It seems to identify as female, seemingly usually because of it's bond with Jean. Retcons have since established an even greater female affinity.
If you need it to have a gender identity, female is likely the most obvious answer.

Yep. It's canon. The bald man said it himself : the Phoenix is female. It's a cosmic Force that lays eggs. It's the "mother" of creation. And she brings birth, death and rebirth

I am a Marvel fan preferably cosmic storylines, especially Thanos or Dark Phoenix related, when both the Avengers and the X-Men are involved count me in, loved the original Uncanny Avengers series.
Not a fan of any of the new characters.
