He side steps, then taps his foot on the ground and Sasheem finds himself flying upward, unburied, as the arena itself surges under it to expel him skyward.

Which prompts him to fall back down via increased gravity, slamming into the Now once again smooth ground.

My impression from this post was that he was, although more to the point, him knowing where and when every attack is coming is at least indicative that the arena is connected to his consciousness somehow.

Both. His control extends to a bit of the forest around the arena, but only a small bit. Anything past that is natural and not nanite controlled.
