My thought is way too often team books, don't leave much room to tell character driven stories that has time to focus on their histories, powers, character, or giving them a narrative a place to start or end. I think the above team has the profile, interactions, and familiarity to combat most threats, is classic X-men, while making a complete team.




You can also choose a supporting cast if you like but your five character will make up the team and will be the focus of your hypothetical book. Think in terms of NXM:

That's the obvious choice.

I'd go with something a little different, but still solid:

Storm-classic leader, wide range of powers

Logan-classic star power, scrapper/tracker

Forge-better inventor than Beast, also brings magic to the table, and diversity

Karma-an underrated psi, and now that she's a billionaire she can bankroll the team too

Manifold-the newbie, but with connections to Gateway, and his teleportation gives the team range

A truly global team that hasn't been done before, but the Storm/Logan combo gives it prestige enough to work.

They can be assisted by Psylocke, Gambit, Monet, Rictor and Shattestar for funsies factor.

I choose my team since all the characters involved have pretty strong connections with each other and for the 3-way fight for who should be the leader. The drama relived from the original secret war between Xavier and Storm. However, with a nuance of Rogue now being fully capable to make her claim. Only for both to succeed to Charles that he should lead the team by showing them that he is passed his old hangups and now has the vitality to be an effective all around leader.
