Doctor Strange: "You are the right person to replace Logan."
X-23: "I know there are people who disapprove... Guys on the Internet mainly."
(All-New Wolverine #4)
And, some of that is poor trade-craft by the artists.Sometimes it does... Sometimes it fails epically. Sometimes you have a bunch of people arguing over what happened on the page and disagreeing what the story was about.
But, some of it is fans being unable to accept that a modern creative team is ignoring a "classic" element from the Silver Age.
Exactly. The cleaner layouts do not excuse bad writing. But, the sort of writing that tends to coincide with bubbles also tends to be worse.IMHO, the boxes are less obtrusive to the story. They also obscure less of the artwork. Bubbles can make more much more crowded panels and more cluttered layouts.

Yeah, it seems that it comes down to "bad writing/art" either way you look at it. It is like anything else unique to comics, like sound effects and panel layouts. All of it can be good or bad depending on if the person creating it does it well or poorly. On the flip side, a person can like or dislike the use, or lack thereof, of any of these tools without their preference needing to be validated as the correct choice.
