Pretty sure he was promoted to Castellan. But those audios were around 15 years ago.

Still, I agree. No reason they can't have Maxil pop up again. Well, they could have if they hadn't have wiped out the Time Lords again.

Let The Lame Duck Season Begin!

It's strange. So much was happening, yet this episode was...boring? Yet this episode felt like it was trying very hard to look and feel like a"classic" episode of Dr Who.

I actually liked this episode, especially with the numerous threats set up for the next few episodes, and the addition of an apparent past villain from the Doctor's pre Hartnell days is a smart means of developing the Timeless Child arc, though I am concerned that Chris isn't going to be able to wrap up and reboot enough in eight episodes before RTD takes over. Yaz continues to unfortunately be the weak link - it boggles me that Moffatt managed to flesh out Bill in one season alone to be likable and engaging yet Chris has failed to do so with any of his companions (outside maybe Graham) with triple the time. Still, I'm prepared to see 13's era out and hope she'll get a good sendoff and will be treated better by Big Finish in the future.

The episode was very much set-up. However it was weirdly paced and some of the writing was awful. As it stands, it was meh. 5/10, best episode I’ve seen of this era

I also feel that this Doctor still hasn't been given a real identity and sadly never will. It's like watching someone cosplay as The Doctor. Just a lot of broad strokes

I will go with FF and Anthony. And what's more, I don't understand a word when the Doctor and Yaz are talking to each other.
There came a time when the Old Gods died! The Brave died with the Cunning! The Noble perished locked in battle with unleashed Evil! It was the last day for them! An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust!

I mean, it's a multiparter telling a single story. That's basically a classic who episode

It felt like Chibnal was going for Moffat whimsy but missed the target. The dog alien was fun.

Instead of throwing the kitchen sink at us the first episode should have just been The Doctor dog alien and Dan.
