Actually, I may have to change my vote. A few years before I got serious about comics (as described in my earlier posts), I stumbled across a book that had collected various superhero origins in it. One of the origins given was for Alan Scott. So technically, he was the first Green Lantern of any sort that I ever read about in common books. Sort of.

Don't remember the issue but I want to say I first read Hal in a Satellite era back issue when I was really little.

    Possibly this book?

though later editions apparently had this for the cover:

Hal Jordan all the way. This was probably the first one that I actually owned,

But there were also a few of the Green Lantern/Green Arrow silver age books, I got about the same time... not to mention the Super Friends and Super Powers toy/cartoon/comics that came out in the 80's.

But Hal's beat down of Guy was the first GL book I bought when I was old enough to actually consider myself 'collecting' comics.

Hal Jordan, even though I got into comics RIGHT before his fall and Kyle taking over.

My first Lantern series was Green Lanterns with Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz. I used to just surf wikis because I couldn't find comics in my area so didn't start reading actual comic books until a few years ago. When I started reading I was mainly a Batman/Batfamily guy with some Justice League in there. I generally avoided Green Lantern because I wanted to read John but he wasn't headlining; Baz and Cruz piqued my interest tho.

THE SIGNAL (Duke Thomas) is DC's secret shonen protagonist so I made him a fandom wiki

also, check out "The Signal Tape" a Duke Thomas fan project.

    currently following:
    • DC: Red Hood: The Hill
    • Marvel: TBD
    • Manga (Shonen/Seinen): One Piece, My Hero, Dandadan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Kaiju No. 8, Reincarnation of The Veteran Soldier, Oblivion Rouge, ORDEAL, The Breaker: Eternal Force

The first comic I ever read was McDuffie's Justice League of America, which had John Stewart as the Green Lantern, who was the first Green Lantern I read in comic books.

Also, it's rather strange that the very first Green Lantern comic book that Geoff Johns read and bought was John Stewart, but yet he was treated worse than all other Green Lanterns during his Green Lantern run.

This was the one that got me hooked on DC Comics...
That was the first GL comic I ever bought, FWIW.

As for the OP's question, it was Hal, though Alan wasn't that far off. Of course, the first time I ever saw a Green Lantern (Hal) was 50 years ago on TV.

And about five hours later still:
Hal Jordan (Silver Age GL introduced in 1959) = 55 votes (+ 1)
    Kyle Rayner (introduced in 1994) = 29 votes (+ 1)
John Stewart (backup Green Lantern introduced in 1971) = 7 votes (+ 2)
Guy Gardner (1st "backup" GL, introduced 1968) = 3 votes
Jessica Cruz (introduced in 2013) = 1 vote (still no change)

And we now also have one vote for:
Golden Age Alan Scott (Green Lantern introduced in 1940; later went by "Sentinal")
as well as the one vote for "other"

Alan Scott in the old JSA Digests. God, I miss those books.
