So they're here to stay. Haven't picked up Superman since #8 of Rebirth and the undies isn't changing my mind in jumping back in.
A couple seemed to be clinging on to the possibility that King was lying for...some reason, but promo art for Man of Steel and DC Nation #0 today makes it clearer than ever they're here to stay.
Buh-bye
It was obvious it was a "permanent" design because of the cuffs. If it was just variant covers celebrating the look it would have been straight-up classic.
But I've held onto thinner hopes of things I've been particularly passionate about so I don't necessarily blame anyone who really didn't want them back and were hoping. But it was pretty clear from the get-go.

"They can be a great people Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you. My only son." - Jor-El
The red trunks appeared in Injustice, but not with Superman:

Seems like they brought back the trunks on direct request from Bendis. Wouldn't be surprised to see that one day in the main books they're retired yet again. I think they stick with them in the main books for some years now that they're brought back, but could easily see someone else eventually coming in with a differing opinion and changing things up again someday. I could easily see it become a shifting thing eventually, considering that there's now proof positive that the character can put on a different iteration of the costume and be just fine.

Educational town, Rolemodel city and Moralofthestory land are the places where good comics go to die.
DC writers and editors looked up and shouted "Save us!"
And Alan Moore looked down and whispered "No."
I'm kinda surprised Snyder didn't want Superman to watch Lois and Bruce conceive their love child. All the while singing the "Na na na na na na Batman!" theme song - Robotman, 03/06/2021
There was a tweet by him where he said he requested them back. Perhaps it was tongue-in-cheek and he knew they'd have come back regardless, I dunno, but I saw a screenshot of the tweet, and even a response by Jurgens that "it was the one thing I wanted but couldn't get" paraphrased. I'll try to find it. Which indeed falls in line with earlier Rebirth rumors that just about the only thing Jurgens couldn't change that he wanted to at the time was restoring the old costume.
I could see it either way. Maybe they did intend to hold off for #1000 all along and that was the real reason they wouldn't let Jurgens bring the suit back right away. But I could also see, considering how the possibility of Bendis in the first place was something that came out of the blue, that it was something he specifically wanted and they acquiesced to snag him.

They were talking about using them in there 1000 stories. Seems Jurgens couldn't get the go-ahead because his story ties up the Reborn suit era stuff. Bendis is doing what's to come so it makes sense that he gets to use it. I remember other tweets were other writers on 1000 were talking about how the trunks were a must-have for their stories.
"Mark my words! This drill will open a hole in the universe. And that hole will become a path for those that follow after us. The dreams of those who have fallen. The hopes of those who will follow. Those two sets of dreams weave together into a double helix, drilling a path towards tomorrow. THAT's Tengen Toppa! THAT'S Gurren Lagann! MY DRILL IS THE DRILL THAT CREATES THE HEAVENS!" - The Digger
