It's easy to come to the idea independently. While I was looking for a thread about Miles Morales, I found this thread, and another one about whether Spider-Man should have a sidekick, so that idea's been in the air. There is also the Spider-Boy from Amalgam Comics.

Who is, more than likely, the answer to the original question about why there wasn't a Spider-Boy. They're only now starting to reuse the Amalgam superhero names. Sparrow, for example, originally the Amalgam of Robin and Jubilee, is now the name of Robin's sidekick.

Stan Lee never liked the idea of "side kicks" are smaller copy characters. See how some of current Marvel is today I totally understand why.

Years and years back there used to be a Spider-Kid.

He later changed his name to the Steel Spider.

There was no Spider-Boy because Spider-Man was already a teenager, so there was no point.

Also, the idea behind calling Peter Spider-Man was that teen heroes weren't any "lesser" than adults like Supernan and Batman. So ever since Peter, calling any teen Spider-Boy would be regressive and backwards.

(Slott's Spider-Boy isn't even a teen, so I guess the name part is fine.)
