BBC released the streaming figures on their end. Doctor Who was streamed over 10+ million times over Christmas holiday.

It also showed the 7 day final figures for all the specials.

You can sense right wing YouTubers are ramming their heads into walls to explain how this is awful.
"The story so far: As usual, Ginger and I are engaged in our quest to find out what the hell is going on and save humanity from my nemesis, some bastard who is presumably responsible." - Sir Digby Chicken Caesar.
“ Well hell just froze over. Because CM Punk is back in the WWE.” - Jcogginsa.
“You can take the boy outta the mom’s basement, but you can’t take the mom’s basement outta the boy!” - LA Knight.
"Revel in What You Are." Bray Wyatt.

So according to the novelizations of the specials, they took place within 15 hours after the Regeneration from the Doctor's POV.

    Which means:

-The Doctor faced all three of his greatest enemies-Daleks, Cybermen, Master
-Got a forced regeneration into the Master
-Reunited with five companions from former lives-Ace, Tegan, Mel, Donna and Wilf.
    -Said goodbye to Yaz
    -Regenerated into fourteen
-Helped UNIT with two separate crisis
-Accidentally created the Dalek manipulator plunger
-Defeated the Meep, reactivated Doctor Donna which then got fixed
-Battled weird doubles on a spaceship
    -Faced the Toymaker
    -Bi-generated

All in a single day. No wonder 14 needs some time to relax.

Just got to see the Christmas Special myself and I think my only complaint is that I wish the Doctor kept the kilt he was wearing when he almost got crushed by the snowman.

    Something about a possible spinoff:

I'm thinking maybe this is the UNIT spinoff and the Sea Devils might be the opening villains, rather than an entire Sea Devil show. In their three TV appearances they've never fought UNIT (Unless you count the Doctor and Jo. acting as representatives)

    That makes more sense.

The 10.1 million was for all episodes of Dr Who. Most of these views are for old episodes or perhaps people rewatching the recent specials. This is good as it still shows an interest in the show.

However only 1.79 million were for the Christmas special. If one adds these figures to the overnight of 4.73 million, then the figure of 6.52 million is actually a drop from the third special 'The Giggle' seven-day views despite getting more viewers on the day.

Regarding the fantasy angle, Moffat I think referred to the Eleventh Doctor era as sort of a "Dark fairy tale"

I might have mentioned it before but I think the show mainly tried to appeal more to more "science based" science fiction in the 80s during the very late Tom Baker (Season 18) and the Peter Davison era, but this had a lot of mixed results. Nyssa, Adric and to a degree Turlough were given a lot of technobabble to deliver which used to be more of Romana and K9's job and even the latter generally knew how to have more fun with the material.

I guess Tegan was kind of needed to balance that out a bit.

Rather belatedly the UK figures for the Christmas special have been released. I don't know why it took them so long, but they don't add up to the previous declared viewership numbers. Instead of being 6.52 they are a higher 7.26. Lower than the first special, but higher than the 2nd and 3rd.

My impression of the new Doctor and companion are a bit middling. I don't dislike them, but I don't get the instant love I had for Tennant or Smith either. Certain Doctors in the past I actively hated to begin with but later won me around to love them. However, in my own viewing past the middling ones always stayed middling ones. If so, my appreciation will lean more greatly on how good I think the stories are.

One thing I'd like them to have is a stronger villain for later episodes. The Goblins were kind of meh and the previews already pretty much showed half their screen time already.

If they're going for original villains entirely hopefully it's better than season 11's attempts, which either were not really villains or not very memorable apart from maybe Noth's character.

Kind of curious if they do bring back the Master maybe it'll be less of an EVENT!! story and perhaps something like some of his plots during the Pertwee years and 80's, which weren't exactly super epic stories (although they often did involve him trying to take over Earth at least).

Season 15 has been announced as the next Blu-ray collection.

Would've preferred season 13 out of the unreleased Tom personally but oh well.

15's interesting in that it's sort of halfway between the darker/horror approach of the Hinchcliffe years and the generally more comedic approach of the other two Graham Williams seasons.

    Announcement has a Leela mini-episode....

Maybe tracks with the theory that the slug creatures are Fendahl and they want a little franchise synergy.

Just read about Millie Gibson sad to see Ruby gone so soon but not that shocking. RTD outside of Rose had a habit of dropping companions after one series.

Varada Nethu seems like a good choice.

It's a bummer but one companion per season can allow for greater variety. Hopefully Davies is more creative in this era. We could use more variety than a young 20-something Londoner.

It's of course possible that Ruby could come back for a few episodes like Martha did in season 4/End of Time etc. and of course Donna recently.

Unless Millie left on a bad note...
