In a far away star system, the ruling Science Council of the doomed planet Krypton arrogantly ignored the dire warnings of their world's imminent destruction from the greatest mind amongst them, Jor-El, which instigated a bloody rebellion by a faction within the Military Guild. Moments before the planet Krypton exploded, the desperate scientist and his wife Lara placed their infant son, Kal-El, into an experimental rocket and launched him into space on a perilous journey across the cosmos to a distant planet orbiting a yellow sun called Earth.

The dawn of the modern superhuman era had its roots in the years prior to the Second World War with the clandestine activities of costumed Mystery Men that began in 1938 with the exploits of the masked crime fighter known as the CRIMSON AVENGER. Foremost among these Mystery Men was the JUSTICE SOCIETY of AMERICA. However, precious little is known of them because all memory of their existence was erased when they disappeared amidst the Communist Witch Hunts of 1950.

The Last Son of Krypton arrived on Earth in Smallville, Kansas, where the baby was found by humble farmers Jonathan & Martha Kent, who raised the child as their own son. Meanwhile in Gotham City, Bruce Wayne was born as the sole heir of wealthy philanthropists Dr. Thomas & Martha Wayne. Across the seas on the hidden isle of Themyscira, a baby girl named Diana had been given life from the clay of Paradise Island by the love of her mother Hippolyta, legendary Queen of the Amazons, and the ancient magic of Olympus.

Empowered by the yellow sun, atmosphere and lesser gravity of the planet Earth, Clark Kent's alien physiology had granted him extraordinary strength, durability and senses that the young boy struggled to control. The Kents made their son promise to never use his gifts for personal gain and to always keep them a secret, except from his best friend, Pete Ross and the girl next door, Lana Lang. Always an outsider, Clark Kent befriended a lonely boy genius named Lex Luthor, who was investigating the mysterious scientific properties of the strange green meteorites found around Smallville. However, Lex conducted an ill-fated experiment upon a crystal containing an encoded message from an alien civilization; the collected works of planet Krypton's foremost scientist, Jor-El. His mind unhinged by the crystal's otherworldly knowledge, Lex vanished from Smallville without a trace. Not long after, Clark first encountered three super-powered teenagers, who'd journeyed from the 30th Century to meet him.

On a dark night in Gotham City, nine year old Bruce Wayne had watched helplessly as his parents were murdered in front of him by a petty crook in Crime Alley. Taken in by his family's trusted and loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth, the traumatized young boy had made a solemn vow on his parents' graves to avenge their murders, dedicating himself to train his body and mind towards this single-minded goal. Journeying to every corner of the globe, young Bruce Wayne studied and trained to master countless forms of martial arts and ancient mental disciplines, learning to strike from the darkness undetected and to withstand physical and psychological rigors that would destroy lesser men.

On Paradise Island, Princess Diana had completed her Amazonian trials. Having come of age, she had finally earned her metal bracelets, symbol of the Amazons' betrayal, bondage and enslavement at the hands of Mankind thousands of years ago. Queen Hippolyta saw in her precocious daughter the potential to surpass all Amazons, even herself. Just as the Oracles of Themyscira had foretold, Diana was as beautiful as Aphrodite, wise as Athena, swift as Hermes and stronger than even Hercules. When the Gods of Olympus took notice of the Princess of the Amazons, Hippolyta feared her daughter's future lay beyond the shores of Paradise Island, far from her mother and sisters.

Following the death of his foster parents, Clark Kent left his hometown of Smallville behind and moved to the big city of Metropolis to work as a reporter for the Daily Star newspaper. There, he befriended young photojournalist Jimmy Olsen and fell in love with the tenacious Lois Lane, a rival reporter from the Daily Planet. Secretly using his amazing powers to help those in need, Clark adopted a costumed alter ego and became a champion of the oppressed. Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able the leap tall buildings in a single bound, SUPERMAN had arrived. The Man of Steel soon earned the enmity of Metropolis' favorite son, his former childhood friend; billionaire inventor and entrepreneur Lex Luthor, who distrusted the crusading hero's motives and alien origins. Superman also encountered the cruel robotic collector known as Brainiac, who had captured and miniaturized the city of Kandor from his homeworld of Krypton prior to its destruction.

Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne had returned to Gotham City after nearly a decade abroad to wage his war on crime. Inspired by the sight of flying bat from the caves beneath Wayne Manor, he assumed the fearsome guise of BATMAN to strike terror into the hearts of the cowardly and superstitious criminal underworld. In the months that followed, Batman soon gained the trust of Detective Jim Gordon, who would eventually become Gotham's Police Commissioner, and first matched wits with his two greatest foes, the disfigured madman known only as The Joker and the playful jewel thief calling herself Catwoman.

With new wars engulfing the world, an American Special Ops officer named Steve Trevor crash landed on Paradise Island, the first man to ever set foot upon the adopted homeland of the Amazons. Intrigued by this strange newcomer, Princess Diana bested her sisters in a contest of skill and valor for the right to fly Trevor back to Man's World in her Invisible Jet. Gifted with the Lasso of Truth and her Amazonian abilities, she became known as WONDER WOMAN. There, Diana faced the Olympian God of War Ares and her former friend archeologist Barbara Minerva, who was transformed into the fearsome Cheetah.

In Central City, a forensic scientist named Barry Allen was struck by a mysterious bolt of lightning and became The FLASH, the Fastest Man Alive. Over in California in Coast City, fearless test pilot Hal Jordan was chosen by a dying alien to take his place as the GREEN LANTERN of Earth and all of Space Sector 2814 as the latest member of an ancient intergalactic peacekeeping force. Marooned on a deserted island, rich playboy Oliver Queen mastered archery to survive. Upon his return, he used these skills as the masked crime fighter GREEN ARROW. Deep under the seas, Arthur Curry, a young outcast born of a surface dweller and the exiled princess of Atlantis began the first steps toward embracing his dual heritage as AQUAMAN, foremost champion of the Seven Seas.

Meanwhile, a group of intrepid adventures living on borrowed time had become the CHALLENGERS of the UNKNOWN, inventor “Doc” Magnus first constructed his robotic METAL MEN, the mysteries hidden beneath the Earth were uncovered by CAVE CARSON, and the depths of the oceans were explored by the SEA DEVILS. Archaeologist ADAM STRANGE was first transported to the distant planet Rann by a Zeta Beam. The time-traveller RIP HUNTER appeared to protect Earth’s heroes from any tampering of their timeline by outside forces. In the jungles of Africa, the consciousness of adventurer Congo Bill was put into the body of the immortal Golden Ape as CONGORILLA.

Following the murder of young acrobat Dick Grayson's parents, Batman had decided to train him as his partner, ROBIN, The Boy Wonder. This Dynamic Duo soon faced a bizarre assortment of dangerous villains. Foremost amongst them; The Riddler, who always incorporated elaborate puzzles and mind games into his cunning schemes; Dapper master criminal The Penguin; Disfigured ex-District Attorney Two-Face; A deranged psychiatrist obsessed with fear known as The Scarecrow; the diabolical Dr. Hugo Strange; cool criminal mastermind Mr. Freeze; And the deadly seductress Poison Ivy, whose obsession with plants left no compassion in her heart for humanity.

In Metropolis, Lex Luthor created the first synthetic clone of Superman from a stolen sample of his DNA. However, Luthor's experiments only resulted in the disfigured and unstable Bizarro, a dangerous abomination that rampaged across Smallville and Metropolis. Superman had also faced Metallo, the man with the Kryptonite heart, Mr. Mxyzptlk, a mischievous imp from the 5th Dimension, and the power-draining Parasite. The rampaging giant chimpanzee Titano was transformed by cosmic radiation which empowered him with kryptonite eye-beams, and a deranged inventor known as Toyman created deadly machines to enact his revenge. Superman’s investigations into his alien past precipitated his earliest battles with the infamous Kryptonian mass murderer Jax-Ur when Superman unwittingly freed the worst criminals of his homeworld from the Phantom Zone, including deadly Faora, mindless Non, cruel Ursa and their leader, the once renowned commander of Krypton’s military, General Zod.

Stranded on Earth by a dying scientist years earlier, a green-skinned shape-shifter had posed as detective John Jones, using his alien abilities in secret. Inspired by this new age of super-heroes, J'Onn J'Onzz, MANHUNTER FROM MARS finally went public. When alien forces threatened the planet, Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman banded together the World's Greatest Super-Heroes to form the JUSTICE LEAGUE. They soon expanded their ranks to include Ivy University Professor Ray Palmer, who could shrink down to microscopic size as The ATOM, and, in Midway City, HAWKMAN & HAWKGIRL flew the skies with Nth Metal wings and ancient weapons. When she gained a sonic scream, tough as nails blonde bombshell Dinah Lance adopted the guise of BLACK CANARY and became the latest member of the League.

Just as Batman had gained Robin, Barry Allen was joined by his own protégé, KID FLASH, after a freak accident granted young Wally West super-speed. Likewise, Oliver Queen had taken in an orphan named Roy Harper as his sidekick SPEEDY, Aquaman adopted an Atlantean outcast called Garth as his squire, AQUALAD, and a girl named Donna Troy, who believed she had been rescued by Wonder Woman and brought back to Paradise Island, followed in her big sister's footsteps as WONDER GIRL. These sidekicks of the Justice League formed their own team, the TEEN TITANS, proving themselves heroes in their own right. In Gotham City, the Police Commissioner's daughter, Barbara Gordon, joined Batman & Robin in their crusade against criminals as BATGIRL.

On the planet Oa, located at the center of the known universe, Hal Jordan was tasked by the immortal Guardians of the Universe with defeating his former mentor Sinestro, a renegade Green Lantern exiled to the Anti-Matter Universe of Qward for abusing his power. Aquaman claimed his birthright as King of Atlantis with Mera as his queen, and the young sorceress ZATANNA began searching for her long lost father with the help of the Justice League. Created to be a weapon against the League, the android RED TORNADO instead turned on his evil creator and joined the heroes. The primal forces of War & Peace chose brothers Hank & Don Hall as their avatars on Earth, HAWK & DOVE.

Wheelchair-bound genius Dr. Niles Caulder gathered three superhuman outcasts into the DOOM PATROL. Soldier of Fortune Rex Mason was transformed into METAMORPHO, the Element Man. TV reporter Jack Ryder was transformed into the deranged CREEPER. Murdered acrobat Boston Brand returned from beyond the grave to find for his killer as DEADMAN.

The miraculous return of nuclear scientist Allen Adam as the immensely powerful CAPTAIN ATOM had inspired a turbulent period of superhero activity in Hub City; Assuming the mantle of his slain mentor, Ted Kord became the new BLUE BEETLE; journalist Vic Sage pursued the truth at The QUESTION; Philanthropist Christopher Smith loved peace so much he was willing to kill for it as PEACEMAKER; Young Eve Eden adopted the code-name NIGHTSHADE and became Captain Atom's partner.

In Gotham City, Batman was approached by the mysterious Ra's al Ghul. Master of the infamous League of Assassins, he offered Batman marriage to his daughter Talia as heir to his empire and was refused, thereafter becoming one of the Caped Crusader's most resourceful and cunning foes. Hal Jordan joined Oliver Queen on a soul-searching journey across America to tackle the social issues that super-heroes largely ignored. Along with Dinah Lance and a lone Guardian of the Universe nicknamed "The Old Timer", this band of Hard-Travelling Heroes faced racism, labor unrest, overpopulation, pollution and violent religious cults. The drug epidemic was made personal when Ollie's own sidekick, Speedy, was exposed as a junkie. During this period, outspoken architect and former Marine sniper John Stewart was chosen as Jordan's auxiliary GREEN LANTERN.

Superman and his pal Jimmy Olsen became embroiled in the ancient war between the NEW GODS of the Fourth World. Darkseid, the despotic ruler of the hellish planet Apokolips, had broken his truce with his rival Highfather by kidnapping one of the FOREVER PEOPLE from the peaceful world of New Genesis to seek out the Anti-Life Equation on Earth. Meanwhile, Scott Free, Highfather's son, fled Apokolips to Earth with Barda, the leader of Darkseid’s Female Furies, and assumed the mantle of MISTER MIRACLE, the World's Greatest Escape Artist. Heeding the call of war, the warrior Orion and his cheerful companion Lightray joined the fray and learned the terrible secret of Orion's birthright. Allied with neither New Genesis nor Apokolips was the cosmic observer Metron, wandering time & space for greater knowledge in his Mobius Chair.

High school teacher Jefferson Pierce adopted the guise of BLACK LIGHTNING to defend the Suicide Slums of Metropolis against a powerful crime syndicate. High school student Ronnie Raymond and physicist Martin Stein were caught in an explosion and transformed into FIRESTORM, the Nuclear Man. Intrepid Air Force pilot Travis Morgan entered the Lost World of Skartaris and fought for freedom as The WARLORD. Meanwhile, fugitive SHADE The CHANGING MAN first escaped to Earth from the Meta Zone.

Cursed during the fall of Camelot more than a millennia ago, Jason Blood was transformed once more into The DEMON to battle the forces of Morgana LeFay. The mysterious heroine known only as the BLACK ORCHID first appeared. In the Louisiana Bayou, murdered biologist Alec Holland was reborn as the monstrous SWAMP THING. Meanwhile, evil-doers were tormented by The SPECTRE, the human host of the ancient Wrath of God, MADAME XANADU revealed the unexpected destinies of all those who entered her inconspicuous parlor in Greenwich Village, and Baron Winters gathered together his NIGHT FORCE to battle the supernatural.

The Justice League constructed a new Satellite Headquarters in orbit around Earth. They also built the Hall of Justice in Metropolis for anyone who needed their help and established the SUPER FRIENDS youth program there. Banded together from across the galaxy by Lex Luthor & Brainiac, the most sinister villains of all time were manipulated with shared vivid dreams of an impending apocalypse to challenge the Justice League and form the Legion of Doom.

Chief amongst the Teen Titans' adversaries was cunning mercenary Slade Wilson, DEATHSTROKE, who swore vengeance upon them for the death of his son and used a 13 year old super-heroine called Terra to infiltrate the Titans. Not long afterwards, Dick Grayson decided to put his days as Robin behind him and adopted the alter ego of NIGHTWING. Back in Gotham, Batman began training Jason Todd, a talented, yet troubled, juvenile delinquent, as his new partner.

Forming his own team, BATMAN & The OUTSIDERS operated secretly out of the small European nation of Markovia, whose prince was amongst their members as GeoForce, along with the Japanese swordswoman Katana and the colorful heroine Halo. Meanwhile, Ray Palmer left Ivy Town and began a new life in the Amazon Jungle after Jean Loring divorced him. Hollywood stuntman and special effects wizard Daniel Cassidy was transformed by a demon from Hell into BLUE DEVIL. With most of his team-mates gone, Aquaman disbanded the Justice League and formed a new incarnation in Detroit with the Martian Manhunter, Zatanna and Elongated Man to train young heroes Gypsy, Steel, Vibe and Vixen. The fourth wall-breaking nuisance known as AMBUSH BUG first appeared to annoy the living $#!* out of everyone from Superman to Darkseid.

Swamp Thing discovered the truth of his origins when he met a cynical and manipulative rogue named CONSTANTINE, who began preparing him for an imminent crisis that would shatter the very fabric of reality itself. Temporal instabilities spanning the Multiverse triggered a cataclysmic cosmic event known as the CRISIS on INFINITE EARTHS. From his hidden satellite above Earth, a mysterious being known only as The Monitor tasked his assistant Harbinger to gather heroes and villains from various timelines to stop the destruction caused by his counterpart from the Anti-Matter Universe, The Anti-Monitor. Amidst the red skies and desperate battles, a faction of Guardians on Oa empowered a brash Earthman named Guy Gardner to act as their GREEN LANTERN and The Flash seemingly sacrificed his life to save the universe. In the aftermath, refugees from a parallel world known as Earth-2 became stranded on this Earth. Superman's cousin Kara Zor-L, and Batman & Catwoman's daughter Helena Wayne, concealed their true identities and began defending this world as POWER GIRL and The HUNTRESS.

Taking advantage of Anti-Hero Riots orchestrated against the heroic LEGENDS of Earth, the formidable Amanda Waller orchestrated the creation of a SUICIDE SQUAD comprised of super-villains to perform secret missions on behalf of the government. Former marine Jack Wheeler took the fight to homegrown terrorists as WILD DOG in the Quad-Cities. Meanwhile, billionaire Maxwell Lord manipulated the United Nations into sanctioning JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL, whose roster included Rocket Red 7 of Russia and Fire & Ice from Brazil and Iceland, in addition to American superheroes like time-traveler BOOSTER GOLD.

An uneasy alliance between Darkseid and Metron to unlock the secrets of the Anti-Life Equation unleashed an ancient evil upon the cosmos. Rallying a band of Earth's heroes on a COSMIC ODYSSEY to thwart this dark entity, they failed to prevent the destruction of the planet Xanshi. An Alien Alliance launched an INVASION of Earth to plunder its booming population of metahumans, born with the potential to develop extraordinary powers and abilities. Afterwards, cunning Vril Dox II of the planet Colu established the L.E.G.I.O.N. to provide protection to any world willing to pay and became the primary employer of the intergalactic bounty hunter LOBO

Hollywood stuntman Buddy Baker resumed his strange exploits as ANIMAL MAN and eventually uncovered the greatest secret of existence when he met his own creator. Dr. Niles Caulder reformed the DOOM PATROL for even stranger adventures than before, including the return of FLEX MENTALLO, Man of Muscle Mystery! SHADE The CHANGING MAN returned to Earth to fight the Madness. The origins of the mysterious superheroine known only as BLACK ORCHID were finally revealed. Destined to become history's most powerful wizard, a young orphaned boy named Timothy Hunter began his education in the BOOKS of MAGIC by the world's foremost experts of the supernatural. Freed from imprisonment after nearly a century, Morpheus, the Lord of Dreams also known as SANDMAN, found his realm in chaos and his possessions stolen. Dream was also reunited with his six estranged siblings, The Endless. Each of his brothers and sisters were the immortal personifications of a universal idea believed in by all sentient life in existence; DEATH, who often appeared as a cheerful young woman in black; Destruction, who'd abandoned his duties altogether; Despair and her twin sister Desire; The youngest, Delirium; And the eldest of them all, Destiny, who had been present at the very creation of all existence to record it in his ancient book containing everything that ever was and ever will be.

Released from prison, Mark Shaw, MANHUNTER, became a bounty hunter of fugitive super-villains. Meanwhile, Arizona college student Will Payton, struck by a bolt of cosmic energy from a distant galaxy, became the newest STARMAN. The ancient spirit of vengeance, ECLIPSO finally revealed his true power. The intergalactic police force of The Controllers known as the DARKSTARS first came to Earth. Ray Terrill was told he was hyper-sensitive to sunlight, but discovered he had inherited his father's ability to absorb light as The RAY.

After The Joker crippled Batgirl and murdered Robin, the grief-stricken Batman had grown increasingly unstable without a Boy Wonder at his side to keep him grounded until a brilliant boy named Timothy Drake convinced the Dark Knight to train him as the next ROBIN. Not long afterwards, The Joker somehow cheated death once again and returned to plague this newest Dynamic Duo, alongside his adoring sidekick, Harley Quinn. Batman would also face a formidable new adversary known only as Bane, a cunning criminal mastermind whose hulking body was fueled by the steroid Venom. Freeing the inmates of Arkham Asylum to wear his opponent down, Bane broke the exhausted Batman's back and watched Gotham burn. While Bruce Wayne began the slow, painful process of healing his body, the mentally unstable AZRAEL took the cowl of Batman for his own.

Meanwhile, Superman was killed fighting the monstrous Kryptonian beast known as Doomsday in the streets of Metropolis and died in Lois Lane’s arms. In the wake of his death, new heroes emerged to carry on his Never-Ending Battle for Truth, Justice & The American Way, leaving the people of Metropolis and the world wondering who was the true Superman. The sledgehammer-wielding Man of STEEL in high-tech armor inspired by the exploits of John Henry lived up to Superman's legacy. However, the Cyborg Superman had secretly conspired with alien tyrant Mongul to transform the Earth and destroyed Coast City, hometown of Hal Jordan. Resurrected by the Kryptonian technology within his Fortress of Solitude, Superman awoke and began his long journey back home to Metropolis.

Although Superman had returned to thwart the schemes of the Cyborg Superman and Mongul, the tragedy warped Hal Jordan into the insane Parallax, who stole the power of Oa itself to resurrect Coast City. The Guardians of the Universe sacrificed themselves to empower their brother Ganthet to forge a single ring and lantern, which he entrusted to a young artist named Kyle Rayner as the last GREEN LANTERN. His ring destroyed during his final battle with Parallax, Guy Gardner sought out new powers and transformed himself into a half-Vuldarian shape shifter calling himself WARRIOR. Obsessed with righting the wrongs of the past, Parallax absorbed the residual temporal energies left behind from the Crisis on Infinite Earths and nearly succeeded in remaking the multiverse during ZERO HOUR.

In Opal City, antique store owner Jack Knight reluctantly took over the family’s business as STARMAN. When the world was once more threatened by forces too great for a single hero to defeat, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman & Martian Manhunter reformed the JLA and soon rallied all of Earth's Greatest Heroes to defeat an ancient super-weapon from the time of the Old Gods. The spirit of Jim Corrigan finally found peace and was allowed to ascend to Heaven, leaving The SPECTRE without a host to guide the Wrath of God and punish the wicked. When a Sun-Eater threatened to extinguish Earth's sun, Hal Jordan had sacrificed himself to prevent the FINAL NIGHT from falling upon his homeworld. Another band of superhumans came into conflict with members of the Justice League, including the covert action team WILDC.A.T.S., whose members waged a secret intergalactic war on their Earth. While the super-powered teenagers of GEN13 became fugitives, the global superhuman agency STORMWATCH was betrayed by one of their own. Afterwards, the surviving members became much more proactive in their efforts to save the world as The AUTHORITY, while the operatives of PLANETARY began uncovering the hidden secrets of their Earth’s superhumans.

The archdemon Neron arose from the fiery pits of Hell to empower Earth’s supervillains in exchange for their souls. Following an attack by alien parasites, Gotham City HITMAN gained X-Ray vision. Believing himself to be fulfilling an ancient prophecy, AZTEK debuted above the streets of Vanity, while Agent CHASE began working for the U.S. government’s Department of Extranormal Operations.

Shortly after Superman married Lois Lane, he temporarily gained new electrical powers and found himself split into two separate beings, one blue, the other red. In time, Lois became pregnant and gave birth to their son, Jonathan Samuel Kent, who went into hiding with his parents when Lois’s investigation into Intergang threatened their lives.
