Basically, in Maggin's take Superman regarded Clark as almost another person entirely, to the point that when his identity was exposed and he became Superman fulltime, he mourned Clark Kent as if Clark had died.

J'onn J'onnz and John Jones would have a similar level of distinction between them. Almost as if they are two people in the same body. They would be fully aware of each other's existence, but would be otherwise fairly autonomous
